Brooklyn #5

Bombshells

Rate this book
The women's league is in the house! And Brooklyn will never be the same again for Anton Bayer and the team…

This is my last chance to ditch my playboy reputation and finally fulfill my potential. So I’ve made three rules for our biggest season yet: no boozing, no women, and no scandals.

Especially that last thing.

So who do I befriend on the very first day back at the rink? An amazing female hockey player. I want Sylvie in a way that’s more than just friendly. I crave her. But I have a championship to win, and so does she.

Then she gets her heart broken by my teammate, and I make the foolish mistake of comforting her in the best way I know how. Our night together sets off a string of sins.

Nobody can know about our affair, especially my overprotective teammate. I can’t let anyone see into my greedy little heart. Not even her.

The things I want from her, and the things we’ve already done? If anyone knew, there’d be bombshells.

Contains: a defenseman with dreamy blue eyes, a female goalie with bad ideas, a major battle of the sexes and a swimming pool scene...

“No other man has ever made me feel this way– like I'd walk through fire for just one more kiss.”

I always love reading Sarina Bowen's books and I especially love her hockey books. I was excited to get to this one because I couldn't wait to get to Anton's story, but also because I thought it was so cool that Sarina was adding in a professional female team as well. Bring on the Bombshells! I can't wait to read more about these ladies!

Sylive is a goalie for the new Brooklyn Bombshells team and she has a bit of a history with one of the players. Who happens to not be Anton. When Anton and Sylive meet, there is a definite spark, but Anton isn't sure about going there. He's trying to be on his best behavior this season, so getting serious with a woman isn't something he's looking to do. Plus, with a tie to another player, this could get complicated.

Even with all this, they can't seem to stay away from each other. These two have so much chemistry, and a really strong friendship to boot. I loved them together. Seeing Anton grow up and mature was great. I loved Sylvie too. This was all around such a fun and steamy romance. I also loved how Sarina put in the difference between male and female professional sports teams. I knew there was a huge gap, but this really put it in perspective.

It was great to see some of the other Brooklyn guys and I can't wait to read more. Now with the female players added in, there is so many more characters Bowen can write about!

Baby’s all grown up…

***4.5 stars***

It was an absolute pleasure reading Bombshells. There are not too many times that I finish a sports romance where I admire the hero for his maturity. In this case, Anton ‘Baby’ Bayer had made some bad decisions that left him red-faced and put his career in jeopardy. Anton decided to take a step back from his partying ways and get his life and career back on track. How cool is that? A hero who recognises his good fortune and decides to work hard to earn the exorbitant amount he makes. Anton sets himself some rules at the beginning of the season to make sure that he stays on track, no boozing, no women, and no scandals. But, some rules are meant to be broken.

Sylvie is a Bombshell and proud of it. When the opportunity to play for the Boston Bombshells ice hockey team arose, she has more than a couple of reasons to be excited. Firstly, she gets the chance to play her beloved sport. Secondly, this opportunity will hopefully lift her spirits a little after her mother’s sudden death. Thirdly, moving to Boston will bring her closer to the love of her life. Funny thing is, it’s not the love of her life who makes her heart flutter but his teammate with the Caribbean blue eyes.

The love story between Anton and Sylvie was perfectly paced, sweet and HOT. While readers may find themselves hesitating because of the potential love triangle, it was never an issue for me. I was convinced pretty early in the story that there was only one man for Sylvie. Unfortunately, it took Sylvie a wee bit longer to work it out though. 😉

I really enjoyed reading Bombshells and loved that it wasn’t just about his sports career. In this story, Sylvie’s sports career plays just as important a part as Anton’s. It blows my mind how much sports stars make but it’s even more shocking the gender pay gap. Sarina Bowen manages to highlight the injustice while also promoting ways that could have men’s teams helping to bridge the gap. Wishful thinking, but wouldn’t it be nice if gender equality were the norm, with skills, talent and effort by the players getting the reward, irrespective of gender.

The storyline was interesting, the characters were lovable, and the love story was believable. It was fantastic getting a chance to catch up with the Brooklyn gang again, and I feel a deep need to revisit Brooklynaire (my favourite) AGAIN. I absolutely love the Brooklyn Bruisers/Brooklyn series and Bombshells was an excellent addition to this collection. Fingers crossed Sarina Bowen has plans to treat us to a few more Bombshells finding love. A story where one very fiery Bombshell helps a Bruiser get his foot out of his mouth might be all right … pretty please.

"'But if you’re awake, I’d like to be, too. Wherever you are, that’s where I’d like to be.'"
YES! Sarina Bowen does it again for me! This is sweet, kind of slow-burn, with a hot, sometimes cheesy hockey defenseman and an awesome, strong hockey goalie. The fact that Anton and Sylvie are both players just added to the story for me.

"I’m ready for him to take me completely apart. And I doubt I’ll ever want to be put back together again."
Seriously, what's not to like about Anton? I love that he's cheesy and funny, I love his Frankenwords so much. I love how focused he is and how determined he is to turn his reputation around and show everyone he's serious about what he wants in life, moving away from some past bad decisions. He's not looking to get sidetracked, but Sylvie manages to distract him nonetheless.

