bookshelves: recommend, historical, non-ya, reviewed, project-review-everything, 3-and-a-half-stars, reread, project-5-star
Read 2 times. Last read February 12, 2024 to February 14, 2024.

this has been another installment of project 5 star, and the nightingale is the latest unlucky candidate: a book that a past, more loving version of me loved, confronted by the dark abyss that is my present-day heart.

once upon a time i called this book the mac + cheese of historical fiction, because it is cheesy and cozy and makes you feel satisfied. years later, i am pleased to confirm it is that.

what it is not is very accurate or even very good. it is readable and turn your brain off and kind of vaguely inspiring. it prompts emotions from you in the least intellectual way possible.

somewhere within me is still the 11 year old whose favorite book was kristin hannah's firefly lane. and while that book is better than this one, it still feels kind of the same.

however strange that is.

bottom line: more fun than it should be.

3.5

John of Canada I love your lyrical review writing. I think you are a genius. Your project obviously worked.

Laura P. I am devoted fan of your reviews forever! :D I am, however, finding more on more on which we completely disagree (it was rarely a case in the beginning). This book has put me in such a reading slump. I'm at 50% and not sure I can carry on.
But that mac and cheese comparison! xD I don't like mac and cheese so there's that ha ha ha

Murielle Standley I’m a new fan of your reviews but expect myself to become devoted.

message 4: by Sarah Ellen (new)

Sarah Ellen You are so brave for doing this 5 star reread thing! I would never do it because I know 54 year old, stone hearted me, would probably HATE all of my youthful five star books.

TheQueensQuill I read your review for this book a while ago and was confounded that it was five stars? I could not believe my eyes.
