Twisted

Rate this book
The new world is small and dark.
Ruthless men rule in this new world. Violent men. Twisted men.
Men like Baron. A monster in a metal mask. A self-made king in his own kingdom, his notorious cruelty is only overshadowed by his madness.
I caught his eye while dancing for my life. He saved me -- and now he owns me. Utterly.
He dresses me. Possesses me. Watches me while I sleep.
I sit on his knee while he plays with me.
I watch the wicked things he does to others while he whispers in my ear how precious I am.
I'm the perfect, painted little doll, forced to play my part in his grand schemes. His sick fantasies. His new world that he is building.
But his lust becomes obsession, obsession becomes devotion, devotion becomes dedication, and with dedication comes... power.
My name is Sapphire, and I'm a good girl. This is the story of how I tried to control a psychopath, and how he tried to make me as twisted as him.

Author No part of Baron is a hero. He's a cross between the mad hatter, the goblin king, and a mafia boss. He has no limits, and he lives for... triggers. If you don't like dark romance -- and I mean dark romance -- please don't read this book.

Previously published as The Carnival's Daughter (part of The Kingdom duet) this book has been extended to include Kingdom's Son and now forms book 1 of a new series.

Esme is a Scottish romance author who writes books about demanding and possessive alpha-heros. Or anti-heros, when the mood takes her. They're usually gruff and hard, but that is until they meet the women who bring them to their knees.

In her spare time Esme writes sci-fi romance and sometimes remembers to eat. She's a mum of two very fiesty heroines and a wolf-hybrid, and she lives with her very own highlander-husband who she is trying to convince to do her audiobooks ;-)

If I'm being honest, the first 40% of the book didn't make much sense... All those games that adult men indulged themselves with seemed pretty pointless, stupid and weird rather than twisted, given that women have become "a rare commodity" in this kind of post-apocalyptic world created by the author.
As far as the last 60% of the book is concerned... I guess I opted for not trying to understand the logic behind the story anymore. If I wanted serious food for thought, I would choose another genre to read, after all.

From my perspective, this book is extremely tame for a dark romance the author claims it to be. Something I'd recommend for neophytes who saw nothing yet😂. But I can be wrong as people are so easily triggered and flabbergasted by fiction these days.

Though Baron aka the (anti) hero of this story is probably the sanest male character in the whole story but people are seriously saying he is twisted??? The fact that this mysterious guy is obsessed with only two things in the world ( a mask on his face and the heroine, lol)... Ain't that sweet?

But on a serious note, the relationship between the main leads is unconventional to say the least but I felt like there was more talk of Baron (what a name) being twisted/insane/evil/mad/psychotic than him actually playing that card. In my humble opinion, of course.
He cared very much about his Sapphire and was endearingly protective of her.
His POV made me believe he is a perfectly normal person who just embraced wholeheartedly all the madness and chaos ruling over the world.

I read the previous edition under different title and I have to say this one was so much better! In the previous one I felt frustrated that I didn’t feel like I knew Baron at all and because of that I couldn’t feel any connection with him. In this longer expanded version I definitely felt that connection and all though I still don’t really understand him I learnt enough that I could feel myself drawn to him more than before. I liked Sapphire a lot but I do agree with Baron she is a little judgemental without knowing people or situations properly. I think considering everything she was strong and held her own which I really liked. I really enjoyed this expanded version and I can’t wait for next one!

* I lowered my rating because I'm doing a dystopian binge and I was a little bit too generous with this one 😙*

Mmm..I'm developing quite a taste for dystopian books

description

Lol.

Anyway I was in a mood for something really dark and twisted.. This book delivered.
It kept me entertained and was a page turner.

