The Graces (The Graces, #1)
by
I can see how The Graces could be appealing for some readers (Kirkus, for one). The patient kind, who can get past a ridiculous, unbelievable plot and flat characters for the sake of a twist. I am not that reader. I believe that there's such a thing as too little, too late, too bad. Also, I totally saw it coming.
Honestly, I don't even have it in me to write an organized or ranty review, but I only want to forget the hours I spent reading it. Can I have my time back, please?
I just need a Forgetfulness Potion is all. What? Everyone can be a wiiiiitch, right?
Daaaaark. Oh, how The Graces tries to be dark.
Too bad The Graces lacks an atmosphere.
Therefore it isn't dark, but on the contrary the plot was ridiculous and made it hard to suspend my disbelief from the get-go. Not to mention the confusion - not the good kind of confusion, but the annoying, aggravating one, when I repeat endlessly little beauties like, "but what the HELL is going on?!". Oh, sure, the storybecame interesting started making sense. Sort of. At 75%.
I don't know about you, but it's waaay too late for me, especially because the twist was so obvious that the only reaction it created was making me roll my eyes. Because, you know, it couldn't have been ANYTHING ELSE.
Finally, I would usually complain about the random time jumps and the awkward way the scenes were cut off, but honestly, I cared so little that I was glad for the story to get somewhere (except, not really). This is not good.
Where do I even start? Oh, there :
☑ Nonsensical and cliché sentences : "He smelled like a thicker, manlier kind of vanilla."
☑ Boring and oh so deep conversations : "The thing is, " he said softly, "we're all going to die." "Yes." "But the first time you really realize it... how do you get over that?"
Oh, please protect me from teenager philosophy.
☑ CURIOUSER AND CURIOUSER ← Why do I get the impression that these words are going to hunt me? Oh, yes. Because I read them way too many times - more than once was already too much.
I didn't care about any of them, whether they be main characters or merely useless puppets. I was so ready to be engrossed and fascinated by the Graces and their secrets that you can't imagine my disappointment when I realized how fake and unrealistic they sounded.
And god, how I'm tired of omniscient first POV. No, you cannot. Yes, you actually have to choose. Indeed River spends the whole book explaining to the reader what other people think, and I'm sorry, but is it supposed to make me think that she's so clever? Because it doesn't work. She appears delusional and instable (also hateful) (view spoiler) .
Oh, and the mum. Oh please this is ridiculous. I've read my fair share of absent mothers in YA, but never before did I read such out of the world conversations :
"I just want to talk to him [her dad]. I just want to know he's still... he's still around."
She raised her arms and her voice. "Well, he's not! He's not hiding under the stairs, is he?! I just... look. If it's going to be like this again, maybe we need to have a talk about that medication you were on before we moved. Maybe it was too soon to stop taking it."
Of course. How dares she, missing her dad like this?! Of course she needs medication! ARGG I can't even.
"She shrugged. Her hair crinkled as it met her shoulders. "I thought you said you were at a friend's house. Why, are you going to tell me you were out all night clubbing?" Her grin was hopeful."
HOPEFUL. Right. I'm hopeful too. I hope I will never meet characters who are so judgmental, intolerant and frankly insufferable.

"I'm still wondering if this is ridiculous on purpose or if it's a flaw. I'll need a complete turn pretty soon, because so far, I'm frowning a lot. Also, can someone tell me what the fuck that means : "He smelled like a thicker, manlier kind of vanilla." HUH?! Plants have gender?!"

I just read the synopsis. Sounds extremely intriguing. Now I'm trusting you to tell me how this goes! :D

ME TOO. It's like, it's SO BAD you just KNOW that there is something coming because really, what's the point?! I didn't like the writing, it was confusing, ridiculous, and predictable. I wouldn't have finished it if I hadn't an arc, to be honest :/

Lmao WELL, I am one of the first (the first?) to 1 star it so maybe I just didn't get it but ugh. Maybe wait for other reviews - it comes out in September - but if you still want to know I'll tell you then.

The synopsis reminds me of The Dolls, which I thought was kind of meh, and mostly no one really liked. So I'll be staying far far away from this one.

Ooh no idea what The Dolls is but I'll stay away XD

Ooh I didn't read it. Now, I really don't like books where I have to wait for the ending for the story to become interesting. I need to be interested before, you know? The last part of the graces was really better, but too late for me :/
agreed. i'll usually grudgingly give another star for a superb ending, but i resent it at the same time.
Well isn't that such a disappointing read. I might just read this to see how I feel for myself! XD

Same here. I would have usually added a second star, but I was too disappointed, I think :(

no, you are absolutely right not to cave! i am too easily cowed by guilty 'feel-bad' feels. which is why my three-stars range from "i liked this a bunch" to "this was not great but two stars feels rude." it also allows me to deflect the sads of authors to whom i have given three stars, by citing this fact without specifying where they fall on that spectrum.

Yes, I see what you mean. My 3 ratings are good now (liked but didn't love, or liked but flaws that I can't overlook) but I used to do the same before (so all my older ratings are kinda messed-up). For the graces, I decided on 1 because I would have DNFed it if it wasn't an arc :/ I'm still sure that many readers will like it, like Nocte I think?

I'm so sorry you didn't like this! I'm sad to see it was so disappointing, this was one of my most anticipated reads. I hate when a pretty cover and an amazing synopsis don't live up to the expectations :/

Vanilla scented men again ?!!!!! It has been twice this week that I read a review with somebody ranting about a vanilla scented man ! Is it a new trend ?! Is it some kind of weird product placement for a future vanilla scented men perfume ?!!!
Don't get it !
Anyway thank u I had a good laugh xD

75% is way too late in the game for me also. I don't have the patience for that anymore lol. Wonderful review, Anna, and hopefully your next book is soooo much better!

Thank you!!! I'm just not that patient, I mean why do that?! Ugh.

I abandoned this after 120 pages. I shall take your advice and save whatever time I have left by not wasting it on this book
Wait, omniscient 1st POV exists? I don't think I've encountered a book like that before, and probably for good reason :x
It was barely a twist at all! There were obvious hints //throughout// the goddamn book. When they 'revealed' she was a witch, I swear to God I had to resist rolling my eyes. Honestly by the end I was hoping they'd just sacrifice the protagonist because that would've been a way better ending than the one we got. At least it would've been somewhat interesting if by the end we came to realize that the story was written from the perspective of a deluded antagonist after all.
Okay so, before I had a Goodreads account, I found this review online and read it out to my mum, and we had so much fun with this review because we agreed on every single point. I cannot even put into words how much The Graces frustrated me. The writing and the style just reads like Twilight, and River was just so obsessive to the point of being scarily unhinged. And not only her - every single character is just seriously messed up to the point it’s like…this isn’t even realistic, I’m genuinely concerned. Wolf was the ONLY character I liked. And then he died. And then he was resurrected. Pray tell, Graces, how exactly do you plan to explain that?
In short, I love your review, and thank you so much for this. You have no idea how much I appreciate your review, you have seriously helped me relax my frustrations at this disaster.
