Shadow Games (The Chronicles of the Black Company, #4)

Good but not as good as 2 previous books.
The pacing was a bit uneven. As Black Company travels South to mysterious Khatovar we have some slow moments especially in the first half of the book. Once they reach exotic southern towns with unpronounceable names action picks up. Mysterious and menacing enemies and no less mysterious allies with questionable motives, intrigue of Company's own past and what lies over the edge of the map, fights with the Company's signature magic and trickery and massive battles with the showmanship worthy of Rammstein concert. It was hard to put down the book towards the end. And then ... cliffhanger! Gah! No other option but jump straight on to the next book. Be warned! Better have it ready. :)
Important part of the story plays developing romantic relationship between the main character and (view spoiler) . And here we had few hiccups. For the most of the book I felt Croaker could rival famous Harry Dresden with his (view spoiler) . But I guess in the end Harry wins - or looses - depends how look at it :P
There were too many (view spoiler) . Felt forced. Towards the end of the book (view spoiler) got tiresome. Croaker acting all shy blushing teenager like seemed a bit off character to me - he's too old and cynical for that. And then the revelation of (view spoiler) was plain ridiculous. She is 400 years old FFS! Unbelievable and totally unnecessary. I did my best to forget and pretend it never happened so I can enjoy the rest of the story. (which was worth it)
In spite of the few mishaps - it was enjoyable read with plenty of action in the second half of the book.

"I allowed foraging under strict rules, looting only where people had fled. It worked, mostly. Trouble came only where I expected it, from One-Eye, whose motto is that anything not nailed down is his and anything he can pry loose isn’t nailed down.

That little shit Goblin was standing on his saddle. He was bent over with his pants down, telling the world what he thought of the Shadowmasters and their boys.

Ha! You mean like this one: "For the most of the book I felt Croaker could rival famous Harry Dresden with his (view spoiler)." ? LOL To be honest I did not realise how it looks like with a hidden spoiler till now.. -.-
But I will gladly take a credit :D
Happy to entertain! :D

Yep, you already mentioned that and I took a wild guess - and Ha! apparently I got it right! :D I mean I picked the least likely candidate and said it as a joke.. but the usual rule of the good crime that the least likely suspect will be the guilty one works even here ;)
My only worry is that there might be even less sarcasm and humour. I hope some other characters will make it up for that.

Yep, and it was completely unnecessary. Her trepidations could have stemmed from much more believable reasons as in not being with anyone for a long time due to trust issues, never as an equal to equal, without the shield of her magic and position and so on.

Yes, you are right, at first I thought it was because of something like that. And as I think more about it, the idea wasn't developed more, just mentioned once.