What to expect:

➸ dystopian world, not safe for women.
➸ Masked psychotic Hero. Imagine a cross between the joker and the mad hatter
➸ Innocent, naive but resilient heroine. Sometimes she annoyed me but she wasn’t a pushover and no betraying body syndrome..I really appreciated it.
➸ captive-captor trope with Stockholm vibes
➸ toxic relationship filled with insane obsession and unhealthy jealousy

Why not an higher rating
➸ Miscommunication. I don’t like this trope.
➸ World building is weak. We don’t get many information until 50-60% and I was a little bit confused. At the end of the book we still have only a vague idea of this dystopian world.
➸ Hero was really "nice" (too nice if you ask me) with h for 60% and then, out of the blue, he snapped. I just prefer a different character arc in this type of books.
➸ I wouldn't call this a dark romance (romance needs development, hopefully this will happen in the second book), more dark erotica for now.

Definitely not for everyone. Recommended only if you're looking for something dark.
Triggers for dub-con (pretty heavy, many scene are more nonCon if you ask me)
Graphic violence. No cheating. No Cliffy,"HFN" (book #2 is confirmed)
Blurb doesn't report it but this isn't a Standalone (Series, 3 books confirmed on author reader group) and was previously published as The Carnival's Daughter (twisted is the updated and extended edition).

This book book takes place in a post Apocalyptic setting. The H is a mysterious crazy man who always has a mask on. He seriously gave me Mad Hatter vibes. He’s a little mad in the head. This book made me uncomfortable but I could not stop reading. I wanted these characters to become one so bad. So many unanswered questions playing trick on my mind right now. I don’t think I’ve ever needed the seconded book in my life so bad! It’s just so captivating trying to wrap your mind around everything that is going on. I don’t want to give to much away. You should go in blind. I was so into this book that I stayed up half the night to finish it! I love Esme Devlin writing style. She does dance on the line of crazy, dark, and kinky. Her heroes give ME Stockholm Syndrome. I’m completely captivated by their cruel ways and also at the ability they show compassion. I love that’s they’re all a little sick and twisted.

A pleasant surprise, with a sweet, naive heroine, yet not frustrating, and a well portrayed anti hero, whose only weakness was the heroine (my favorites!). A dark romance but a little tame for me.
I'll definitely be following this author's work.

I think this will get better (based on reviews) but this is odd and I’m confused by the lack of worldbuilding… and it’s 500+ pages… and I just noticed there’s going to be 2 other books, and I’m not enjoying myself that much.

The book takes place in some future dystopian world. So far, I can’t get a hold of it. The H has little reference on what a carnival is but knows what a circus tent is. He has clients come in from China, but they’re using lanterns and having issues with the power grid. I believe some disease killed most the females but sounds like the few remaining are abused and mistreated.

The H wears a creepy mask, I’m not sure what he really does… or why he wears it. We’re told he’s super crazy, but he hasn’t done anything really psycho. The h is naive and sheltered which isn’t my favorite couple type. I like my unhinged male to have an equally insane female for a partner. We're also told she's really special but not why.

Bottom Line- I believe this will pick up towards the end, but I like to know where I’m going… or at least understand where I am, and I’m lost. I get trying to be mysterious, but the ambiguous riddles are getting old… and I know I don’t have the patience to see three books through, so I’m stopping here.

I've DNF'd at least two Esme Devlin books. Just straight given up before reaching 15%, and not added them to GR because I felt bad about it. In fact, I'm pretty sure I started and abandoned The Carnival's Daughter, the previously published version of this book. I don't know if the text has been rewritten/edited or if the holidays are making me feel extra charitable, but I actually enjoyed Twisted.

Devlin isn't a great writer, but she does seem to be improving, and that is a wonderful thing. Compared to The Kiss Game, the language here is more "writerly" (or at least less casual). The storytelling flows better due to the varied sentence structure. The prose is enhanced with descriptive details—though I would like to see the author work towards a more stylistic voice (perhaps by better employing figurative and euphonic/cacophonic language). My one major pet peeve is that she relies too much on repetitive single-sentence paragraphs, which cheapens a device usually meant for emphasis and suspense, causing otherwise impactful content to read as choppy and monotonous. Rina Kent does this, and Esme Devlin: You are a much better writer than Rina Kent.

