Wow. Just wow. I've put off reading this one for years because, well.... I'm a wimp. There, I said it. When one of the most well-known names in the contemporary era of the horror genre says something is his scariest book, I take note. It seems bizarre that I finally chose to tackle this one while having children the same age as Louis Creed's, it was precisely the perfect time to pick this up. I listened to almost the entire book over a 24-hour period while road-tripping, and the experience was unparalleled to any I've had in the scope of reading thus far. Side note, Michael C. Hall was the most excellent narrator for this. What likely was a 4 star read initially became a 5 star with no second thought. If you haven't experienced this version I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Rather than a gory, blood and guts type of horror, this is a slow burning, queasy unease that explodes in the final chapters. The suspense nearly did kill me; by the final 25% I found myself wringing my hands and grinding my teeth, preparing myself for the inevitable that I knew was coming, deep down, ever since the beginning. I don't think I could have fully appreciated what King intended to accomplish with this novel if I'd read it before having children of my own. That's not to say that people without kids won't appreciate this as highly, just as statement in my own personal journey. Only King can accomplish so much horror with so little bloodshed.
I finished this days ago but have held off on reviewing until now because I feel like I'm still processing and I can't stop thinking about everything that occurred to this family. I had spent so much time prior to reading this book in preparing myself for the big "things" that I was completely taken aback by how connected I became to the Creed family. This is why the detailed, slow burn; if I didn't care about this family, their neighbors, and the town in general, why would what happens at the end stick with me for the long haul? Oh sure, I would have gasped and guffawed at the disturbing nature of the plot, but I wouldn't have been emotionally invested.
If you've been hiding under my big rock for the past few decades and are just catching up on your Stephen King backlog, like me, I highly recommend picking this up. It's not just about the scares with this one, but the contemplation on how grief can turn any of us into a monster. By far the best audible book I've chosen yet.

Very true! I’ve been meaning to read it for years; no turning back now. 🤣

I remember reading this as a little Natalie. One of my first King’s and I’ve never looked back. I’m due for a re-read :)

Yay! I’m so scared that I’ll never sleep again. But I made it through the shining so I should live, right? 🤣

I can't believe you haven't read this yet I read this when I was a young teenager and it scared me to death but I also enjoyed it in a twisted way .
I've never been able to read horror by anyone else since (I'm going to set myself a challenge and try.)
Good luck i hope you enjoy 😃

This is, by far, my favorite King book and I'm so excited that he is doing a movie remake with more of his "hands on" input, much like he did with It. It should be very horrifying! To say that I LOVED this book is an understatement. Can't wait to read your full review when you're finished.

awesome. Glad you enjoyed it! I read the book and its awesome. Have you seen the film version of it yet? It goes by the book.
Great review Chelsea. It's been many years since I read this one, but I haven't forgotten how much it impressed me. I've read every book King has written and I believe Pet Cemetery is easily among his top 10.

Thanks Amber! I haven’t seen the film but I’m eager to now. I also am interested in the remake coming out next year.

Thanks Wayne! I need to come to you for Stephen King recommendations. So far I’ve read IT, this one, The Gunslinger, The Shining, Cujo, Sleeping Beauties, and The Dark Half. Any ones I should get to immediately?

Hey Chelsea check out Misery, Cycle of the Werewolf, The Eyes of the Dragon, The Green Mile, and Carrie as well as The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon as they are all pretty good reads from Stephen King. Salem's Lot is great too.

No problem Chelsea. Maybe one day we can have another Spooky Stephen King Buddy read again. I still have a few on my TBR I haven't read of his yet.

was this the one he wrote during his boozing and drugging years and he doesn't remember writing? I can't remember if this is that particular book or not
Admittedly I haven't gotten around this one yet ( may or may not have been waiting for your review :) but have to get this audiobook now. I love MCH but sometimes actors don't always make the best narrators so glad it was the best audiobook you've encountered so far. Have high hopes & think it will be the perfect read before my summer hiatus. I've heard Bag of Bones is really good. I've read Joyland which was alright, just a bit on the mild side & more romance-ish than eerie factors. Full Dark, No Stars was great though. 4 short stories & an excellent example of substance in a concise way. Would definitely recommend getting to that one at some point.

I believe that was actually The Shining! This one he wrote after a near death experience of his young son.

I haven’t read this book yet since I am absolutely TRAUMATIZED from the movie. My husband made me watch it years ago and I’ve never been the same 😂 but this review makes me want to run to the library and give it a go!

What a great review! The book obviously made a tremendous impression on you. And your writing is persuasive as always because I want to re-read this book now! I read it a long time ago (as a teenager) and I remember being disturbed by it. But I'm sure now my impression will be different.

One of my all time favorite Stephen King novels. I must have read it a dozen times and each time I enjoy it even more.

I revisited this novel because of the facebook ads stating Michael C. Hall did the updated narration. Audible did not disappoint!

Well, I think the obvious choice you would get from most King fans is 'The Stand', and I would agree. He has so many great ones, so I'll suggest these few; The Green Mile, Misery, The Dead Zone and Needful Things. Can't go wrong with these.

I held off for years also and with the new hype due to the ew Audible release and the new movie filming I had to read it. I have read most of his books but not all. This one was the most disturbing. I would not say it was scary but it was certainly dark and give you a sense of hopelessness. I wish I knew what happened after the end.

Exactly how I felt! That ending was chilling and I was dying to know what happened afterwards.
