More Jane for the Austen Purist

Jane Austen (1775-1817) only wrote six novels. We desperately wish she’d written six more. What’s an Austen reader to do after reading Pride and Prejudice for the tenth time? The trend is sequels to the novels and chick lit about the modern woman finding her own Mr. Darcy, but many Austen fans don’t want to go there. We like our pride, our prejudice, our sense, and our sensibility unembellished and untainted. So here’s a list of books that will appeal to the Jane Austen purist. The books include titles that Jane read in her day, books by Jane's contemporaries, big hits that came after Jane, and books that are similar in style to the books that Jane wrote. After all, we must take Darcy’s advice: “And to all this she must yet add something more substantial, in the improvement of her mind by extensive reading” (Pride and Prejudice, Vol. I, Chap. viii).

message 1: by 3535 (new)

3535 I think that anyone who loves Austen would also like the novels of Barbara Pym. Some people claim that Anne Tyler is the modern Austen. I don't know about that; but I sure do love Tyler's novels and cannot imagine my life without her characters. Incicentally, Austen herself loved the fiction of Samuel Richardson, especially his Sir Charles Grandison.

message 2: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Whoever put Pride and Prejudice and Zombies on this list, which is intended for Austen purists, must have been on something. Something very, very bad.

message 3: by Meredith (new)

Meredith Seriously Goodreads should sort this out and allow the originator of the list to delete books added that don't match the prospectus. Soon no doubt there'll be people adding teen vampire books to this list.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Kali - is there anything you want me to remove?

message 5: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Yes, I totally agree with Elizabeth and Meredith in the comments above! Why would anyone add books that are distinctly spoken against in the description of this list!? Very unbecoming behavior indeed. Now one cannot "like" the list for it has been desecrated by chick lit. :( Props to the original creator of the list, I wish people had respected your guidelines when adding books.
