I'm really not feeling this one. It's been a couple days since I've read this, and even then I was skimming. I have no desire to pick it up again.

All these characters do is think about each other, which is fine for a while but then it gets boring. When they have conversations, they're not very exciting and I'm left feeling like I'm missing something. That may be because they met in the past and had a brief affair, but all we know of that time is that they had hot sex. I have no idea how deeply they connected through conversation, which makes their present conversations seem much too familiar, and their physical attraction too shallow. I think this book would have benefited from a few chapters from the past in the beginning, which is how it was done to great effect in Stormswept.

There were also little things about the writing that annoyed me.

- She gave her cheeks a light pinch, just to put some color there. Cosmetics were for the demimonde.

Was that really necessary? Plenty of female characters do this without feeling the need to remind the reader that they're still better than whores. Annoying.

- He would give her the protection of his body and his title. But his heart would never be hers.

What? She hasn't expressed an interest in his heart. Unnecessary angst in a book full of angst.

Kait There was a lot of slut shaming in this one that made me sad. Glad I’m not the only one who noticed it!

Heather ~*dread mushrooms*~ Yeah, it didn't need to be there at all!

Sarah Mac Because god forbid a heroine actually need some occasional cosmetic assistance to perk up her color. 🙄 Application of kohl, blush, or liptint automatically makes you a heat-seeking whore, I guess?

Because if you're not a natural beauty, you're not heroine material, of course.

Sarah Mac That's a trope that annoys me more & more as I get older & more grumpy. :P I can deal with a heroine being a Natural Beauty, but when they start judging other women just for wearing makeup is when it pisses me off. But the slut-shaming-by-cosmetics has gotten way more prevalent in the newer romances. So annoying.

Heather ~*dread mushrooms*~ Yeah, I do the grumpy thing with books too, lol. And in this case it was her literally just pinching her cheeks. Pretty sure almost every heroine does that at some point. Why would their mind go straight to "Welp, at least I'm not a whore!"

Sarah Mac Heheheh. No doubt biting her lips to add some red = the gateway drug to a long, dark road of prostitution. :D

Heather ~*dread mushrooms*~ Bahahaha so true.
