4.5 Stars
Retrospectively speaking, just thinking about my experience reading this one makes me smile – there is so much about this, especially on the surface, that is laugh-out-loud funny, and that is a rare treat for me. Irby makes me wish I knew her, could hang out with her, meet up at a Starbucks for a cup of coffee now and then and hear her share her stories. She’s got this zing to the way she delivers some of these things that she says, but with an honesty that is sometimes acerbic, but also shows through her somewhat self-deprecating comments now and again just how vulnerable she is, even if she doesn’t want you to see that.
Read this. You’ll need tissues, though, most likely. Not because you’ll be all boo-hoo’ing, crying your eyes out throughout, but because you’ll be laughing so hard that your eyes will need wipers to clear away all that wet stuff running down your face.
Read this - (disclaimer) – if you are easily offended by “naughty language” this is not the book for you.

Thanks, Meredith! It's been a really crazy week, and I've had little time to read and the rest of my time has been filled with other "stuff." This was so much better than I expected it to be, but books that are meant to be funny are often not as funny to me. I love her writing style, though, and I loved reading this! Next week will be marginally less busy, but hope to catch up a bit then.... maybe.... !
Well, Victoria, I loved this, and I might get to write this one soon - there's so many things going on right now that it's hard to find time to write a review. I love her writing... her snarkiness that shows both her vulnerability, and how crazy whip-smart her writing can be at times.
Wasn't this book a blast Cheri. It was smart, it was funny, it was sad. Sam Irby has great observational skills.
Thank you, Nat, it was that unique blend of funny and sad, but so, so smart at the same time. I loved it. Some of her observations had me laughing, and some of them wishing life was always a path filled with kindness - but...
Ah, Felicia, I've been swamped with a zillion things the last couple of weeks, and I just wasn't sure if how long it would take me to catch up!
Cheri, I'm shocked that you've been reading a book with naughty language in it! : o
Excellent review! : )
Excellent review! : )
Ha, Kevin, thank you so much for that! This woman is hysterically funny, but I know there are some people on here that strongly prefer their books without those cursed naughty words / expressions - but not when it's just occasional. Still, I'm sorry that I shocked you! WTF was I thinking! ;- )
Thanks so much, Victoria, and I'm glad that we could entertain you. We are taking our show on the road any day now.... coming to a theatre (puppet, maybe?) near you!