I also don't know why the author felt the need to include the "I didn't write this book to be commercially successful" disclaimer at the beginning, because these types of books often are and I'm sure she knows it. It ends up implying that she did write her other books to be commercially successful, perhaps as opposed to writing them because she felt passionate about telling those stories. In which case, it shows. Write what you love! There's no need to apologize for it. If Twisted is any indication, Devlin flourishes outside of a contemporary setting. I, for one, hope we see her abandon trendy genres in favor of her own worlds.

In terms of dark romance, I wouldn't necessarily classify this book as pitch black. It's certainly marketing nonsense to say the (anti-)hero "has no limits." Sure, he plays mind-games with the main female character, but he won't have sex with her until she's fucked in the head enough to want it (despite his confidence that she would have forgiven him for deflowering her on their first night together). He threatens to beat her and ties her to a bed when she disobeys him publicly, but then claims it's a pretense so other people don't think she's "special" to him (uh, I think the fact that you force her to wear full-face makeup, won't let anyone look at her, gave her a room separate from the rest of the women, keep her in your lap while sitting on your throne, etc. kind of gave it away, buddy).

The raw material for a great book is here, but it falls short on execution. That's not to say it isn't an entertaining book—just that it is flawed. There is way too much fan service to dark romance tropes without clearly communicating the why. For example, it makes use of the magical, mystical "there's just something special about her" cliché, when it didn't have to. Baron could have been intrigued enough by Sapphire's lack of abuse to want to buy her "as is" (i.e. still a virgin), terrorized her because it arouses him (as opposed to terrorizing her because she arouses him), only to become increasingly fixated on her (as a person) as she learns to play his games. He could have been possessive of her as something he owned and isolated her because that's how you condition a living thing to act/think/feel the way you want them to, instead of being irrationally and immediately obsessed with her (because emotions). Believability! Intrigue! Tension!

Unfortunately, Delvin gives away too much at the beginning that she ends up undermining character and relationship development throughout the rest of the book. The highs aren't high enough and the lows aren't low enough (they also don't last long enough). The relationship between Baron and Sapphire often relies on dialog and internal monologue. I (as the reader) want to feel the fear Baron is always banging on about. I want his POV to manipulate and toy with me in the same way he does Sapphire. Instead, within the first few chapters there is a very sudden turn of events for Sapphire, before we switch to Baron and he's like "lol jk I'm just manipulating people, see how much of an evil genius I am?"

What different people get out of treating someone the way Baron does Sapphire, and what different people feel while they are being treated that way is more complex than it appears. The actions and end result of someone who—for example—desires obedience from another person versus someone who wants to objectify/dehumanize them can often look the same; it's the intention and motivation that really matters. When you're writing this kind of work, it can be tricky keep these things clear and not fall into your own trap where anything could be somewhat reasonably explained or justified. You need that nuance, otherwise you end up muddying the waters. Twisted did not do this as effectively as I would have liked.

The ideas are there. I am so here for a man who is bad because he wants to be and develops an emotional attachment to a woman without completely losing his mind and his personality over her. I am so here for a romance novel that explores the myriad of different ways two people can have an intense psychological connection without calling it love. But, what we end up with is neither of those things (and it's not what's advertised, either). Baron is a character whose desire to be feared and in control is a performance; it's a product of his environment (and his childhood, as revealed later on).

As a result, the majority of the book feels like Baron is trying to convince the reader that he's a terrible but brilliant man, when it's obvious he's operating from a place of past trauma and learned self-defense. The fact that he (conveniently) freaks the fuck out when the captive that he doesn't trust and who doesn't trust him does something that is completely expected and understandable given the circumstances underscores this. When push comes to shove, he's not the master of his own emotions and he does not have the coping mechanisms to prevent them from overriding his analytical thinking skills. Pair that with the cheap "he's not as bad as he pretends to be" redemption arc foreshadowing, and the really depraved bits of this book are... basically one giant man tantrum.

Not the most "alpha" behavior I've ever encountered, but I'll still read the second book.

