Twelve days, nine women, and the challenge to not fall in love. He’d have nothing to worry about, if his best friend weren’t one of the nine.
Matthew Pratt wouldn’t change a thing about his life—especially when he learns his childhood friend, Meg, will be joining him and his family for the holiday season. To make matters even better, his mother promises to no longer push him to marry, so long as Matthew meets with nine ladies of her choosing between Christmas and Twelfth Night. For an added prize from his father, Matthew must also keep from falling in love with any of the ladies. Unable to say no to a challenge, Matthew agrees, but that is before he realizes that Meg is numbered with the nine.
Meg Baker has always loved Matthew as a friend, but only recently has she discovered that her feelings are growing beyond that of simple camaraderie. Anxious to discover Matthew’s own feelings, Meg decides to draw as much attention to herself as possible during Christmastide, all before he returns to school.
As the holiday festivities begin, however, and Matthew takes an interest in other women—a great deal of other women—Meg fears she is too late to win his affection. But when a change comes in their relationship, Matthew must decide if he will remain comfortably single forever—or if Meg is worth the risk of a happily ever after.
Book 4 in the Belles of Christmas series, Nine Ladies Dancing, is a standalone Regency holiday romance. The series can also be enjoyed in this order:
Unmasking Lady Caroline by Mindy Burbidge Strunk, Book 1
Goodwill for the Gentleman by Martha Keyes, Book 2
The Earl's Mistletoe Match by Ashtyn Newbold, Book 3
Nine Ladies Dancing by Deborah M. Hathaway, Book 4
Deborah M. Hathaway graduated from Utah State University with a degree in English and Creative Writing. As a young girl, she devoured Jane Austen's novels while watching and re-watching every adaptation of Pride & Prejudice she could, entirely captured by all things Regency and romance.
Throughout her life, she wrote many short stories, poems, and essays, but it was not until after her marriage that she was finally able to complete her first romance novel, attributing the completion to her courtship with, and love of, her charming, English husband.
Deborah finds her inspiration for her novels in her everyday experiences with her husband and children and during her travels to the United Kingdom, where she draws on the beauty of the country in such places as Ireland, Yorkshire, and her beloved Cornwall.
There's something just so cozy about having a sweet Christmas romance to snuggle up and read. Christmas stories just make my heart so light and happy. And this book was such a fun read. I loved Matthew, Meg and Louisa and Mrs. & Mr. Pratt.
Meg's own parents are always off to Scotland to visit with friends. But they leave her with the Pratt family while on their excursions. So Meg has been surrounded by love and laughter and grown up with Matthew and Louisa, the Pratt twins. This Christmas is going to be different. She's going to make sure Matthew notices her. Matthew has other plans...win the bargains he's struck with his parents and have total freedom over his choices without their interference.
Sounds like several complications could come into their lives. Especially when Matthew has to try to get to know nine different ladies and prove to his mother that he's really engaged in her bargain.
Meg has such a sweet heart and a gracious goodness about her. I loved her character. She was so patient even through all the hurt from her life. She had several wake up moments throughout the book that only made me like her more with how she reacted to those moments.
Matthew, well I went back and forth on my feelings for him. I liked him, then I was frustrated with him. But when you read the book, you'll understand that's the nature of how the author wrote his character. He had some learning and growing to do. And who better to help him than his own parents.
I loved the back and forth banter and budding feelings between Matthew and Meg. And the jealousy...hahahaha. You're in for some fun scenes.
Definitely one I would recommend if you enjoy Christmas, Regency and sweet & clean books. And it might even have you wanting to participate in some of the fun games or run outside and watch the falling snow, or go skating or have a snowball fight. Just saying!

