Was this fun?
Extremely.
Do I want to read the sequel ASAP?
Oh yes.
Was it perfect?
Not by a long shot.

I just finished reading this book and I’m thinking I read over 500 pages and what progress has been made since the total kickass From Blood and Ash? Not much. However, I read it fairly quickly and wasn’t bored at all. Nonetheless, it doesn't deserve 4 stars because it had its share of flaws. While they did not affect my enjoyment –most of the time- they certainly made me lower my rating.

Sadly, I can't discuss this book without any spoilers for the first one.

I’ll simply make a list of the pros and cons. I'm feeling too lazy to write comprehensible paragraphs.

Cons: this won’t be a short list but I want to say that I liked this book in spite of these and I grew fond of the characters a lot.

Poppy’s violence. Oh, Poppy is so violent. It was so forced. She spent the whole book wanting to stab Cas or Kieran. And Cas saying he’s turned on by that. And it went on and on. Most characters –who don’t hate her- talk about her violence. Ok. We got it. Enough already.
Poppy’s questions.she's special because of this.
Poppy and Cas fighting their attraction. Not discussing their relationship. Cas taking too much time to explain his reasons for wanting to marry her –which of course was going to drive her crazy. ¼ of the book was spent on those two bickering or kissing. This isn't slow burn anymore this nonsense. Also, some adjectives were used too many times like “indecent” “intriguing” especially when JLA was trying for dirty talk between our MCs.
Another ¼ was spent on Poppy’s inner monologues. Which led to nowhere. Absolutely nowhere. Not ashamed to say I skimmed through those parts.
Barely any major event happened (view spoiler) we only had one minor event which promoted for the second big major event and then the last few pages. Yes, I enjoyed it anyway but when I finished the book and looked back, I realized the summary would be rather short for this amount of pages.
Poppy being all so special with special abilities, I’m sure this will be explained later but I felt that this book became too fantastical? Sure it is fantasy but the first book did not set up the world-building for this level of fantasy. Almost like whatever cool idea occurred to JLA she squeezed somewhere without giving much explanation.
✏ I thought I was missing something but I read some other reviews that shared my opinion. We still had info-dumping. In a second book. I was confused a few times but lacked the energy to find what I’m missing so I carried on.
✏ This book going to erotica books kind of places, sure I do appreciate some scenes but the Joining? Euh...
HEARTMATES AKA ANOTHER WORD FOR SOULMATES AKA MATES EXISTS IN THIS WORLD. WHY WHY WHY.

What I liked: which I’ll keep brief because of the 4.7 rating avg, most reviews are raving about this book.

✏ I genuinely love Poppy and Casteel, even though they do not communicate enough in my opinion, not nearly enough, I like them as individuals.
✏ I also enjoyed the secondary set of characters, especially the wolven. Kieran, Netta, Jasper, etc. But I only wish we had less dialogue about Poppy's personality. Or simply fewer pages so the events that took place can be seen as more significant.
✏ I’m very curious about how this story is going to continue, I can only guess part of it but because I wasn’t paying attention to all the info shower, I missed some stuff, so yeah no idea what is going to happen now but I am waiting for some heck of an explanation. A logical explanation might I add.
✏ Did I mention the fun? I think I did but I need to emphasize how much I enjoyed reading this book (with its outdated title). It took me 7 days to finish because it was a very busy week but I was reading in most of my limited free time. Which is mostly before sleep. Which means I had to struggle to stop reading. I ended up sleeping after 2 am on workdays.

Shortly, the strength of this book lays in its addicting quality and its characters even if their interactions weren’t the best all the time. If you enjoyed the first book, you’ll also enjoy this one too, although you most likely won't find it as good.

Tanzila Tabassum Zisha (Annabel Lee) Nowadays, I immediately lose interest when I see these titles. The same words in the same format. Maybe the publishers are still trying to ride on the popularity of books with titles like this but I think most readers would love a bit more originality by now.

Very true! There was this book I wanted to read that came out recently but I decided against it because of this format! I probably would’ve dismissed this one too if it wasn’t a sequel. The idea was cool for a time but now it’s just a cliche.

Rabbit Queen All those cons... I agree. I’m looking around and wondering how there are 5 stars. Am I bitter? Picky? Idk.

Farhana JC Omg completely agree with all your points!! Cannot understand why everyone is giving it 5 stars. From the end of book 1 - the end of Book 2 almost NOTHING happens at all. The book drags on and soo many unnecessary/repetitive phrases in it that gets boring to read. I genuinely love Hawke and Poppy, but felt the constant writing of their lust/attraction was so excessive. Found the carriage sex scene super distasteful and she’s definitely trying to stuff EVERY POSSIBLE MAGICAL/Greek mythological creature into her book. Comes off as if she is trying too hard. I loved the first book sooo much so was really disappointed with this sequel. Hopefully book 3 is better

Nicole Masha wrote: "All those cons... I agree. I’m looking around and wondering how there are 5 stars. Am I bitter? Picky? Idk."

I honestly don’t understand the 5 stars either. I think mostly people enjoyed this book too much to care about the negatives.

The carriage scene! So not hot 😖 seriously this book is full of flaws but it was soo much fun. I hope we don’t see dragons that will awaken because of Poppy in the next book though..

Isabel I agree with almost everything you said! I didn't like Poppy that much because to me she was a copy of Katy (from the Lux series) same with Casteel. And same with Casteel, even if he wasn't an exact copy of Daemon, their interactions and problems with the relationship was os very similar. The world building was very poor, and there was a lot of info dumping which I mostly skipped. And that ending made me role my eyes so far I saw the back of my head

HAHA and the award for the most dramatic ending of a book goes to 🙄🙄.