Edit: The top Amazon review of this book claims that the author has been "forced" to make changes for a more mainstream appeal, and I agree with that person's sentiment: DON'T DO IT! There are way too many authors riding the coattails of the very few who have managed to make a noticeable impact on the genre, pandering to an audience that has depressingly low standards. Crafting a unique voice in an oversaturated market that is—and I'm being generous here—85% trash is always going to be the better option for your readers and your integrity.

Your customer base may start small, but they will be dedicated and loyal. They will root for your career and hype your work up in a way cursory readers never will. They will engage with you. Fuck the unwashed masses—their fickle FOMO will pressure them into reading your books eventually.

With a little work and a lot of artistic support, Esme Devlin could be a phenomenal storyteller. It would be a heartbreaking waste of potential to see her succumb to whatever forces are trying to mold her into just another dime-a-dozen writer. So, no. Despite what may seen like harsh criticism above, I'm a fan.

This is the first book I have read from this author so I wasn't sure what to expect. Finding a book that actually fits into what I believe a dark romance should be is pretty difficult and not for the faint of heart, but this story delivered in spades.

This world is dark and gritty with little thought on holding back our characters experiences. A world ravaged by a "curse" that we are given a few brief but very enlightening history lessons on. We have damaged, ruthless men who gamble with womens lives as if they were nothing more than dolls, bought and traded on a whim to the highest or most lethal bidder. And at the very center we have two very different people, constantly suspended in misunderstandings, power struggles, and most importantly, fear.

I loved this book. It is a ride that once started I could not stop. Baron is handsomely written, and Sapphire is innocent and naive without the annoying damsel in distress overtone many leading ladies have. I can not wait to get my hands on book 2.

Twisted is a dark post-apocalyptic romance by Esme Devlin. I absolutely love dark romance done right and Ms. Devlin hit all the right buttons! Twisted is a spellbinding blend of a unique and macabre post-apocalyptic world and an unlikely love story. While I really enjoyed Saphore's blend of naivete and strength, Baron is the character that ruled my heart. What an amazingly mysterious, dark and complicated anti-hero! I loved the relentless build-up and the slow unraveling of the mystery of this new world and the man himself. I look forward to seeing where Esme takes these characters in book two!

I read this book under the old title. I do miss the original cover for the book but I do understand why it was changed.

This book is dark and bloody and sexy is a good mind screw. I’m looking forward to the next part to be able to finish the story.

What I don’t like (and this is nothing against the author) is when readers sit down to a Dark romance book and then complain that it’s “too” dark. What did you expect? Rainbows and kittens? And then to terrorize this amazing author into toning down her work because you really don’t want a “dark” romance but some joe blow happy ever after.

This is probably one of the more twisted books I’ve read. But I still miss the original title and cover.

Talk about a dark and gripping romance!

Twisted is one of those books that are best read blind. This isn’t my first Esme Rae Devlin read, and one thing I can say about this author is that her books get keep getting better and better which each new release. Baron and Sapphire took us on one hell of a ride, and I’m so glad there’s more to come. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next instalment of this series!

I get that the author wanted to make the H mysterious but there is a limit to how much a reader will tolerate a character that speaks in riddles. I was frequently frustrated with how little was explained or answered. To be honest, I am still not sure why the H wears a mask and am pretty certain that what made the h special, according to Maxim, was never revealed. The h was also difficult to like; her response after almost being gang-raped is to complain about where she will sleep that night. The story wasn't fun or very engaging.

