I don't even know where to start this review. I am typing it through teary eyes, so I will keep it simple. (Insert tissues here)
My pick for Vianne when this becomes a movie is Naomi Watts or Kate Winslet and for Isabella is Julianne Hough or Amanda Seyfried. Let's see if Hollywood takes my suggestion!
This WW2 novel was so beautifully written. This war was a time of bitter hatred and in this story Kristin Hannah brings to life love, survival, bitterness, strength, and persistence.
Vianne and Isabelle are the most outstanding characters I've ever read. It would be an honor to know them if they were real. I have so much more I could add but I will not because it would take so much of my review.
This is a story that will make you cry and have hope in believing that if you keep stepping forward and never looking back you will make it.
I highly recommend this book. It's absolutely wonderful and a gorgeous story. I will cherish it always as it is now one of my top 3 favorites :)
I'm looking forward to this movie becoming a film. I will be there opening night :) in the front row!!!

This book is full of feelings :) I read through other GR posts on this novel and some people gave it 3 stars and I even saw a few 2 ratings and I couldn't believe it! This book was so amazing and so many things happened in it that I wasn't prepared for at all! I love novels like that. Kristin Hannah did a fantastic job. I will definitely read more from her :)
Great review, Mandy. My intuition keeps belittling me for having not picked this up yet but I hope to rectify that situation at a book sale this week.
Mike you will enjoy. I think this is one of the few books that made me cry my eyes out. Very few books have moved me and this one definitely did. What is it about war books that is so moving?
Of course I have to ask, Mandy ... What are your other 2 top favorites?
Great review Mandy! I heard it was being made into a movie too. If done right it will make for a fantastic film!
I was waiting for your review, Mandy!! So thrilled that you loved it!! Wonderful review, and love your actress picks!!!
I can see her as Vianne. I could also see Emily Blunt play her. I would like the French actress from Inglorious Bastards, Melanie Laurent, to play Isabella. I could just picture the two in my head. I'd love to cast books! This is fun! :)
Oh yeah she would! I thought Kate Winslet would make a great Vianne as well. People just need to pay us to read and then pick the actors and actresses for the movies!
I have this on my shelf & plan to read very soon. Have you read any other books by Kristin Hannah? I've read quite a few. I highly recommend Winter Garden if you haven't read it yet. One of my favorite WWII books is My Enemy's Cradle. I've shared it with about 8 people and everyone loved it.
I will check that out! One WW2 novel I loved was The Soldier's Wife. I also really liked At the Water's Edge!
Great review, Mandy! This is also one of my all time favorites. She is such a great writer. I'm dying for the movie.
I can't wait to see the movie either. I'm very excited to see who they cast, especially Gaeton and Julien.... I can see this movie winning several awards!
I felt exactly the same about this one Mandy far surpassed All the light we cannot see by Anthony Doer and that won the Pulitzer prize!
I've not read that yet but I'm planning to! This book just opened something up inside, I've always know this war was terrible and learned about it in college but to read it and feel the pain they did was so new to me and made me appreciate all the sacrifices people made. Such a beautiful novel!
Mandy such a lovely review. I have this on hold from the library albeit a very long list. At that rate I might see movie first if Emma Watson is in it :)
Lol :) I hope you get it soon. I couldn't believe the library in my town had it and no one had grabbed it yet!!! I snatched it right up. I took it back and told the librarian it was such a great read she checked it out for herself!
Fabulous heartfelt review, Mandy. It was in my top 3 for 2014. I absolutely loved it and I am not a historical fiction reader. I read it as I won it in a Goodreads Giveaway. I am so glad to have won it. I totally agree with your review and encourage EVERY reader to check it out. I will never forget it and still think about it at times even now.
I keep reading great reviews, like yours, of this book. I am definitely going to have to read it. I read something once ages ago by this author that smacked of chick lit, which put me off, but this sounds unmissable.
This book is fan freaking tastic! I hope you enjoy it Arah-Lynda it is beautifully written. I was like you and had seen several reviews and then one day at my library I grabbed it and I could not put it down!
It has been a long time since a book moved me to tears but this one did. This was one of the best books I have ever read and I highly recommend it. It's a wonderful story and so well written.
If it becomes a movie, it would have to cut a lot of cliché's that's implemented in the book to be a great movie.