"Breathless, she parks her forehead against mine, and I stare into those brown eyes. And at least for this moment I have everything I ever dreamed of."
Sylvie is one of those heroines I love. She's a total badass, she's confident, she's so sweet and loving. She is chasing her dreams, coming from Canada to play for the Brooklyn Bombshells. And while she is also coming to Brooklyn for other reasons, maybe fate had something in store for her all along.
I have to confess I did have some trouble connecting with Sylvie at times, but she got through to me eventually.

Let me start by saying I don't think this is a love triangle at all. Sylvie has been into someone else for a while, someone who's never given her a real chance, just enough to keep her pining for him simply because he can. Jerk.
But the fact that he's an asshole is not the reason this is NOT a love triangle. The truth is, once Anton's in the picture, it's like... there's really no one else there. Even though they're both overthinking it, and somehow fighting it, that's plain to see.
Anton and Sylvie are meant to be, Caribbean Sea eyes and all.

"No other man has ever made me feel this way—like I’d walk through fire for just one more kiss.
Their story was sweet, easygoing, and freaking steamy, of course. I love how they become friends while trying to ignore the attraction that's so obviously there, and how it slowly progresses. I was aware of every single thing happening, every moment, and I just wanted to push them together already!

"'You’re it for me. And I wouldn’t let a little thing like fate stand in the way.'"
This was a 5 star book for me because I'm all about what it makes me feel. This was a "feel good" book for me. I had a smile on my face for most of it, and I definitely had a happy face on at the end. It takes them a while to finally get there, but it's so worth it.

Don't believe what people say: sometimes it's really not about the road, but about the destination.

TITLE: BOMBSHELLS
AUTHOR: Sarina Bowen
SERIES: Brooklyn Bruisers #8
RELEASE DATE: April 13, 2021
GENRE: Contemporary Romance, Sports Romance
TROPES: Friends to Lovers
NARRATORS: Patrick Zeller, Desiree Ketchum
LENGTH: 8 hrs and 13 mins
RATING: 4.5 STARS
CLIFFHANGER: No

Sarina Bowen delivers reliably without failure. Pick any of her books and you'll have a good time. BOMBSHELLS, the next in the Brooklyn Bruisers series, introduces Rebecca Kattenberger's female team.

The first of the Bombshells who gets a happy ending is the team's goalie, Sylvie. Her match? Baby Bayer! Ahhhh they were perfection! Everything about them just worked. Anton Bayer needs to clean up his act, he's set on being a good teammate and determined to stay out of trouble. That's hard when you fall head over heels in lust with a gorgeous female hockey player though.
Sylvie being hired into the Bombshells feels like she's won the lottery. Her childhood friend and teenage crush plays on the Bruisers' team and she hopes that they can take their friendship to the next level. But then Baby Bayer, the trouble maker, slides into her life.

This installment introduces a whole bunch of new characters. I can see some HEAs already on the horizon. Especially Drake has caught my eager eye and I was happy to see that his book will be next! There is a a hint of supernatural in this story that I found adorable.

I had the chance to listen to the audiobook of BOMBSHELLS and was introduced to Patrick Zeller's narration. What can I say, I'm super impressed and hope more authors start booking him. He snuck right into my favorite narrators list. Together with Desiree Ketchum they make this one easy to listen to and engaging.

This is another winner by Sarina Bowen. It is cute, low-drama, sexy and irresistible friends to lovers story with humor to boot and two easy-going characters you can't help but root for. Can't wait for the next book!

* * * * 1/2 Spoiler Free-A Quick Review
I was overjoyed to know another Brooklyn Series was coming and we had an inkling it was going to be about the Women's Hockey team. How terrific and current is that. I would expect nothing less from Sarina Bowen and her ability to educate readers about all types of hockey and their players.

Side Note: Sarina Bowen never fails to use these types of tales to explain rules, salary caps, regulations, and the way the game is played. In this story, we get an inside look at how women's sport needs to be fixed and become more equal in treatment, salaries, and respect.

We got a sincere love story that revolved around two people devoted to hockey in a healthy way.
It was a straightforward tale in the way we understood who the people were and what the overall goal was, to play hockey for the Bruisers and the Bombshells. That Sophie and Anton have "A Moment, A Recognition" when they first come in contact with each other only added to they how they were meant to be.

The joke was Sophie thought her heart belonged to another, someone she had been pining for years. Her coming to Brooklyn to skate for the Bombshells was bringing her front and center to the man she thought was her future.

Anton, known as a player, had a "Come To Jesus Moment" this summer when he thought he would not be playing professional hockey if he didn't get his personal life together. He had experienced too many embarrassing incidents causing the concern of the coach and team management. He dedicated his summer to working out and getting his act together. No distractions, no women to ruin his focus on saving his position with the team.

What I love about this story was how both characters were strong and capable on the ice. Both worked to be that way and stayed focus on that. Both stayed true to who they were and in the end, everything fell into the place they needed it to. I really liked both characters.

If you love hockey, sport, and really strong storytelling then this is so for you.

