Fool Moon (The Dresden Files, #2)
by
2.5 Stars .
Unless things drastically improve by book three, I think it's safe to say that The Dresden Files is one of the most overrated series of all time. At least the first two books, anyway ;]. For the life of me, I can't figure out why these are so outrageously popular. A good friend of mine read them around the same time that I did, and these were the words he used to describe them: "a celebration of mediocrity".
If that doesn't sum up these first two books, I don't know that else can. Completely, utterly, forgettable and did not leave even the barest of an impression on me, beyond a few minutes of mindless entertainment. And that is NOT what I look for in a book. . Is this a bad book? No, I honestly don't think that it's a bad book. I didn't hate it. But like.... there is nothing that would make it a good book, either. The more I think about it, the more I feel like this book fails in everything that it is trying to do.
Considering the genre (Urban Fantasy), you already know that you are going to have fantasy/supernatural elements mixed in with real world elements. The Dresden Files does this by packaging everything into a private investigator mystery/thriller type of book. That's not bad. I love mysteries and thrillers. I LOVE reading fantasy. You'd think that combining the two would make for something really special.
What do most people (myself in particular) like in a good mystery? Well, for one, you like it to be mysterious. You want to be constantly guessing at who the killer is and what is going to happen next. You want to be shocked and taken aback at the climax when the killer is revealed, and feel the thrill of the chase to figure it all out.
What do most people like in a good fantasy? Originality, for one. Interesting and convincing magic systems. A good plot/story. Solid characterization. An "epic" quality that almost takes you out of the real world. Great world building. The list goes on.
The problem here is that, particularly in book two, Jim Butcher is trying to combine all of these mystery and fantasy elements, but he does it in a way that waters down both different aspects of the story. So in the end, we're left with a mystery that isn't actually a very good mystery, and a fantasy that isn't a very good fantasy. I mean... he picked werewolves, of all things, as the topic of this book. Werewolves (or something along that line) make up the material for the most iconic mysteries of all time (Hound of the Baskervilles), and are one of the most overused Urban Fantasy ideas ever made.
It's frustrating.
And to top it off, the main characters are completely mundane. Harry is cool half the time, but then the other half the time he is this boring, brooding, depressed character. Murphy is just flat out annoying. Susan is feisty but also very annoying. And there is precious little character development - it seems like Butcher hordes information about Harry's background, but like a fifteen book commitment is A LOT if you're trying to get into the character.
To finish this lovely review, I thought I would mention how often we hear about Harry's hair - particularly the hair on the back of his neck. I've included just a few of the quotes in the book that reference the hair on the back on Harry's neck. Please enjoy =].
Let's just say it gets exhausting. And Butcher talks even more about the hair of other characters. Like... he legit has an obsession with hair.
Maybe we should stage an intervention?
Anyways. I'll give book three a shot, but if it doesn't rock my world, I'm dropping this series for good, I think.
Happy reading =].

Liam I can't wait to read your thoughts I'm incredibly on the fence about this series. I've been told "give it 3-5 books" & I'm like uhm 😂 anything that takes 3-5 books to get going is too much take off time for me 😬

I'm with you on the first 2 books. They were good, but average at best. Book 3 is what really did it for me. But with that being said I'm on book 9 now and still think that the series is somewhat overrated, way better for sure than the first 2 books though for sure. It's not a series that I would ever recommend that's for sure.

That's what I'm saying haha. People say that to me too, and I'm like.... 3-5 books is a BIG commitment, considering that there's like 15 books in this series. I'll probably give book three a shot and then drop it if I don't think it's worth it. There's too many good books to be reading to kill time on something that's just mediocre haha.

I plan to read book three, and that'll decide whether or not I continue. I need to at least give it a shot, I guess.

I think you will like it, especially compared to the other two. But im not sure if it will be good enough that you are going to want to continue. Happy reading! I will keep an eye out for your review :)
Book 2 is the worst! Book 3 and 4 are much better. And then it is just up and up from there. Perseverance pays off with this series
I'm with you. I fail to see what all the hype is about this series and I've read up through the third book. Life is too short and if it takes that many books for a series to hook me then I'm just not willing to invest my time, especially when there are so many other series that do manage to hook me right from the start. Too many books and I'm not going to live forever. :-)

I certainly hope so, because this was just not good at all for me haha. I'll stick through book three before making any decisions =].