Oh. I LOOOOVED what I just read!
Imagine a dystopian Wonderland of crazy set in a somewhat Mad Max-like environment where areas are brutally controlled by a War Lord type leader. Imagine you are one of the only naive women (Sapphire ~ h) in this place & you are 'owned' by a man that runs a Circus which sells women: for a few hours to enjoy them or to purchase them outright. You're a virgin & therefore your current 'owner' has you on/for sale but for an astoundingly exorbitant price that no one is able to afford. But then you catch the attention of the insane & brutal Leader (Baron ~ anti-H) of your area. And he wants you. At any cost . . . .
This one is a written mural of crazy, lust, innocence, love, hope, despair, shock, violence, danger, suspense . . . . The list of things this one is is varied & sometimes these things are 100% contrary to each other. It seemed to me the heroine was standing in a huge luxuriously appointed ballroom while people & colors & sounds spin with dizzy speed around, above & below her. Too fast to comprehend what ANY of them were or meant, merely blobs & blurs that made her anxious & dizzy.
For me, this one was like a juggler lobbing a LOT of balls so fast they were blurs. And that seems like the book would be a jumbled mess, right?
WRONG.
Ms. Devlin has a unique gift of craftsmanship; what in another's hands might have been a jumble, a mess, in her hands is a perfectly balanced journey. Chaotic? Yes. Crazy? Yes. Thrilling? Oh, yes.
The reader is relentlessly pulled deeper & deeper into the Black Hole known as Baron along with a naive, unexperienced trusting heroine. And the deeper we're pulled into this hole, the faster we're swirled, twisted, flung about, confused. But it's a wonderfully paced, plotted, thrilling ride we are invested in, mesmerized by, shocked with, enthralled by, one we do not want to leave.
Sapphire, while naive & innocent, is highly intelligent & intuitive. While her intelligence was lightly used while at the Circus, she swiftly realizes to preserve her life & perhaps her sanity once Baron 'owns' her, she increasingly discovers her ability to not only intuit Baron's moods & whims, but to stretch her intelligence further than she's ever done previously. And while she internally exposes her fears & terrors, her hurts & angers, her worries & hopes to the reader, she is never weak or pitiful. She may be unsure of her footing but is never unsure of wanting to survive Baron & his chaotic wants, needs & desires whether he expresses them or not. And her dance of wits & wills with Baron continuously increases speed while she hangs on for dear life.
And Baron is a wonderfully chaotic & mercurial anti-H who always wears a metal mask, we never truly know him or just exactly what created & carved his personality into the Baron in the book. The reader is given tiny peeks, deft subtle hints, a comment here & there from his longtime friend & 2nd in command as well as his formidable grandmother but we don't learn much until close to the end of the book. We don't even know what he looks like beyond the fact he is tall & muscular. He is violent, brutal, harsh, mercurial, but is he insane as everyone thinks? And we don't really know: Does he love Sapphire? Only lust for her? Want her as a trophy? A possession? A toy he will soon tire of & discard?
Again, this one is a deliciously chaotic & thrilling read. Wonderfully written, beautifully balanced, perfectly plotted with fascinating & complex characters a reader is enthralled with, care about & root for with their fingers crossed. Be brave & journey into this madly additive read that will hold you delightfully hostage from the first page to the last.
You will not regret it.
I didn't regret it.
At all.
In fact, I loved it.

*This review was originally posted for The Carnival's Daughter*

LOVED IT! The selling point of this story was not just the intrigue and enigma of the main hero Baron. It's the mind games that leaves you wondering and always seated on the edge, ready for something to hit you smack in your face. It's erotica based on sensuality and also intelligence. Nothing is sexier than a cunning, intelligent person.

BARON is a sadistic, almost dysfunctional character but I guess that's what made him so sexy, mysterious and downright intriguing. Of course, in real life if I ever met someone like that I'd run the other way FAST, but this is fiction so we can revel in him. Baron first caught sight of Sapphire, she was performing in the carnival and immediately there's this live-wire chemistry between them that wasn't based solely on lust. It was something more. I do admit the entire world lacked building, or if the author has more to share, she didn't. We just know that the world ended because of high tech birth control, and soon the females who took the pills can't give birth LOL. Frankly I don't really know what's happening in the outside world apart from what's going on between Baron and Sapphire. By hook or crook, Baron basically seized Sapphire from her Carnival master, taking her back home and played mind games with her, all because of his twisted, growing fascination for her. I would be lying if I said I didn't want to see the man behind the metal mask. Oh right, Baron wears a mask throughout the whole story, so we don't even know what he looks like and we don't even know his background story, which I hope will be enlightened in the next book.

