MIRACLE AT CHRISTMAS, a new novella by Debbie Mason, is a delightful addition to her Christmas, Colorado series. While the basic plot, big city girl is sent to small town to close an important local business right before the holidays, has been done many times before in Christmas books and movies, Ms. Mason has found a few new twists and turns to make it all seem fresh again.
The real strength in Ms. Mason’s story is in her characters. Charlotte Bailey is a strong woman who works for her family’s business. When everything starts coming apart around her due to her ex-husband, she becomes even more determined to save the family business and to do the right thing for those around her. Her love interest, Dr. Matt Trainor (AKA Dr. McSexy), loves the small town of Christmas and its residents. Matt works with Charlotte to save the hospital she has been ordered to close.
The town is all decked out for the Christmas season and there are plenty of cheerful townsfolk to add to the Christmas spirit. While most of the townsfolk have appeared in other books in the series, I didn’t feel that I had missed anything by not having read them all. This novella works well as a standalone read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this pleasant little story that can easily be read in one sitting. The plot was complex and satisfying enough, however, that I felt like I had read a full-length novel. I’m looking forward to the next visit to Christmas, and I hope we have the chance to check in on Charlotte and Matt.