I've learnt from my recent rookie school holiday mistakes and waited for the kids to crash before I picked this up. So now I'm just wickedly sleep deprived because no way could I put a Sarina Bowen book down. Especially since it feels like it's been forever since we have caught up with the Brooklyn Bruisers. And now we have the Bombshells, and I am so there for it.

I love the fact that we have added a women's team to the franchise. I can't wait until it's mainstream but for now I'll bask in the glow of the Bombshells. We have the same awesome characters we already know and love. Plus, some amazing women that I'm praying will all get their stories told.

However, let's focus on Sylvie and Anton. Baby Bayer has grown up and he is all man. From the second he caught sight of Sylvie I could feel the pheromones pouring off him. I loved that he had grown up and learnt from his mistakes and was taking his life seriously and trying to be the best version of himself.

Sylvie and her connection to her mum gave me all the feels. I loved every time she got another hairclip. It was such a small thing, but it just made me smile the whole way through. She was so self-aware and despite going into things with her mind set on one thing she wasn't afraid to look at it and reassess.

Together they were great, and I couldn't get enough of them. I absolutely love this series and I loved seeing the earlier couple’s relationship progression. And while I would normally be jumping up and down for the next book, I can be slightly chill about it thanks to all of the wonderful true north world books I have on my kindle. Ok nah I really need that next one. Please.

I’ve read this book too quickly because it was amazing.

I loved to see a professional women hockey team take form, and even if the unequal treatment between the women league and the men league is appalling I’m so proud of these women who keep their dreams and still enjoy to play this sport.

Anton Bayer decided that this is his season to shine. He won’t do anything to jeopardize his career once again, he will stay away from alcohol, women and scandals, but he couldn’t imagine to be bewitched by a beautiful woman on skates on his first day back at work with the Bruisers. When Sylvie Hansen got a call from the Bombshells asking her to become the second goalie of the team, she thought that was fate and maybe her late mother had a hand in it too. So she transferred from Canada to Brooklyn to play hockey and to finally live near her first love who plays for the Brooklyn Bruisers, but Bryce is still focused on his career, he is closed off with his personal life and he gives her mixed signals. Sylvie feels deluded and confused but fortunately she meets some great people in the new city and she easily becomes Anton’s friend. Will Anton keep his focus on his game or will he act on his attraction for the only woman he should stay away? Will Sylvie get over her love for Bryce or will she make him change his mind?

I liked Anton and Sylvie, they are funny, their friendship is so easy and comfortable, and they take care of each other really well.
I appreciated how this story never felt like a love triangle because I can’t stand those.
I didn’t like Bryce and all his confusing actions too much, I really wished Sylvie slapped him sometimes.

Thank you Sarina Bowen for bringing back my Love Bridger and other well known characters from previous books.

What are you doing still here? Please go get this book as soon as possible.

To say that I enjoyed this story would be an understatement of epic proportions. I can’t say that it was perfect because if I’m being honest, Sylvie could have figured out what we all figured out waaaaay early in the story, a bit faster lol, but a story is more than just its plot points. It’s an overall feeling you get when you read it. This story made me happy. Anton made me happy. Sylvie made me happy. The story had a mature tone to it from beginning to end. It was focused and well plotted. The story sparked in all the right places and the delicious chemistry between Sylvie and Anton was fantastic and ridiculously well written!

GAH … I have to tell you guys this thing that I thought I wasn’t going to mention but now that I’ve sat on it, I can’t not. I am obsessed with wishing Sylvie was the one on this cover! There, I said it. I know, it’s a Bruiser book, not a Bombshells book but daaaaaaaaammit, after reading the book and reading Sarina’s fantastic incorporation and blending of Sylvie’s hockey career and the ridiculous pay gap and everything else female athletes have to face that their male counterparts do not, I really want to see Sylvie on the cover of my book! #sorrynotsorry BTW, this is the only fault I have on this book and it’s not even a story fault! This is a sport romance with a love triangle, and not going to lie, I was scared of what was going to be the path the author was going to choose with the relationships 😬 But it turned out a sweet and light-hearted read with barely any drama.
And it was nice to also have the heroine be a hockey player, not only the hero.

AHHHH!! Anyone that knows me knows that Sarina Bowen and her Brooklyn Bruisers hockey series is probably the only sports romance series that I am consumed by. The Bruisers frankly are my heart's true love where sports romance is concerned. I am absolutely OBSESSED with the banter, locker room bromances and just the butterfly-inducing swoonfests that are her love stories!! Sylvie and Anton were no exception! I loved their story so so much!

That's it folks! Anton Bayer may be the Brooklyn Bruiser that has stolen my heart. I absolutely loved him and Sylvie together! He was just so delicious for words! I loved how vulnerable Bowen wrote him as he was on a quest to crush his third season with the Bruisers. But with one look at Sylvie and he was DONE. GAH!! His friendship and inevitable love story with Sylvie felt real and authentic and I for one was completely swept away by how raw and emotional this story was! Sylvie was just fantastic. The new Brooklyn Bombshells goalie was strong, assertive and perfect for Anton. I loved the connection she shared with him and how their chemistry sizzled right off the pages.

