it was ok
bookshelves: angels, demons, annoying-protagonist, boring, i-own, meh, disappointing

2 stars, unfortunately, which is disappointing since I actually liked the other books. They weren’t perfect or amazingly gripping but they were . . . entertaining. I enjoyed reading them. This one, though, not so much.

First of all, while I appreciate that a Scottish character was put in, I want to make something clear. We don’t talk like that !!! Sure, we may occasionaly toss around words like "aye" or "ya ken" but NOT IN EVERY FRIKIN' SENTENCE. The way Stewart speaks is stereotypical and untrue. Sometimes it got downright annoying. What on earth was Jana Oliver thinking when she wrote this ? Has she ever been to Scotland ? Well clearly not because if she had spent a single day here, she'd know that for the most part Scottish people speak exactly like English people but with a northern accent. So stop, just stop, your attempt at being Scottish is pathetic. Grrr.

Anyway, mini rant over, back to the book.

It was boring. I was bored. That whole Sartael vs Lucifer thing didn't make sense. Who cares which Fallen rules hell ? It would still be hell either way. So that whole battle was pointless and unnecessary. The "battle" in question lasted about 5 pages and nothing really happened. It just seemed like an excuse for Beck to play hero and for Riley to get rescued once again. Why did she even have all those demon fighting lessons with Ori if she was going to rely on Beck to save her butt anyway ? Meh, don't care actually.

What was especially annoying was the way all the secondary characters got pushed aside and forgotten despite making character progress in the previous books. Peter, Simi, Mort, Fireman Jack, Stewart and Ayden are what I like to call cardboard cut-outs. They have no personalities, no traits or interesting qualities. They only appear when they're useful to Riley but otherwise have no purpose in the book. They are essentially a big waste of space when they're not aiding Riley's goals. That's cheating Ms Oliver, all the characters should have a life outside Riley Blackthorne.

I should've felt happy when Beck and Riley finally got together since I've kept my fingers crossed for them from the the very start yet . . . why did I feel so uncomfortable when they became a couple. I guess when they started discussing baby names my alarm bells started ringing. Riley is only 17! It's wayyyyyy to early to be thinking such thoughts. Also when Beck decided to propose on Riley's 18th birthday I got a sick feeling in my stomach. Maybe it's just me but I feel unsure about marrying when you're so young, when you've only just started to live, when you don't yet know what you want from life . . .

Anyway, Foretold was a dissapointing conclusion to the series for me. I won't be rereading and I don't think I'll be recommending it to most people. It's like Marmite, you either love it or hate, and I think I hate it.

Ferdy Great review..I was like WTF when Riley/Beck mentioned baby names and marriage at 18. I can't believe I actually used to like Riley/Beck. It's actually quite creepy the overly sexually experinced guy in his twenties lusting after the sexually inexperinced teenage girl..ugh.

Valeria I'm the same. I used to like them but then they started going at it like bunnies and talking about marriage and babies and all that. I was screaming SLOW DOWN. Riley should NOT be thinking about children when she's still one of them. And, yeah, Beck needed to tone it down a notch, Riley is ,after all, still really young.

Ferdy I think Jana Oliver thought it was romantic that Riley and Beck were talking about marraige and babies but it was cringey because Riley's only 17. I'm sure there were quite a few readers thought it was romantic too but I hated it. They had only been together a few months FFS!

Jana Oliver Though Riley will become engaged at eighteen, that doesn't mean she's immediately going to get married. They will *not* be having babies when she's still a teen. She has some college to attend and will need to do more growing up before she takes on that responsibility and she knows that. They were both thinking "someday" not now. In my mind they won't start their family until she's at least twenty or twenty-one and they're financially stable.

FWIW - I'm not commenting on the review, just clarifying where my head was when it came to Beck and Riley's relationship. Apparently I didn't make that very clear in the story.

Leah i loved that they spoke about baby names and marriage! i think it was obvious that it wasn't going to be some instantanious thing for them. i think that the mention of those things between them was a way for them to give each other hope for a future they didnt know for sure was going to be theirs.

as someone who hates when a series ends, it also leaves the reader with something to imagibe for them even though the series is over. i think it makes the book last longer in the readers/fans mind and i love when an author accomplishes that.

besides all that, this is a story, its fictional and written in a different time and society. one where you dont know if you're going to live until tomorrow (especially for Riley and Beck) i think dropping all notions from our world now is kinda necessary.

Valeria @ Jana - Thanks for clearing that up. That's sounds like a much more reasonable plan for Riley's future. I just got really freaked out when Riley got engaged and started talking about babies because I'm the same age as her and have never ever thought about marrying my boyfriend and having a kid. So it was a big shock.

@ Leah - Glad you liked the ending, it's nice when you can leave a series on a happy note.

I'm not sure what you mean by the different time and society though. From the descriptions in the books, I had the assumption that it's basically our own world in the near future where everything is still kinda the same - but with demons and magic - so the same social principles apply. So really that's no excuse for early marriage. And as for not knowing if you're going to live tomorrow, well, that's exactly like you and me and everyone else though, isn't it ? I could step outside tomorrow and get run over by a car, I could slip and bash my head in the shower, fall and drown in the ocean, yet despite all that I fell no urge, whatsoever, to get married and have a baby. Fear of death is not an excuse for stupid decisions.

CF You are the opposite of me, I thought the second and third ones were awful. But yes the Scottish stereotype did bug me throughout the entire series.