I honestly read the Lux series so long that I can't remember the similarities but I surely loved Daemon and Kat more. Kat was a lot more charismatic than Poppy.
And lol ikr!! I can't wait to know what else Poppy can do (not really), next thing she'll be dining with gods and the new out of nowhere mythological creatures.

Isabel Lux series was better written than this one...
I'm curious to what will happen, but I know I'm going to laugh at a lot of things 😅

Danielle Marks I completely agree with literally everything you said here. I was so disappointed to find that Poppy turned out to be yet another secretly-super-special over-powered heroine instead of a sort-of different but otherwise normal girl. The whole "not like other girls" trope really grates on my nerves something fierce.

Yeah. I def enjoyed Lux more!

Plus it’s way overused! I can understand any of her abilities, but to have it end that way?! It’s too much.

Paulina Fitzgerald totally agree with all your points! felt exactly the same

Anthony The Joining is so weird to add post Book 2...Kieran has been so platonic thus far and a great friend to them both. Poppy having a close guy friend without added intimacy would be nice.

It was very unnecessary!

I do think JLA was trying to give some threesome vibes in this book but I don’t think she’ll do it so why bother? It’ll only make the book worse. I like Kieran but I didn’t appreciate how he was forced into their sexual relationship.

I've also read the Covenent series...It starts pretty well but with so many books it gets a little boring but overall and enjoyable read.

Oh sorry! NA isn't for me, I enjoyed this genre for a short time but later, I tried many books but couldn't enjoy it anymore :(
I wanted to read covenant but it was one of those series that I postpone and I postpone until I lost interest in it.

Nana I could not agree more with your pros and cons list. I'll just refer to your review for mine haha. But honestly, I had such high hopes and expectations for this book after not having been able to put down the first/devouring it in 2 days. This book was a struggle for me to read at times because of its repetitiveness, drawling expositions, and weird timing for sex scenes (yes the carriage one). I'll give the author credit for building up interesting side characters because I genuinely love Kieran, Beckett, Netta and a lot of the wolven characters. Just a whole lot of nothing happened in the majority of the book. Lots of fillers... it almost felt like I was reading a HS diary at times.

awh thanks!
YES! All poppy's monologues and overthinking and analyzing (without getting anywhere) felt almost like a diary. it had some strong pros such as the characters but it wasn't as good as the first one. If I wanted to take the book more seriously I would've given it a lower rating because the repetitiveness was unacceptable for an established author like JLA, for example. But I didn't read it expecting it to be the novel of the year.

Absolutely was not as good as the first one, unfortunately. My expectations were just too high and I was let down. I couldn't count the number of groans and eye rolls made due to the repetitiveness. No excuse for an author like JLA lol.

Nicole Nana wrote: "Nicole wrote: "Nana wrote: "I could not agree more with your pros and cons list. I'll just refer to your review for mine haha. But honestly, I had such high hopes and expectations for this book aft..."

Yep that is true :( many things could’ve been easily fixed avoiding. I think the editors should’ve at least noticed how repetitive some things got..

Shane I wanna say that I agree with ya’ll and I think the reason why the book is this repetitive is because JLA had an agreement with her publisher that her book (the first one anyway) will have little to no influence aside from her—I think she mentioned this in the first book and I guess the result is apparent here in book 2. I just hope book 3 would be more compact and even-paced but I kinda dread that book 3 will end with them still in Atlanta and no way near in saving everyone.

I also recently learned that her usual publishers didn’t want to publish this from blood and ash? I honestly don’t remember reading such thing although I read the acknowledgements. I only remember her saying she originally planned to self-publish.

Honestly things can be wrapped up in 600 pages but seeing how little things happened here I doubt it.

krista ☽✧ great revieuw Nicole ! i totally agree with the things you are saying. I totally enjoyed this book and it was so addictive it did had some problems tho totally agree about that. I felt like the smut and romance was too much sometimes in this one

krista ☽✧ wich one did you like better the first or this one?

Thank you dear <3
Yep totally :(
Actually the first because more happened in a way and it was still new and had less problems, plus things kept moving unlike this one. Also, it wasn't as repetitive.

krista ☽✧ Same I also liked the first more because of those reasons

Kaitlin COMPLETELY AGREE! I felt like I spent so much time in Poppy's inner monologues and every info dump conversation was then repeated to other characters. "Inside jokes" (like Poppy stabbing Cas, her questioning everything, Cas being turned on by her violence, etc.) were so overdone. It made their banter tedious at times, which is something I really enjoyed in the first book. I felt like 1/3 of this book could have been cut. Honestly, it felt like a draft and not a finished product. I mean, I still read the whole thing and finished it in a few days, so I'm not saying it was unreadable. I enjoyed the world and the characters, but I'm just sad that so much potential was wasted on repeated scenes and conversations. Lastly, can we talk about how some of the dialogue was just ridiculous? The constant use of "whatever" and "random" and "weirded out" just took me out of this epic fantasy world every time I read them. They all sounded like teenagers sometimes. Prime example: The 800-year old wolven leader asking "Are you for real?" The concept, world and characters are there, but a good editor was not.

It totally felt like a draft, lots of things could’ve been cut out :/ it’s is readable but also could’ve been edited. A lot.
Omg good point!!! It was very casual and not adult ish sometimes!

❤️Court - Villains Do It Better❤️ I'm scared to start this because I can't stand threesomes in books like this. Do you think JLA will go through with it?
