it was amazing

A masterpiece.

Like a fable, this has become a part of our cultural consciousness. Santiago's simple heroism is a benchmark for all who persevere and endure.

Sarah This was a wonderful story. I have no idea why, since it was just a man, the sea, and all the little fishies, but it was incredibly engrossing.

Saul Escalona Hi Lyn, I agree with you 100 %. I am not fan of E. Hemingway, but if you happen to know of a book as excellent as this one written by Hemingway, I will appreciate your suggestion.

Lyn Thanks Sarah and Saul, Hemingway is tough to review, tough to fully understand. I don't and don't prevent to. This was just simply great. My other favorite of his is The Sun Also Rises

David Sarkies Awesome picture.

Sarah Yeah, that picture was a great find. It was perfect for this.

Cecily I can't say it's part of my cultural consciousness, but I was really impressed with this book. Nice summary.

Which was also the theme of Islands in the Stream, and yet it sticks with me almost 50 years since I read it.

Lyn Yes, a powerful work, I probably need to reread

Derek I haven't read much Hemingway, but my father (who I'm almost certain—but he regularly surprised me—hadn't read much Hemingway, either) gave me Islands in the Stream and one other when I think I was 12. I can't remember what the other one was, and Islands wasn't the sort of book I was reading then, or any time since, but I remember it far better than some books I've read in the past month.
