I loved The Dreamers so decided to read the author’s backlist book. While the apocalyptic theme is similar, the execution is very different. The earth’s rotation has slowed, and the lengthening days and nights affects everything from gravity, crops, tides, and animals, to human behavior. Julia, a 12 year old, is the narrator and she must deal with a very altered, uncertain world and future while also navigating the challenges of life as a tween. I don’t typically enjoy child narrators but Julia stole my heart and I was very taken with her.
The author writes beautifully with a quiet thoughtful prose that appeals to me. It probably won’t satisfy a fan who reads only apocalyptic and sci-fi, but I’d recommend it for those who enjoy literary fiction coming of age novels that offers something just a little different.

Fabulous review Jan! I don't recall liking this one but your review makes me want to reconsider since I loved The Dreamers!

Thanks Susanne! I definitely liked The Dreamers more than this one but I like her writing enough that it appealed to me. Reviews seem to be all over the place. I don't think her books are easy to pigeon hole into a genre. It has elements of sci-fi but there's little explanation or science, which is fine with me, lol

Holly, sorry you didn't enjoy it but not every book is for every reader, right? I do think my love of the author and The Dreamers gave it a bump up 😊

Great review, Jan! I also don't usually enjoy child narrators, so it's good to know it works in this case. I still need to read The Dreamers, but I'll keep this one in mind too. :)

Yun, same here, children don't usually work for me. I do hope you love The Dreamers, it will be on my favorites list!

Thanks Barbara, I think she offers something a little different which is refreshing. And she writes so well. I'd recommend The Dreamers over this one but this is still a worthwhile read 😊

Thanks Julie, she is definitely that and also brave enough to do something a little different when so many books sound alike! I love that.

Yes, this is quite different from The Dreamers. Like you, I don't often enjoy child narrators but this book was different. I love it; glad you enjoyed it too, Jan.

Thanks Jenna, it was so very thoughtfully written I forgot it was a child narrating. I can't wait to see what the author writes next!

Great review, Jan! I am such a stickler when it comes to "suspending disbelief" but all of the praise for this author's work certainly has me curious. Hmmm . . . maybe it'll pay off to try a few chapters.

Melissa, thanks! You know I am a stickler too but I find it easier when it is not supposed to be believed, as in sci-fi (ish) stories. If you decide to read one of her books, go with The Dreamers!