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Oh what fun! A Regency Christmas story with all the traditions! Matthew's meddling mother puts him in a situation that has him looking like a bit of a player, while Meg is stuck in the friend zone harboring an unrequited love. He just wants to spend his holidays with his friends, but now he is stuck humoring the local ladies, and Meg is losing patience. I was losing patience with him too, and Meg was starting to come off as a bit pathetic, until he begins to think of more than himself and his perspective matures. It's funny that he doesn't suspect his mother of craftiness and his father of just trying to mix things up a bit, but everyone gets the ending they want after enduring some good holiday angst.
(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)
I started reading this book, but not far into it, I put it down. I didn't love the characters and I found the main girl's jealousy, while understandable, something I didn't want to read about.
I appreciate how clean and safe this story was. However, the constant burgeoning hope and then sudden loss of said hope was annoying after a while. I’m also not sure if all the parents of the heroine of each of the installments in this series are going to be awful people. Maybe excepting book 2. It’s a little strange and formulaic.
I really enjoyed Nine Ladies Dancing and believe this is my favorite of the Belles of Christmas series of novellas, both in terms of plot and because friends to lovers is one of my absolute favorite romance tropes, and having one told in a Regency Christmas setting made it all the more magical.
The story was well written and the premise of the plot unique—Matthew strikes a bargain with his parents to pay court to nine different ladies during the Christmas holidays. If he can manage to not fall in love with any, he can earn his freedom from their encouragement for him to marry. But when the first lady on the list turns out to be his childhood friend Meg, who’s secretly loved him for years…well, that’s where the fun begins.
Meg was a delightful character. Despite her past hurts, she had a gracious goodness about her and possessed such a sweet heart. Her friendship with Matthew was utterly heartwarming and their relationship and banter delightful. My heart felt for her as she watched Matthew’s feelings remain seemingly unrequited, even as she was forced to witness as he paid court to several other women. It was wonderful when he finally began to see her as more than a friend so their cute relationship could blossom. Throughout it all, both characters each experienced some excellent growth. I also found the references to the Twelve Days of Christmas song that were cleverly woven throughout the story a charming touch.
One thing I didn’t enjoy was how frustrating Matthew was. Not only was he rather blind to his own heart, but I simply couldn’t understand his aversion to change and his unrealistic desires for freedom from all responsibility (Didn’t he realize he’d have to grow up someday? Was he truly that naive?), as the reasons the author gave didn’t make sense to me. I also felt it went on too long, especially once Matthew comes to realize his deeper feelings for Meg he still stubbornly clings to his old ideals for several more pages. But eventually, he thankfully realizes that change is inevitable, and his fears aren’t worth losing Meg.
Other than that hiccup, the rest of the plot was engaging and fun, and Matthew and Meg’s romance was adorable. Overall, Nine Ladies Dancing was a lovely read that I thoroughly enjoyed.
This was a charming tale set over The Twelve Days Of Christmas, Mathew was so tired of the constant lectures about duty, and marriage. Out of frustration he agrees to a wager. His mother will host a Christmas gathering of eligible ladies , and gents of the Ton. He must choose a lady to wed at the end of that time. If none truly suit they will give up on the matchmaking schemes. Plus his father will buy him the prize horse he had need wanting. He must divide his time with each lady, and give her his full attention, but not lead them on, no broken hearts over Christmas tide. He agrees but he doesn’t want to do this. He has lifelong friend that live near, and his school studies are up to par. Then there is Meg. Although she is best friends of his sister, she has always been a friend, and close confidant. He thinks of her as another family member, with their competitors, games, and long talks. While over this time that Mathew has beef in University, she had began to see him in a new light. He had become a man, and a handsome one at that. He always sought her out at social functions, and had become charming in her eyes. The only problem was she had been another sister to him, and she would have to change that. His true sister would help her. She could hardly wait to go over early to help decorate their home. The story was charming, and filled with. Christmas traditions during the reign of Victoria, in England. I loved the dialogue, and the whole story filled with laughter, dismay, and a good ending. 4 .25 stars. He was quite sure he would win, with a fast horse in his future. The whole plan had to be a secret, so Meg lost her composure a few times, even his sister did. That made it all the more fun, and interesting . I would recommend for a season themed light , and clean romance.