SAPPHIRE is like a poor doll celebrating Dia de muertos everyday, since her job at the carnival requires her to paint her face into a skeleton. What's intriguing about her are her mismatched eyes, and also her resilience to mental games as you will know from her interaction with Baron. Yes, she's an innocent and a virgin, but perhaps those are her arsenal for dealing with a sadist like Baron. Sapphire endures his many rounds of mental abuse but he will never lay a single hand on her. She didn't go crazy from it, in fact it makes her more alive and aware, in order to beat Baron at his own games. It's their form of foreplay I guess and I loved the slow burn. There was only one sex scene, but I think it was awesome enough for now, since the sensuality has been building up to that moment. It wasn't SUPERNOVA explosive, but close.

OVERALL there are many unanswered questions to the story, and I can't wait for the next installment to be released. I really want to know more about the man behind Baron.

The title warned me.
The blurb warned me.
The author warned me.

Was I still determined to read this? Yes.

Did the warnings prove to be true? Yes.

This book is set in a dystopian future where children are scarce and women able to breed, even more so. Our Hero is a monster and our heroine is a pawn in a war where reality is foggy and nightmares are more real than dreams. This is part 1 in a series and the story continues as more information is revealed.

I don't think I can fully review this one without giving away key spoilers so I'll just keep this one short and simple. If you like damaged Heroes who are all kinds of rough and dirty - think Joker, with a softer/conflicting side- you will love Baron. He is the poster boy for dysfunctional and anti-hero. He honestly scared me at first, his psych is twisted and dark and from a place that is down right creepy. The more I read about him, the more intrigued I was but not romantically. That comes later! I hated and loved him in equal measure.

As for Sapphire, this girl is definitely put through the emotional ringer and she mostly stayed a mystery for me. I am definitely interested to read more about her especially with that twist at the end! I'm not completely convinced she isn't suffering from Stockholm Syndrome but I think I just need more page time with her. She puts up with a lot and I loved her stubbornness, she didn't bend easily and always held out hope. Do I want her to have a HEA? Hell yes! But in this setting, my idea of a HEA might not be for Sapphire and Baron. I'll be optimistic though :)

The author did an awesome job of making characters so unique that you can't help but be curious and want to know more. The world is also imaginative and pretty scary, imo.

This is definitely a dark read that was outside my comfort zone. I try to push past my boundaries every once in a while and Twisted gave me that rush of forbidden and taboo that I was looking for.

Safety info:

Ages: Sapphire is in her late teens early twenties and a virgin. Baron is in his early to late 30s.

I read the old version of this book and I was torn between loving it and hating it. I did not fully grasp the concept of the story then but I couldn't get it out of my head! I had been periodically checking up for the second book but then I didn't see the first book anymore. It wasn't until recently that I realized there was a different version. I figured I might as well get a new outlook on it. Hm... Best decision ever! This version is extended and tweaked a bit, but it clears everything up that had me confused before. I absolutely loved it!!

This story takes you to a whole new world! It's a dystopia all on its own. The story takes you on a crazy journey through pain, naivety, brokenness, torture, and illusion. There may or may not be a trail of bread crumbs leading to romance...
Sapphire is the luckiest-unluckiest girl to exist. What she thought as a safe haven turned out to be full of nightmares. Not all is as it seems. Sometimes what lies behind a curtain is worse than what lies behind a mask.
Baron is..he's something else. An enigma, I guess you can say. He is the reaper, but is the reaper the one above all others? This one holds his secrets like the universe holds its stars.

I admit the original cover from the last version was so much better than this one. The cover almost had me not wanted to pick up this version but, honestly, the story is well worth it! It's definitely dark, but it's too good to put down. I have not seen any updates on the second book, but fingers crossed it comes out soon! If I couldn't get the last version out of my head, know I am obsessed with this version now! It was an improvement and well worth picking the book up.

