I continue to love this series and burned through all 333 pages of this fifth installment in a little over 3 days. The Perigord region of France is full of caves, one of which is featured as a setting of this book. I complained that in book four, The Crowded Grave, it seemed out of balance in the things we've come to enjoy of Bruno's life in St. Denis. The community, the romance, sex and food seemed to be squeezed in, unconnected to the main terrorism focus. In this one, the pendulum seems to have swung the other way. Full of regional scenes and dinners cooked by Bruno, romance, and sex, the murder mystery felt less dominant. No complaints here! On to The Resistance Man!

On another note, I want to re-watch Cave of Forgotten Dreams, the brilliant Werner Herzog movie. It's available on Netflix streaming here in the States. (From the blurb: This fascinating documentary offers an unprecedented look at France's Chauvet Cave, which contains the oldest human-painted images found on Earth.) I believe this cave is in the region of the Bruno series.

Icewineanne I purchased the first 4 books in this series without having read anything by the author. I purchased them because of the beautiful artwork on the cover & the series sounded so romantic with food , wine & a gorgeous setting. Unfotunately, i was underwhelmed by the 1st book & am now kicking myself for purchasing the other 3.
I did see the Herzog film at TIFF. Unfortunately it put me to sleep, but the parts i saw were very interesting.
Let me know how you like it :-)

I love this series! For me it's a welcome break from the grim/gritty variety of murder mystery that I read (and also like) a lot. I'm in love with Bruno. I saw Cave of Forgotten Dreams when it first came out - I've fast-forwarded through much of it this time around so I can see more of the countryside. There was a part of me that found it boring, but also a part that found it fascinating!

Icewineanne Yes, during the slower, more analytical talking heads part was when I nodded off.
I also am not a fan of many grim/gritty mysteries which is why I was looking forward to reading this series. I was disappointed that it just didn't work for me. Sometime down the road, I will make another attempt & read the 2nd book in the series. Perhaps I just read the 1st book at the wrong time.... :-)

I hope you do read #2 in the series - all about wine! One of my faves.

Icewineanne You said the magic word "wine"! Always attend our international wine fests here. So I'll give it a go towards the end of summer & let you know if we agree :-) :-)

Margitte I'm still hooked to this series and was fascinated by the caves. This was a great book in this series.

Oh my, Margitte! I'm just seeing your comment . . . two years later! Are you still reading this series? I was rereading my reviews in prep to write my thoughts about the latest Bruno. :)