Exactly how I feel. Was book three much better, in your opinion? How did you like it?

Haha - shave his hair off!! That's funny. I agree with all your points on this. I didn't really start loving this series until about book 4. I kept reading because I'd picked up the first 8 with a killer audio deal, which in hindsight was risky. I've discovered that many urban fantasies are kind of mediocre, so compared to the awful ones I was reading at the time, Dresden was better. Books 5-11 contain some of my favorite elements from the genre. If you don't continue, maybe I'll just tell you the best parts haha.
Liam, I didn't really notice any big improvement across the first three books. They're popcorn fluff books IMO but those types of books serve a function too. Sometimes popcorn fluff is what you need.
I agree with Veronica, the first three books are total popcorn entertainment. Nothing earth shattering, but very good nonetheless. I looked back and rated three of the first four 3-stars... I read them all pretty quickly and I own Book 5, just haven't read it yet. Am still waiting for the series to "really take off", but I don't feel like it's been a waste of time at all.
Keep reading, they are good! I liked them all, but then again I started reading them when there was only 2 books in the series and no hype. With the exception of Ghost Story each successive book in the series seems to get better. The earlier books do tend to be the weakest when I do a re-read.
While it's hardly a ringing endorsement, FOOL MOON is by a large margin, the worst book in the series. I still don't like Murphy for her actions in this book and hope she'll get eaten by wolves.
Great review Liam. There's a lot of great series out there so perhaps this series just isn't for you. I'm up to book 10 and really enjoying the series, but it did take until book 3 for me to feel like I wanted to read the whole series. I may not have pushed on to book 3 if I wasn't reading it as part of a series read in a group as this book remains to date the weakest book in the series for me.
Completely agreed, so much so that this one was a dnf for me. I've heard that things gets better around the next one so I haven't ruled the series out completely, but there's no overstating just how bad the first two books are as introduction. As others have said, three to five books to get a series off the ground is, well, a lot. I mean like, I could read another entire completed series in the time that you're still just messing around. But the supermajority keeps saying that it gets *really* good, eventually, so, you know, maybe.
"A celebration of mediocrity" is a really good description. I like the series when I'm reading something that is longer or more complicated for balance, but in no world would I rank this series in my top 10 or anything. I've only read up to book 5 so far.

Yeah like literally though haha. I keep hearing it gets better, so I'm going to stick around for another book or two. I just don't know if it's *that* good enough that I want to make a 15 book commitment, you know?

Yes that's totally true! Sometimes you need something just to veg out too. For me I usually pick something YA, but honestly this wasn't even really entertaining enough for me to actually just enjoy the fluff haha.

That's good at least. My issue is that I have a lot of books to read haha. So if anything, these will just be an occational in-betweener to read between all of the other books I'm getting through. Almost like a palate cleanser, if you want to think of it htat way.

Thanks Angela =]. I'm just hoping that Jim Butcher starts giving us a little bit more about Harry's story and background than we've gotten so far. I think that would help me get more invested into the story. I have a hard time getting into ANY book if I don't care about the characters.

These books are definitely palate cleansers I think. I'll read them in between some of the larger more epic books that I'm reading, but I don't know that they would ever be a favorite, even if they get "better" like everybody is saying they do. *shrugs*

I can understand your hesitance about reading anymore of the books. I wasn't that big of a fan on the first three books but I loved Urban Fantasy so I stuck it through. It does get better and you'll get a lot more on Harry's past in the upcoming books.
so Liam... does your hair stand at the end of this book??? I was never interested in this series somehow, and probably will never will. Urban Fantasy doesnt sit well with me. Great review man!
I read and liked the series back in the day, but I'm able to see some problematic aspects of it now and I fear the Suck Fairy might have visited if I try the early ones again. The third book starts getting more involved in longer term plotlines, but if you're not liking it now, I'm not sure that will change.
Great review! I'm with you on pretty much everything in this review. And I'm giving it that one more book and then I'm out.

Agree... don´t know why it is so popular and Jim Butcher is usually said to be an awesome writer, I was expecting a lot more....
Some other repetitions that could have been written better:
-The use of the verb "snarled" or "growled"
-How many times he mentions his duster
-How often he called women "bitches", which I still am not sure is supposed to be intentional due to the fact the story is about werewolves...