A Mad Dark Romance

What do you do when you’re a powerless pawn in a mad dystopian world? You hope a crazy obsessive villain in a metal mask sees you and says “mine”.

This book was so good. Baron is insane, obsessed, clever, and strangely funny. What more could Sapphire ask for in a buyer?

This book is the first in Esme Devlin’s Barrowlands series. It is the first in Sapphire and Baron’s duet. Barron is the most powerful man on the island but no one knows what he looks like or to what lengths he will go to in order to reach his goals. His all consuming goal has just become possessing the sheltered but feisty Sapphire.

The spice in this book is hot and the banter between the tow is sizzling. I’ve never read such a good portrayal of someone who is more than slightly off their rocker than Baron. He gives Madhatter vibes if the Madhatter were a huge pierced maniac in a metal mask with no qualms about putting a bullet in anyone who even looks at his woman. Not looks at her wrong. Looks at her at ALL.

I am about to start the second book in the duet but I enjoyed this book immensely. I gave it 4 stars but it’s really a 4.5 for me and the half star is deducted only bc I wish the book were a bit longer. And even though it was done well, it had one of my least favorite tropes. I hate a grand misunderstanding trope. Communication is key. Even when you’re a bat sh!t crazy man in a metal mask in a post apocalyptic hellscape.

This is so dark and it's fantastic!

I loved this book and it's very very dark. It's really a different kind of dystopian read..it's not really a romance but it's kind of a twisted, freaky, journey that focuses on the couple.. It's a really more of a mind torture tale with a deeply complicated and deranged and somewhat unhinged captor named Baron...he's not a hero by any means yet with Sapphire his behavior can be heroic. Then there's a side of him that's really quite surprising and somewhat sad. Sapphire is a sheltered girl that was born into this world after the fall of society.. There's the evil manipulative Grandmother of Barons and his childhood right hand man. It's a complex story and not a simple read. Which, for some, may be not a book they might like because nothing is spelled out for us. I have to unravel Barons bantering, bartering and game playing along with Sapphire! It's challenging and that's why I love dark reads that are twisted and have really demented, ego maniacal men who will never ever give up their obsessions..I can't wait to read the conclusion of their story.. can Baron love? Maybe not as one may define love. However can he make her his willingly anyway? I guess I'll find out! Esme Devlin is a creative and strong writer not afraid to make me squirm..I love her books and this is amazing!

I had originally read The Carnival's Daughter and I loved it, so to get my hands on this 'new edition' of the story was a gift.
This book is a work if art, yes it's dark and yes there's some dubious consent at times but it is a masterpiece.
Set in a dystopian world it is easy to imagine the dark settings and lack of modern amenities. It's a fight for survival and women are dealt a poor hand in the main. The Carnival is a place of blood, violence and sex, all in the name of entertainment.
Sapphire has grown up in the circus and meets Baron when he brings guests to a show at the Carnival (I'll say no more as I don't want to spoil the story). She has been sheltered and protected by Maxim, who owns the carnival, although his reasons are not as noble as one might think. Sapphire struggles with the enigma that is Baron, who is an extremely complex, scary character with hidden agendas.
This is, as the title indicates a dark and twisted tale and things are not quite as they seem.
Well written, great world building with interesting and engaging characters. I recommend to anyone who enjoys their literature on the dark side.

This book is a dark romance and it is a BEAUTIFULLY written dark romance! I feel like the true definition of dark romance has been muddied up with books that don’t truly fit in the genre so people expect different stories than they should. Either way this book was one that I did not want to put down once I started. This book is one that I know I will read more than just once and I am beyond excited for the next to come!

The characters of this book are exactly what you would hope for but don’t usually get. Sapphire is young and naive in her upbringing but she is not the damsel in distress that you usually come across. Through it all she holds her own and she carves a spot in Baron’s heart that all are surprised to see. Baron is dark, he is someone you know you would fear. At the same time though you can’t help but enjoy his character and the inner workings of his mind.