Overall, this was another fantastic Bruisers story to add to an altogether fabulous series!! I can't wait for more! 5 stars! ~Ratula

***

In a twist I wasn't expecting, it seems the only person I might love more than Anton Bayer? Sylvie Hansen.

Guh, you guys. Anton was this earnest, sweet, undeniably sexy hero. My favorite kind actually - the guy brought to his knees and knocked on his bumper by his feelings for the girl. He was a little bit goofy, fun, playful and sizzling hot. But in many ways, for me, it was Sylvie who stole the show.

I loved her perfect balance of strength, hope, and heart. I loved the fearless way she put herself out there, assertive and bold without ever crossing the line into desperation or making me feel embarrassed for her. I adored her. And I adored the way that Anton cared for her, rooted for her, and lifted her up. They were all spicy sweetness and I was insatiable for it.

Despite the fact that both Anton and Sylvie have some darkness/sadness in their past, the tone of this book was decidedly light-hearted. It's pretty low angst and low drama. The conflict mostly revolved around Anton getting his head straight, but there was nothing unnecessary about it. If you're worried about love triangle vibes (like I was, a little bit, at first) - the worry is unfounded. This was essentially a story of two wonderful people learning how to get out of their own way and accept the love that was being offered to them. And it was...lovely.

I felt like Bombshells was a little lighter on the bromance than the other Brooklyn Bruisers books. I missed my time spent watching the lovable lunks trade barbs. However in its place we got some pretty sweet sisterhood among Sylvie's Bombshells teammates. I loved getting to know their fiery personalities and fierce way they supported each other. I'm a big Bombshells fan and I can't wait to get more from both teams in the future! ~ Shelly, 4.5 Stars

4.5 Baby Bayer Stars!!

We know Baby Bayer from the other books in this series but in this book Anton Bayer is ready to get serious since this is his last chance to prove that he deserves to be on the Bruiser’s team. He is a funny guy and makes up the best words.

Sylvie Hansen is from Canada and she is on the new women’s hockey team, The Brooklyn Bombshells. She is also a close friend of Anton’s teammate Bryce.

This was a really different storyline and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The friendship between Sylvie and Anton was effortless and fun. The entire way their whole relationship evolved was organic and completely believable.

I’m not a fan of love triangles so the fact that this never really seemed like one completely worked for me.

There were also some characters in this book that I personally were not familiar with but that I could tell came from other books. I did a little bit of researching that and now have some more books added to my TBR.

This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life in Books.

I had a great time with this book! I admit that I am a huge fan of Sarina Bowen's work so I couldn't wait to dive into this book. There is just something about the way that this author tells a story that leaves me feeling all warm and gooey inside. This book was no exception. I was totally hooked by this romance and couldn't get enough of Anton and Sylvie.

Anton Bayer decides to clean up his act after having a rough season the previous year. He wants to focus on hockey and does not expect to meet anyone like Sylvie. Sylvie is playing on the women's hockey team, the Bombshells, which shares the same facility as the men's team. Sylvie always thought that she would end up with one of Anton's friends and teammates but they don't seem to be in sync for some reason. Before long, Anton is the one that she turns to when she needs a friend.

I liked Anton and Sylvie a lot. These two had fantastic chemistry with each other. I loved that they were both very dedicated to hockey and had that in common. They didn't jump into a relationship immediately although they were attracted to each other. I liked that they spent time with each other before jumping into anything else. I really felt like they were a perfect fit for each other and loved getting a chance to see them fall for each other.

Patrick Zeller and Desirée Ketchum did a fantastic job with the narration of this book. I did have a bit of a hiccup with the male narrator since I recently listened to another book where he voices a very unlikable character but once I realized what was going on, I was able to really settle into the story. I think that they both did a great job in bringing the characters to life and I loved the emotion that came through in their narration. I found myself listening to this book every free moment that I had and believe that their narration added to my overall enjoyment.

I would highly recommend this book to others. I really enjoyed going along with Sylvie and Anton as they found what they were looking for in each other. I cannot wait to read more of this talented author's work.

I received a digital review copy of this audiobook from the author/publicist.

Initial Thoughts

4.5 stars - rounding up for now!

So the moment this audiobook made its way to me, I had to start listening. Never mind the fact that I was already listening to something else. This book could not be ignored! Anton and Sylvie were both great characters and I loved the chemistry that they had with each other. I loved the fact that Sylvie played for the women's hockey team, the Bombshells, and that they had hockey in common. It was fun to see this pair figure out what they really wanted. I liked the narrators and thought that they only added to my enjoyment of the story.

Anton + Sylvie

We obviously all remember Baby Bayer!
Booze, pranks and women. Those were his true loves next to hockey these last couple years. But he has to concentrate on hockey only this season - or else!
Enter Sylvie.
She's a goalie for the new Brooklyn women's team.
And poor Anton is smitten at first sight.
But Sylvie has kinda been in love with one of his teammates since she was 15.

She's not available and he's not doing anything other than hockey this year. Should be easy, right?

