Hysterical!

After the birth of her son, a woman is diagnosed by her husband as suffering from a nervous disorder and hysteria.

Although, her husband is a physician, not a psychiatrist, he decides that time in the country is going to be good for her, so they rent a big old house in the country.

The narrator doesn’t like the wallpaper in her room and tries to tell her husband, repeatedly. And like the “expert” he is, he ignores her.

She tries to explain the patterns and the horrific color and the images of the woman, but he only laughs at her and calls her “little girl.”

And then she becomes friends with the wallpaper...and the patterns. And the woman in the wallpaper escapes…

Five wonderful stars. ✨✨✨✨✨

message 5: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen "And the woman in the wall paper escapes..."; a little magical realism?

Joseph (Kevin) Lewis You can almost touch the oppression that comes from this story. So subtle and horrifying.

Zain You’re right, Joseph. Lots of oppression and horror. 😬😱

Jonathan K (Max Outlier) Nice..I'm finding two versions of this at the library of which one is 'dual text' and the other is this story with several others..which one did you read?

Zain I read the short story and single version of the book. I truly hope that you enjoy it. Good, day! 😎

Jonathan Introvert Mode My first exposure to this piece was English 101 and it profoundly affected me. It was absolutely mind blowing piece of horror. Thoroughly enjoyed the round robin class discussion after.

message 35: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa Màiri The Yellow Wallpaper is probably THE novel on the alleged nineteenth century women’s disease “hysteria”. I also think it pretty much captures the essence of the issue. The 19th century medical discourse is fascinating as well as grotesque😃

I would have loved to be in on those class discussions. 😎

I don’t believe in hysteria. But the woman won in the end. 🙃

message 38: by Andrée (new) - added it

Andrée This seems like a great read although the condescending husband will drive me bonkers lol