If you are looking for a light and cheerful read this is not it BUT if you are wanting a true dark romance then this book will not let you down! Seriously fantastic book!

Get transported to a dystopian world where women are a rarity. Saphire works for Maxim at his carnival a place of forbidden wonders and sights to be hold to the paying audiance. But that's not Maxims only trade as each women has a price even Saphires, though hers is to high to be brought except by the man in the mask, Baron. As soon as Baron laid eyes upon Saphire he knew he had to have her, she had fight left in her spirit and he wanted so badly to break it. Baron wants her body, mind, tears, fears, dreams, adorations he wants it all, through his wordsmith games and deals, he never loses but maybe only to her. Saphire is determined to not lose herself within Barons games, she refuses to give her love to him but that's not what he wants, he wants her fear and she fears him to her last breath. But is all as it really seems? A well written captivating read with a great story plot that has you hooked to every page! The characters bust with chemistry and engage you at every twist and turn.

Wow! This was unexpected and I have to say, I dived in knowing nothing of this book.

It. Was. So. Good!

H was tricky maze guy, who used this twisted words as a maze to push you into the corner. In times I had to put the book down because hell, this was exhausting to my brain. To keep up with H twisted game. Books name is so spot on.

I'm usually on a note that when we talk about dystopian or post apocalyptic world, I would prefer h to be strong and independent. In here, that's not the case BUT she's smart, witty and educated. Which is in a sense useless but again not, because that's how she attracted H.

I loved how the story evolved and how their sexual tension was so thick I could cut a piece off.

My only complaint would be more world building. I wanna know more of how this new world works.

I need second book to know what is happening.

Baron goes to my crazy insane mindfuck Jokster type of a book boyfriend list among with Lorenzo, Romero, Javier and Preppy.

I really enjoyed the story of Sapphire and Baron. Even though there is supposed to be another book for them, I felt as though this book could very well work as a stand-alone. Sure, there are a couple of little questions that have yet to be answered, but this book ended in a satisfying, at least for me, HFN. Yes, this is a dark dystopian romance, but it was no where near as dark as what I was expecting when hearing how negative reviewers were towards the story when first released under different title and cover art. If you don’t like dub/noncon, stay away from this book. Other than that, it’s a lot of head games and the H wanting h to believe he’s a much worse person than he really is. This was the first book I’ve read in a long while that had me not wanting to put the book down and I can’t wait to read what comes next for this series

From the beginning, Devlin immediately draws us to this dystopian society with the way she paints the FMC. Women are a jewel, coveted and obtained but not really their own person. Sapphire learns this the hard way after living with a certain naivete.

Baron is hard, calculating, and something lurks below the surface. He acts both cruel and kind and leads you to believe it is all simply part of his game but I digress. The whole scenario with his mask and how no one ever sees him, baffles me. Baron plays into that and Sapphire assumes it's because he disfigured or ugly. I think the symbolism behind the mask has nothing to so with actual physical appearance but everything to do with hiding behind the mask to protect himself internally.

Oh my heart! I LOVE Sapphire and Baron! I enjoy this author so much and this was her first book that I can across when it was Carnival’s Daughter. I’ve now read it twice and enjoyed it more the second time. “Dark romance” can sometimes be all over the place but Esme nails it with this one, my black little heart was happy.

I enjoyed the character development of these two and how you slowly start knowing about the man beneath the mask..pun intended. I enjoyed the creativity of their “games” and like that you start to understand Baron a bit kore towards the end. I will be buying book two the moment it’s released.

*I purchased the original Carnival’s Daughter and I received a free ARC copy of Twisted. I voluntarily choose to leave this honest review.

I really really loved the (original) first book - The Carnival's Daughter - I couldn't wait to read the next one.. except it never came about. What we got instead was this. It's an extended version of Carnival's Daughter, that could now act as a standalone. I guess the new part we got was good, but it wasn't great. Idk, something was missing for me, I didn't really feel their chemistry develop. Overall though, it was a good read, and if the author actually manages to finish the next book, I'll be picking that one up too!