LET THE FUN TIMES BEGIN! 😂

Such an adorable story!

I'm not really a hockey fan at all and this is double the hockey - but I just adore everything Sarina writes!
And just like all the other books in the Brooklyn world, this one was so sweet and fun and Brooklyn-ish and hockey-ish! I loved reading it.

I LOVED Anton and Sylvie.
She's so adorable and sweet.
And she always dreamed of her happy end with Bryce.
But now here's Anton and he's so nice and fun and hot and grr.
Just adorable!

What I didn't like ... the religious part. And the parts where Sylvie's dead mother 'leaves' her hairpins everywhere.
There was just too much of that for me. I hate religion. And I cannot have it in my books.
But I tried ignoring it because it's a Sarina book and it was so cute and funny.
And I really did love the story!

It was a great hockey romance!

Why hasn't Netflix knocked on Sarina's door yet??
Does it already have an amazingly funny and sexy Hockey Romance series? NO, it does not! There are only two ice-y things on Netflix and neither comes anywhere close to the Brooklyn amazingness!

The cover. Super hot guy. But ... Anton is a young blond cutie and not a 40-something almost-silver fox! 🤔

BOMBSHELLS was a super adorable + fun + sexy Hockey Romance! Run to your nearest amazon for your own Anton - this one is MINE!

...and now hurry March 2022 - I need Charli & Drake's book Shenanigans!

I will admit that I was a little nervous when I started Bombshells after reading the blurb and thinking there might be a possible love triangle. I'm happy to report that it's not like that at all. In fact, I have to hand it to Sarina Bowen for putting a great spin on the reformed manwhore/friends to lovers trope.

Anton was a giant puppy dog and I appreciated all his efforts to stay true to himself and his dreams. He doesn't always make the best decisions, but I felt his heart was always in the right place. He was so lovable and he had such great chemistry with Sylvie. I liked that though they found each other attractive right away, they took time to become friends and get to know each other. The slow burn friends to lovers is always a favorite for me. Plus, the wait was definitely worth it!

Sylvie (and all the Bombshells) were the highlight of the book though. I don't want to spoil anything, but there's a minor point in Sylvie's history that often plays a huge role/is a plot point in many other romances, but I love, love, love how Sarina Bowen made it a non-issue. I also loved the women's team and how they supported each other on and off the ice. I really appreciated how the challenges and prejudices surrounding women's sports (versus men's) was addressed as well. I'm hoping we'll see more novels featuring the Bombshells, and I'm especially intrigued by Charli and the heat I'm feeling between her and Drake ;)

I was fortunate to be able to both read and listen to this one, and I was beyond impressed by Patrick Zeller and Desiree Ketchum's performances. Both handled the accents and different characters easily and I really enjoyed their voices together. Patrick Zeller is a new to me narrator, but he gave such an emotional performance. I loved him as Anton and wow was he "enthusiastic" during those sexy times!;) I definitely recommend the audiobook!

3 1/2 "Bombshells" Stars!

I loved both Anton and Sylvie and I love Sarina Bowen stories. However I didn't love the trope for this one. There's kind of a love triangle. I don't like that nowadays. And there were secrets kept from friends and it related to the love triangle. It's hard to explain without giving the story away and this will probably just be a me thing. Plus, it works out perfectly. AND! I also loved how Sylvie's mom made herself know. Little "spiritual/magical" things like that always peek my interest in contemporary books.

I'm very excited about potential future books for the Bombshells. Those ladies have big personalities. Happy reading!

This was such an awesome read & listen!!!! This series is simply awesome and Sarina Bowen keeps bringing it with the great stories. This is absolutely one of the best friends to lovers stories I've read recently. I mean, a hottie male hockey player and a super funny and cute badass female hockey player, what else can you expect! In this new installment of the Brooklyn Bruisers books, we are introduced to the members of the Brooklyn Bombshells, the new women's hockey league team. If you are familiar with Sarina's books, you'll be pleasantly surprised by a certain cameo <3

This is Anton "Baby Bayer" story. He's been in a few other books, and I definitely have been waiting for his story. He's super funny and charming, and is trying really hard to save his reputation and to be more mature. All sorts of trouble for Anton ensues when he lays eyes on Sylvie. Anton is clearly attracted to her, but again he's trying really hard to save his reputation. So Anton and Sylvie become the best of friends, and one thing leads to another.

Like I said before, this was a fantastic friends to lovers story. Both Sylvie and Anton are great, likeable characters and the story will just keep you hooked from beginning to end. I can't wait to read more stories in this series, and I'm hoping for a story featuring a certain womanizer Bruiser and a certain ball-busting Bombshell! * wink wink

The audiobook is narrated by Patrick Zeller and Desireé Ketchum and it's just fantastic. Loved it! Absolutely recommend!

This was just okay for me.

Honestly, I was a little bit bored. This was a slow burn where I didn't really feel the chemistry, so it felt really drawn out.

Not my favorite one in the series.

