Expulsion from The Garden of Eden, Reinterpreted

We take upon ourselves the power of Judgment, without the power of Discernment. This is the message of the Expulsion story:

Consider Hobbes' discussion of Genesis:

"[We can look at] “You shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”(Genesis, 3. 5) And, “Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee thou shouldest not eat?”(Genesis, 3. 11)

For the cognizance or judicature of good and evil, being forbidden by the name of the fruit of the tree of knowledge, as a trial of Adam’s obedience, the devil to inflame the ambition of the woman, to whom that fruit already seemed beautiful, told her that by tasting it they should be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Whereupon having both eaten, they did indeed take upon them God’s office, which is judicature of good and evil, but acquired no new ability to distinguish between them aright."

My Take: The Idiotic Species

God was just having fun with Adam. The fruit was nothing special. God just told them that it will give them the power of knowing Good and Evil -- to tempt them, to see if they can resist: After all, any intelligent dude will know that mortals can never distinguish Good and Evil!

But they bought it! And ate of the fruit. God was disappointed that his creation turned out to be such a doofus species. He banished them and forgot about them.

So they left, abandoned by God. But they still believed they had the power of discerning Good and Evil and used that misunderstanding to guide them.

They have been fighting wars ever since, killing and exploiting each other, always convinced their own side, their own way of doing things, their own way of looking at things, etc. is "Good', and the other "Evil".

God, when he cares to have look at this corner of the universe, still shakes his head in disbelief. No other species in the entire universe had failed that simple test, you know. We were the only dropouts.

Fionnuala Good bit of evil satire, Riku!
Seriously, this notion of good and evil needs a whole rose bush of satire thrown at it, thorny bits and all.
Our enemies are always evil. Isn't that quite a magic trick for humanity to have pulled off?

Thanks, Fi! The trick was Satan's way of making sure we never got anywhere. No credit to us. I should have mentioned the Snake's insidious role and his gloating ever since, but chose to leave it out. :)

Gregsamsa Excellent.

I've always wondered why God would put that tree like right there. Or create it in the first place. The whole thing seems like some research experiment in a psych department but it's all rigged.