I think it’s really neat that she included all of the items from the Twelve Days of Christmas song throughout the book. I just wish I had realized that before I read the book so I could keep an eye out for them. I was able to use the search function on my tablet to find the passages with them after the fact though.
Oh, I sure loved this story. My heart skipped several beats, and near the end I choked up big time, nearly spilling tears. The happy ending, however, plastered another smile on my face. Double happy sigh.
Romance - Sweet and Clean Language - None Violence - None Reread - Possibly **Though part of a series, this is a completely stand-alone book **
I absolutely loved this sweet Christmas novella. It was heartwarming, and also at times heartbreaking. Meg is a delightful character, and while I loved Matthew, he needed to be gripped by the lapels and shaken a few times.
This is my first time reading this author, but I look forward to reading more from her.
I really enjoyed this book. The friendship between Meg and Matthew was heartwarming. I loved how the Pratt’s treated Meg as part of the family. I love best friend romances and this book did not disappoint. I highly recommend it.
This was not my favorite. The characters acted so immature and so unsure of everything. I have really enjoyed the other books in this series but this one fell flat for me.
Deborah M. Hathaway does it again with another delightfully romantic Christmas book! Nine Ladies Dancing has exceeded my expectations with a friends to lover trope that has a unique plot to go along with it. It was fun and festive with all the swoony elements that I have come to adore about regency romances.
Meg is once again left alone by her parents who run off to Scotland every year without her. They leave her in the company of the Pratt family who by all accounts are the loveliest people. Meg is surrounded by kindness and love and practically grew up with Matthew and Louisa Pratt. This year is different through since she discovered that she is in love with Matthew. The only problem being that Matthew does not see her like that. Or does he? I loved the dynamic between these characters. Meg and Matthew share a close bond with teasing banter and funny jokes. As the story unfolds so does Matthews budding feelings for Meg. Some of the scenes they had together were sweet and swoony. I was especially hooked on the last few chapters of this story which culminated to the most perfect ending!
Between snowball fights, ice skating, fun games, and kissing boughs this book had everything. I loved the entire Pratt family, especially Louisa who was Meg’s unofficial sister. Meg was just a beautiful and gracious person, and I loved watching her get her happily ever after with her love Matthew. If you enjoy Christmas books, especially regency ones, then I cannot recommend this one enough to you.
Nine ladies dancing were at the end of the last ball before Matthew was to win his wager with his mother and father. He should have been happy. His wager was so nearly won. I am marveling at the clever and skillful way that Ms Hathaway wove this story around Meg and Matthew. I loved these characters, not just Meg and Matthew but also his parents and sister. They are the family that I’m sure anyone would love to have. Furthermore, I got a kick out of each of the other eight ladies. Meg’s parents are another matter entirely. I was so impressed with this story I know I will be thinking about it for a long time to come. Already, I want to go back and read it again. I have read a few of Ms Hathaway’s other books before this one and have been very impressed with how well written they are. I know that when I pick up another book of hers that I will be reading high quality work. Very highly recommended.
Matthew and Meg have been friends since childhood. meg’s parents leave her alone to spend the holidays with Matthews family so they can visit their friends in Scotland. This goes on for years. Matthew and his twin sister Louisa and his parents are very close to Meg and think of her as family. When Matthew goes away to school, Meg realizes her feeling for him are more than friendship or brotherly love. Matthews mother wants him to settle down and take a wife but he keeps avoiding the topic. So his mother makes a bargain with him. Meet 9 ladies of her choosing between Christmas and Twelfth Night and she will stop bothering him to settle down. Meg is at the top of the list but he doesn’t understand why. As he wades through the women his mother has lined up he begins to realize, the only woman he wants to spend time with is Meg.
