A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness is a book like no other and one that I'll never forget.

My first rating in January on this book was 4 stars. I couldn't figure out why, I just didn't love the story. I re-read it this past weekend and I've revised my review.

*This review may contain spoilers for those who haven't read the book...

I was very angry, then sad, then had mixed emotions in between. My main issue when I first read it was that I wanted more of an ending, or perhaps more before the ending. Maybe I wanted a different outcome because I was so hopeful for Conor. I don't know, but after reading it again, without a doubt, I know I just can't handle the truth. As a mom, my worst nightmare. With that said, I've pondered over it and feel this book deserves 5 stars.

It's a book I'd still recommend to anyone and I'm very much looking forward to seeing the movie.

The illustrations by Jim Kay make the book feel so real. This is a book I want to keep forever.

5**** to one powerful story.

Watched the movie and loved it, but not as much as the book...

Jasmine I agree with you about the ending even though I'm kind of satisfied with it somehow. There could always be another outcome but after everything that happened, including those tales the monster tried so hard to tell Conor, I guess we couldn't ask for more. :P

By the way, what kind of ending or epilogue do you want it to be if the story were different? :O

Mischenko Jasmine, I really don't know. It really could be that it was a little emotional for me. Or, maybe more of an ending, not so abrupt? I enjoyed the book and was glad to have read it. I may even read it again in the future.

Haha, I see. It's indeed a bit rushed in the end (I was so absorbed in the fourth tale and suddenly, everything happened so quickly and didn't realize the story had ended... :'( ) but still, I'm so happy you enjoyed reading this after all! :DD Definitely need to reread it later and maybe you'll feel differently then. ^^

Mischenko Me neither. I ended up reading this twice. The first time I had a really hard time with it, but the second time I was able to view it a little differently. It was difficult though. I hope eventually you get to it. :)