This book is such a delightfully fun and sexy read and oh me, oh my, Anton Bayer and Sylvie Hansen sparkle with undeniable chemistry. Anton spent the previous Bruisers season on thin ice and needs to now prove he belongs on the team. Sylvie, now a part of the Brooklyn Bombshells is hoping that by sharing the city and the ice with her teen crush Bryce Campeau, the proximity will push his love for her over the edge, from a platonic, familial love, to that of great romance. But when she and Anton meet, she starts seeing signs that he belongs in her life.

Bowen is simply a master at creating traits in her characters that make them so real and endearing. Anton has an over the top personality and is hell-bent on keeping his life in order so that he plays his best season and keeps his job. He and Sylvie meet and the mutual attraction is very apparent. Meanwhile Sylvie waits for Bryce to see that fate or life circumstances have brought them together for a reason. He's oblivious of course, but Anton is not. As Sylvie and Anton begin spending time together as a part of an organizational volunteerism initiative, their comradery builds and the warm-fuzzies quickly escalate.

What I love about these characters is just how unabashed they are with each other. Their temperaments are well matched and I just adored them as individuals, but mostly when they come together. Bowen's trademark humor is front and center, with their banter and teasing reaching great heights. But there's also some very tender, swoon-worthy moments, on both their parts. I LOVE that the Brooklyn Bruisers now have a sister hockey team with the Bombshells and it's such a joy to spend a few hours in their world. 5 Stars and my recommendation.

Bombshells is hockey romance at its finest. It has everything you want in a sports romance, and nobody writes hockey romance the way Sarina Bowen does. It’s her super power. And with the introduction of Bombshells, Brooklyn’s women’s pro hockey team, she took her game to another level. Bombshells is simply unputdownable.

‘I really hadn’t anticipated that my brain could be stolen by the goalie on day one.’

Bombshells is Anton Bayer’s story. He’s a charming, fun-loving guy who’s determined to make some changes in his life to focus on his hockey career. His only goal is to prove to his coach, and himself, that he can fulfill his potential. But he wasn’t counting on the Bombshells’ goalie to detonate his plan.

‘No other man has ever made me feel this way—like I’d walk through fire for just one more kiss.’

Sylvie’s dream of playing hockey professionally came true out of the blue. She packed her things and moved to Brooklyn from Toronto with little time to make any plans. But living in Brooklyn would give her the chance to finally be with the guy she had always thought was “the one”, Bryce Campeau, Anton’s friend and teammate. Except things didn’t go the way she expected.

There’s a lot to love about Bombshells. The writing is fantastic—as always, the story flows and progresses perfectly, and the characters are lovable, three dimensional and relatable. Both Anton and Sylvie are the kind of people you want to be friends with. All the Bruisers are. There is a small town vibe in the way the Bruisers are like a close-knit family. You also get to meet a few of the Bombshells players to make things interesting for the future. The potential is endless and really exciting.

I really loved the way the story evolves. It works perfectly as a standalone, and the progression is exactly right. The way Anton and Sylvie’s friendship grows and becomes something else is delicious. Their banter, the tension, the emotional turmoil, the longing... it is extremely well done and so addictive. There is very little angst but there are emotional aspects that give the story, and the characters, depth and intensity. And there is nothing to worry if you don’t like love triangles because this one is definitely not that kind of triangle. It’s actually extremely well done and very original in my opinion.

‘In my whole life I’ve never gotten turned on by somebody’s hockey skills. But I guess there’s a first time for everything.’

Bombshells is intensely hockey-y. I know nothing about hockey, but the way Sarina Bowen describes it brings it to life in my mind. The action on the ice gives the story an edge that complements the action off the ice. It’s perfectly balanced. Then there’s the whole women’s sports aspect that is discussed in the book, and it makes the point of how insanely difficult it is for women to be professional athletes in a very organic way. I loved seeing a woman shine in this book as an athlete, specially as a hockey player. It’s simply outstanding.

I just couldn't get into this. There's a lot of good stuff going on in the story, and it's got that classic sports romance vibe, but the whole situation with the other guy rubbed me the wrong way. Essentially, the guy that our heroine always thought she'd end up with is in the picture until... uh, very late in the story. Not really in a "love triangle" kind of way, but more in an "interfering just enough to make things feel icky" way. That made it difficult to root for our couple, and I can't say that I felt the connection. It's still a quick, sexy read, but it never really won me over.

The story follows Anton and Sylvie, two hockey players. Anton's career is in jeopardy after one too many scandals, so he's trying to lay low and stay out of trouble this year. Unfortunately for him, there's a new women's hockey team in town, and one of the players catches his eye immediately. Anton feels definite instalust for Sylvie, but she's too caught up in her complicated connection to his teammate, Bryce, to realize it. Bryce has been stringing Sylvie along for way too long, and she's not ready to give up hope that he'll finally be ready to cross the line from friends to lovers. But as Sylvie and Anton spend more time together, her focus slowly starts to shift to him.

