So sue me. I hated it.
How this came about: I (along with a lot of the country) read and loved Coates' Between the World and Me. I liked it so much, that I asked if any other teachers at school wanted to read it and discuss it with me - something I've never done before. ...And then I read it again.
And then, the group (who didn't universally love the book) wanted to read and discuss The Case for Reparations, by Coates, which I also loved.
So, one of the guys in the group saw this was coming out and got it for me.
Good on him, but I didn't like this. Maybe this is the DC/Marvel divide? I didn't know the backstory, and had a hard time following it. I mean, I shouldn't have. I love comic books. I even went through a collection stage.
My favorite was Nightwing:
And that might have been the problem with Black Panther. I didn't have previous ties to it. I loved Batman, so NightWing was an easy sell. I especially liked when they fought common villains. ...When the villains from Gotham would vacation in Bludhaven... you know?
*Side Note* At least the guy who got me this knew enough to get me a direct edition. So, props to him for that.
All that to say, I don't think it's because I'm not a "comic book" person, because - although I'm not like... a superfan, I am a fan.
In the letters section, Coates broadcast his insecurities about writing a comic book. So, I get to be the guy he let down. The good news for Coates is, Black Panter was the year's best selling comic book.

Yeah, I'd give more than one issue a read before you decide, but I also can't tell if you only read one issue or if you read the collection of the first four issues. Since you mention the letters page and only show part of the first issue cover, it's implied your review's only for one issue.
Also, a Direct Edition doesn't have any importance for value, not anymore (it's sometimes did, in the '80's); it only means it was sold through a comic shop and not on the newsstand but either way, it's the exact same comic, with no difference in print runs.

Well, I learned something new today. :)
Maybe I'll read a couple more issues. I was reviewing the first one only. I thought that "book one" meant the first comic book in the series.
@Bryan, people use this site for a lot of reasons. But you're right, I haven't had a lot of positive feedback about the Nightwing/face picture. Looking at it now, I think I look a little too much like the old Nightwing on the cover.

B) Most Marvel/DC is complete crap, not worth the space it takes up.
C) It takes a lot of TIME to wade through the garbage and find the good comics, most of which come from Image these days, a few from Marvel, and a few from DC. As you ar unfamiliar with comics, it seems incredibly unfair that you read one issue and leave a 1 star review.
D) Not sure why we need to see a picture of your face holding Nightwing? I thought this was a site for books, not vanity/trying to hook up?
