Having now finished this book that came so highly recommended, I have to admit that what I feel mostly is indifference. I wanted to love it, but I didn't. That being said, I didn't dislike it either. The problem was that I just didn't care a whole lot one way or the other.
The story is about a young woman, MacKayla, that goes to Ireland to play detective after the death of her sister. In no time, she's uncovered a whole new reality, full of supernatural beings that she had only thought existed in fairytales. The more clues she unearths, the more she begins to wonder if she's following in her sister's footsteps.
Along the way, she partners up with Jericho, who is looking for the same ancient book that MacKayla is. The sexual tension is off the charts between these two. However, MacKayla doesn't know if she can really trust him or not.
There is a fair amount of action/adventure in this book and it is relatively suspenseful. I would have liked more romance, but it just wasn't that type of book. It is the first book in a series, so that may change as the series progresses.
Although the story was just kind of "okay" for me, I did think that the narration was done well. So often when I listen to audiobooks, the narrators butcher a southern accent. Often times, it ruins the entire story for me as I want to cringe and cover my ears. Finally, somebody got it right!
Overall, I give it 3-stars. I would have given the narration 4 or 5-stars though. It was a nice story to pass some time, but I didn't love it like most of my friends did.

I have had this book on my read-now list for awhile now but was hesitant to jump in. Your review was very helpful for me to decide if I want to wait awhile longer. Thank you for a great review.
I really hope you read on because this series get better and better as you read on. Great review, Candace.

Brilliant review, Candace <3 Sorry it didn't hit the spot; do you think you will continue with the series?
Hi Candace, sorry you didn't like this one. The story does unfold as you keep reading(in my opinion) Hope you find the other books in the series tolerable.
Your review made me chuckle. I read through the whole series feeling indifferent...until it wasn't. Once I got to the bit that changed it all I wanted to go back and re-read it with new eyes. Jericho is a God eyes ;) ♥

Thanks, Linda. Everyone tells me that it gets better as it goes, so I've agreed to give the second book a shot. If it doesn't improve for me, I'm hanging it up. :) xoxo

Hi, Bindi! I didn't find it to be horrible. I liked it. It just didn't really blow me away like I expected. It was a middle of the road, "okay" type of read for me. I keep hearing that it gets better also. I'm going to read the next book in the series, to see if it gains appeal for me. :) xoxo

Thanks, Stacey! That is great to hear. I am going to read the next one, since everyone says it gets better as it goes. It's good to hear I'm not the only one who felt that way though. :) xoxo

Great review. ❤️
I also didn't love this book like others did but my friend made me promise to read the first three books and then if I still didn't like it I could stop. It was book three that hooked me. So you might keep going and see what you think. :)

Candace, it really does get way better after first book. I remember I actually set the first book down a few times and then decided to push through it, but once I started the second book it became my obsession. I loved the other books! :)

I definitely feel the same about southern accents - because I have one. Haha. I didn't check out the audiobooks on this one, but I had a tough time getting through the first two books, and I think I took a break in the third. In the end, the series as a whole was epic, but some of them are harder to get through by themselves.

I'm glad it isn't just me. For some reason narrators seem to have a tough time getting the accent right. More often than not, it sounds Appalachian or just like some backwoods, uneducated stereotype. This time, the narrator got it right. Kudos to her!
Unfortunately, the story wasn't as impressive as the narration in my opinion. Everyone tells me it gets better though. In all fairness, it wasn't bad. I had just expected greatness after reading so many glowing reviews. I had set the bar a little high. :) xoxo

I read like the first three books and felt the exact same way. It was hard to tell where I was because I bought the whole series on my Nook and it was a couple thousand pages. I finally gave up. Thank goodness I'm not the only one!!! I didn't listen to the audiobook but I've found those to even enhance books as well...

Yeah I always have to caveat this one for people...like don't push through if you're not feeling it. Put it down and come back. Some of the graphic/traumatic experiences were understandably too much for some of my friends. In the end, this is our free time, you know? So valuable. Spend it doing what you love. <3

I completely agree. I have a compulsive need to finish every book I start though. It is extremely rare for me to DNF a book. So, it's easier said than done for me. I wonder if they have a med for that? LOL. :) xoxo