I love a good sports romance, so I was really looking forward to this. I just think there was too much going on, so it never felt "romantic" to me. Anton is Sylvie's second choice, and it felt like she was using the manhoe at times - she literally shifts her focus from one guy to the other within the same chapter. And for a commitment-phobic guy who is determined to stay out of trouble, Anton doesn't spend much time resisting. The story didn't slow down enough for us to get those quieter moments; Anton's playboy past, Sylvie's inexperience, their growing feelings - those are all glossed over. Add in the drama with Bryce, and it was a lot for one book. The foundation of a great love story is here and the writing style is solid, but this loses points on execution. With a few changes, I probably would've really enjoyed this, but it's ultimately a forgettable read for me. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this forbidden sports romance.

I loved this from the first word. I love that the title is referring to a women's ice hockey team.
I was all in for this book. I love Anton and Sylvie's first meeting. I guess it's a meet cute. Their inner monologues reveal strong attraction. Sylvie has been around hockey her whole life. She's had a crush on a family friend who happens to be Anton's teammate, Bryce.
This is no love triangle. Anton is determined to change his womanizing ways. He vows to take his hockey career seriously.
I loved the narration: perfectly cast: Desiree Ketcham and Patrick Zeller.
This one that I will be rereading and listening to over and over again.
There are cameos by characters from other books, but this can be a standalone.
I received an ALC arc but I would have found a way to get my hands and ears on this

Bombshells introduces the women's hockey team (aka Bombshells) and finally gives us Baby Bayer's HEA! I have loved Anton (Baby Bayer) since his intro in the series-he was the young, foolish rogue of a teammate.

Anton has decided it's time to clean up his act so he is going to focus on hockey this season and less on booze and women. Of course, this becomes impossible when he hooks up with Sylvie!

Ok, first let me talk about the "love triangle". I loathe that, but Bombshells isn't a love triangle. Yes, Sylvie was in love with someone, but it is over when she gets together with Anton. Her feelings were confused, but Anton was it for her. Anton also has to confront his playboy past and accept that Sylvie might just be his "one". Sylvie's budding sports career is everything she has worked for, so I really loved seeing her achieve her dreams. I also loved that Bowen doesn't shy away from highlighting the pay gap between women and men. Finally, seeing Anton mature a bit was sweet.

The Bombshells team also shows positive female friendships, which is so important. These women are professional athletes who support one another. They are not catty or backstabbing. We need more positive representation of women and Bombshells delivers that in multiple ways!

Trope: professional athletes, playboy finds the one

other sports romances like those written by Sara Ney, Kristen Callihan, K. Bromberg...then you will probably like Bombshells!

I’ve been in a little bit of a book funk lately and let me tell you, Bombshells was the perfect book to blast that funk right out!! I have been a fan of Sarina Bowen’s books for years, but this is one of my favorite of all her hockey books.

Bombshells introduces the female hockey team in Brooklyn. I can already tell we are going to have some great stories from these ladies. But in this one Sylvie, the backup goalie takes center stage. I enjoyed Sylvie a lot.

Now let’s talk about Anton “Baby Bayer”. Hooo wee. Talk about fire. But he’s not just a pretty face. He’s turning his life around trying to get serious so he doesn’t throw his career away with his partying ways. There’s a lot more depth and vulnerability to Anton than I expected. And he’s totally gone for Sylvie and super sweet. I loved them together!

This is a great read with a nice balance of hockey and their relationship. I highly recommend!

Audiobook Review

Sarina Bowen delivers another hit in her long-running Brooklyn Bruisers/Brooklyn series. Bombshells spins something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue into a delightful sports romance.

Something old: Eight or so standalone stories into the series and I’m still in love with my Brooklyn Bruisers pro hockey team. What a colorful cast of characters. Their significant others are just as wonderful—if not more—and I was happy to steal another moment with them. We met Anton Bayer aka “Baby Bayer” in Sure Shot, and I respect the mature man he has become.

Something new: The women are in the clubhouse! Rebecca Kattenberger is the proud new owner of the Brooklyn Bombshells, a professional women’s hockey team. The changes it brings to the Bruisers organization are eye-opening and humorous—from the pay disparity between the men’s and women’s leagues to the men’s reactions to boutique shower gel in their locker room. Sylvie is a goalie for the Bombshells and an all-around gem.

Something borrowed: There are echoes of the well-known best friend’s sister trope used here, but leave it to Sarina Bowen to put a spin on it. Anton has vowed to make hockey his sole focus this season after earning a reputation the previous year for partying and womanizing. His attraction to Sylvie is an unexpected complication, especially since she is like a sister to Anton’s teammate, Bryce Campo, and therefore off limits. Or does Bryce have romantic feelings for Sylvie himself? Whether it’s a love triangle or a forbidden romance or both, I’ll let you figure out.

Something blue: Sylvie is still mourning the loss of her mother. I enjoyed the creative way her mom’s presence is felt throughout the story.

The progression of the romance between Anton and Sylvie is sweet, hot, and simply wonderful. I also appreciated the Bombshells side of the story. I liked getting to know the women, seeing them bond as a new team, and the way Sylvie fights to keep her position. This book is highly entertaining, and I hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of the Bombshells.

