In the Woods (Dublin Murder Squad, #1)

Excellent! I can't say how much I loved In the Woods. Fantastic mystery with enough hints thrown in that I was guessing the entire time and still didn't get it right. Even better, this is a crime drama that doesn't focus on the unsettling details of the crime, or the disturbing particulars of the perpetrator. Rather, Tana French introduces the reader to the detectives working the case and lets us view all of the icky details through their jaded eyes.
Initially I wondered if a female author can get a male protag right. Detective Rob Ryan wasn't, ah... he was sort of that perfect guy. From a girl's point of view, that is. Well dressed, polite with just enough snark, loves to stay up talking, none of the usual male obsession with gross body functions. But as the book progressed, and Rob spiraled deeper into a nasty funk, he was definitely all guy. Tana French was able to capture the emotional mess, uncommunicative, out-of-touch-with-your-own-feelings but still self-absorbed that some men do soooo well.
Well done mysteries and psychological thrillers have to be the toughest books to write. In the Woods kept me enthralled the entire time, and left me thinking about the story long after I finished. I can’t wait to get started on the second in this series,The Likeness

I'm enjoying it :) Books with child murder & abduction really aren't my thing, but this one focuses on the investigation & the dectives (so far!) rather than all of the icky details or the murderer. The writing is good & I like the protag, so it's a turning into a fast read :) Hope you enjoy it when you get it!
It sticks to the detection angle? Are you going to write a review or just rate it? I like detective novels as long as the gory details are left out, so I'm keen to read your final thoughts on this.
GN, I usually review what I've read, not just rate. This one does have gorey details, but so far they are not the focus of the book... but there is still plenty of mystery, so I expect more nastiness to surface as we discover more about the crimes.