I had a problem with the hero in this story. Who wants to marry someone who is wishy-washy, won't make decisions or plan for his future, and only goes to university to avoid his mother and said plans for his future? He just doesn't sound like a promising match. Yet Meg seemed to love him. His fun side was appealing but I think women, especially women in this era, want security and he didn't seem all that secure. Because of this it was hard for me to like him. That being said, his mother meeting him at his own level and making a wager with him was a unique story plot for her to move him forward in life so it made the story kind of fun.
This was a fun romantic Christmasy read. I liked how the “nine ladies dancing” was incorporated from the song into this book. Matthew makes a wager to get to know 9 different ladies to get the freedom of not having to settle down from his parents. One of those ladies is his best friend Meg who has been in love with him for awhile. I’ll be honest, Meg drove me crazy in the beginning. I didn’t even know if I was going to like this book because of how pushy and manipulative she was. Meg goes through some character growth though, as well as Matthew, and all remains happy in the end, thus the 5 ⭐️.
I enjoyed this book. It was a cute story. The resolution drug out a little too much for me, but I enjoyed it overall. It had more description than I care for when it came to the kissing scenes, or chemistry scenes. It was a clean read.
Language: None Sex: A couple of kisses, more descriptive than I care for, but not dirty. More chemistry description than I like, but not dirty or inappropriate. Violence/Gore: None
This was SO cute. I mean… I was pretty frustrated with Matthew for a while there. But he eventually figured it out. I liked how Meg took Louisa’s advice to heart and grew as well. I think this may be my favorite friends to lovers book I’ve ever read. I loved the connection Meg had with each member of the Pratt family. The moments Meg and Matthew spent together were adorable. Another happy Christmas romance :)
A heartwarming Christmas story full of wit, laughter and bargains. While two long time friends try to work past friendship and into more is a sweet tale of discovery and love. Well written and developed characters and plot. Very enjoyable and look forward to reading more from this series and author!
I really enjoyed this book. Meg and Matthew have been friends, along with Matthew's twin sister, Louise, for years. When Matthew returns home for the Christmas holiday, his parents devise a scheme to encourage him to marry. I really liked the references to "The Twelve Days of Christmas" song, scattered throughout the story.
This book has almost as many wagers as a book at White's! I loved the characters and their quirks, though i wanted to wack Matthew on the head a few times! I loved the visual of nine dancing ladies at the 12th night party. Pick up this story of childhood friendship and love.
Such a roller coaster!! But I loved every moment of it! I cried so much... the author has the ability to pull the reader into the book and help the reader feel what the characters felt!
Clean but pretty silly. The only impediments to the romance being their own insecurities. It was a quick read, but put me in the mood for something more substantial.
There is a lot of complications going on between Matthew and Meg as they navigate through this new stage which exceeds the friendship level and becomes a love that needs to be shared by both in a forever happy ever after
One of my favorites. His mother sends him on a merry chase wager that leads him back home to his best friend. But is he too late? Highly recommended for all readers.
Such a cute book with a meddling Mr. and Mrs. Pratt, but only in the kindest of ways. Matthew's parents are so good to their two (three) kids, but Meg's parents are quite the opposite. A fun book to read at Christmastime.
This is a darling story of a young man and woman who have grown up together. Meg and Matthew have spent every Christmas together since they were children. However, times have changed and Matthew's parents are trying to get him to marry. His mother comes up with a list of nine ladies whom she wants Matthew to get to know over the Christmas holiday. Meg is at the top of the list. However, Matthew can't tell his beloved friend what he is doing and his goal is to not fall for any of the women and not only earn a new horse from his father, but a reprieve from his mother's match making. However, as Matthew compares each of the women to Meg, he realizes that his friend has grown to be something more, but is he willing to sacrifice his freedom for marriage?
This is a quick, fun, clean read that is available for Amazon Prime members. I highly recommend this series and am looking forward to reading more by this author!
I wonderful story is far from your typical romance. I loved the characters and the family in general. The author did a wonderful job developing the plot and characters