About the audiobook:
The Bombshells audiobook is phenomenal. I'm unfamiliar with Patrick Zeller's previous work, but I haven't been this impressed by a vocal performance in a long time. He gives a distinct voice to each character, and the words are delivered with great emotion. I’m no expert in accents, but my one complaint is that his French accent sounds Russian/Spanish to me at times. Desireé Ketchum is a new-to-me narrator as well, and she is flawlessly expressive. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook.

4 STARS

I really enjoyed this story for two main reasons, the chemistry of the couple and the Bombshells.

Sarina Bowen's commentary on the treatment of female athletes to male athletes was wonderful. The one was not preachy but objective, calling light to the inequities between the professional athletes, but she also showed a group of ladies who were friends, cheering each other on, chasing their dreams together. I really lived for the moments when the team members were together.

Anton and Sylvie just had that magical chemistry. They were so much fun to read about, seeing them interact had me smiling from ear to ear. They had the emotional chemistry, the hilarious moments, and the much needed physical chemistry as well.

With many of Sarina's books, the conflict is often lacking for me. While this conflict is expected based on the character and plot development, it fizzles pretty quickly and is resolved with little to no real hardship on behalf of the characters. Personally, I like a bit more conflict and angst to go along with my romances. Everything else about this storyline, from pacing to development, is spot on, providing a fun and steamy hockey romance.

The Brooklyn Bruisers is one of my very favorite hockey romance worlds, and the addition of the Bombshells female hockey team added a new layer to this world I didn't know I needed. I hope we continue to see more of them in this world.

**I enjoyed the audiobook. The narrators were good, but the accent of one of the characters was not my favorite.

Baby Bayer is adorable and I want one for myself.

But I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that I can't really recall Anton from the previous books! Don't let him hear that though, I wouldn't want him getting a complex or anything.

Not only were Anton and Sylvie really cute together, their chemistry was hot.
But I appreciated how concerned Anton was with stepping on Bryce's toes, and that he was willing to move himself into the friend zone because he didn't want to get in the middle of whatever Bryce and Sylvie had going on.
I liked how, once Sylvie set her mind to things, she just went for it with Anton. After some slight hesitation on his part, and reflecting on what he wanted from his season, Anton was fully on board. I was initially worried there might be a bit of a love triangle feel to the story, considering Sylvie's history with Bryce, but that was never the case.

Bombshells was another entertaining read from Sarina Bowen. I love the addition of the women's hockey team and how the seasons are going to run parallel. I'm excited to read stories for the other Bombshell players, and to see the interactions between both teams.

A cute romance with relatively low angst, friends to lovers, and two pro hockey players. Female goalie and male defenseman.

I've liked Baby Bayer since he was first introduced, so once I found out he was going to be paired with a woman from the new Brooklyn women's hockey team I was super excited. I was less enthused, however, when I discovered this had a pining after someone else storyline and OM drama for almost the entire book. It wasn't OTT and only slightly veered into love triangle territory, but I got tired of talking about Bryce (the OM and Anton's teammate) all the time.

There was some family drama, particularly Anton's struggles regarding feeling like a second choice in many aspects of his life and Sylvie's continuing grief over her mother's death. I appreciated the depth this gave to the characters but I still wanted to know more about them as people. There are a ton of supporting characters so I would recommend reading the series in order tbh, but you could probably read as a standalone if not knowing the relationships between characters won't bother you.

Overall, I enjoyed the book but the amount of focus on Bryce brought my rating down.

An extremely generous 3 stars.

What I wouldn't give for Sarina Bowen to speak to LITERALLY one French person. Just one. Ever. And then actually understand how they speak English. She made a choice early on that Campeau didn't know past tense in English, apparently, except then she only applied that like 50% of the time. BUT THEN, he knew random idiomatic phrases and expressions in English that definitely don't come natural to an English language learner, while apparently only being capable of speaking in present (and 'will'-future) tense? Just truly, truly bizarre and extremely aggravating to read over and over again. It took me out of the story every time and was just one bananas choice after the other. Also, when he and Sylvie spoke French, that French was so rudimentary that it read as if two elementary school students were speaking to each other. In such cases, please, please, just find a French person to help you out.

But this book wasn't about Campeau (who was pretty annoying even outside of the language stuff anyway), which is where the 3 stars actually come in. I thought Sylvie and Anton (Baby Bayer) were very charming and sweet. I appreciated that this book didn't actually have Big Drama as the central conflict, and the story was just about them figuring out if and how they worked together. And yet, I still found something lacking in the romance that I still can't quite pinpoint. I just thought they were nice but never got anything more out of it, and never found myself itching to get back to the story, like I usually do when reading Sarina Bowen's books. But I did enjoy their arc in general.

Overall, I think the scenes of them teaching those kids to swim were probably my favorite of the whole book, and I really enjoyed meeting some of the other Brooklyn Bombshells. I just really like this world and this group of people, so I'll definitely keep reading it for as long as Sarina Bowen puts out books, even though this was decidedly my least favorite of the Brooklyn Bruisers books so far.

This was an enjoyable slow burn romance. Sylvie thought she was in love with her childhood best friend, but it was not precipitated and along came his team mate Anton. Chemistry was great between these two, but it was a very slow romance. It was more about the sport than the romance, but it was still entertaining.
