Rose Fleming has been presumed dead for the last decade. It required leaving everything—and everyone—she loved behind, including MacAllister Campbell. But faking her death allowed her to stay safe until the threat posed by a mysterious villain had passed. Believing it’s finally safe again, she returns...and runs smack into the only man she ever loved.

But Rose was wrong and the stalker she escaped years ago still has her in his sights.

Ten years ago, Mac mourned the death of the woman he loved. It’s taken years to heal his heart only to discover that not only is Rose still alive, but still in grave danger. Mac can forgive Rose’s deception, but he’d never be able to forgive himself if he didn’t protect her from the evil still stalking her.

The only thing worse than losing her once would be losing her again... and he won’t let that happen.

What a wonderfully written, exciting story When a Lady Kisses a Scot was. Filled with intrigue and love, I seriously could not stop reading this story.

Rose was a strong, independent woman determined to get to the bottom of her parents death and the death of her Aunt. She would never have returned to London if it wasn’t for her Aunt’s pleas for help. She knew it could be a trap but had to take the chance. She never thought that it would be MacAllister that would be the one to help her. She’s lived without a man for all these years, she has to find a way to harden her heart against the one man who she has dreamed about all these years.

MacAllister mourned the woman he left behind and can’t believe that it was all a lie. Even after her explanation, there is a part of him that is astonished that no one told him the truth, trusted him enough to protect the one woman who held his heart. But, now he has his chance and he won’t let her down or let any one hurt her.

Together they finally solve the mystery but not without a few more deaths and a labyrinth of clues and secrets. When the truth comes out and the story starts to come to a close, you hold your breath wondering just what Rose will do and how MacAllister will handle it. Then, when it does end, you couldn’t help but let out the breath you were holding, smile and shed a little tear.

What a wonderful story this was. It was intriguing, interesting, romantic and mysterious. I loved how the story flowed and there was never a dull moment. You didn’t know what was going to happen from page to page, and I love that in a story. I had no idea and was totally surprised with the whodunnit and was thrilled with the ending. Tara Kingston really knows how to write Historical Romance, how to intertwine the romance with the mystery and how to hold her readers so that they are turning page after page.

This was certainly an action packed story right from the start. Rose Fleming was an independent woman, as she has had to have been due to unfortunate circumstances. MacAliister Campbell, was brave and fearless and still loved Rose, as he had when he had last seen her ten year’s ago. Rose still loves MacAllister but there are people who wish to see Rose dead. There follows quite a mystery as to who wants Rose killed and why. A number of clues are left and some interesting secondary characters helps out. Also Rose and MacAllister need to come to terms with their feelings and how it can work out with their new lives. This was an entertaining read. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Unexpected meetings, unexpected consequences!

When Rose Fleming slips back into England having fled for her life to New York ten years ago she little suspected she'd run smack dab into the love of her life, MacAllister Campbell. Rose was being pursued by an arcane arts practicioner and his thugs, having been brought into their circle and mysteriously tattooed as a child with a falcon.
To say MacAllister was rendered speechless by this happenstance is no rash assumption, particularly as he believed Rose had died then. But a kiss will always tell through.
Rose has returned to England in disguise to get to the bottom of her aunt's untimely death and to lay to rest once and for all the mystery behind what has happened to herself and her loved ones over the years
MacAllister, a prominent newspaper journalist, is in reality part of a cohort of spies, the Colton Agency, acting for the Home Office. He is not about to let Rose slip through his grasp, nor be taken by evil forces--for both personal reasons, and for those of state security. Rose's troubles have alerted the Home Office to more sinister happenings within their purview.
A gripping and rather racy love story with many a twist, although to my mind the ending, whilst imbued with a certain amount of tension and satisfaction, drifted away somewhat without the crashing wave breaking finale I sort of wanted.

Rose Fleming has been in hiding for years. Someone wants her dead and everyone who tried to help her is dead. Now she is on her own and comes out of hiding. Not expecting to run into an old flame or to have him want to stick by her side. Can she avoid him and solve the mystery of who is after her or does she need him to be free.

What a great story it really kept me wanting more I couldn't put it down.

When she fled Scotland for America a decade ago, Rose gave up any hope of seeing MacAllister Campbell, the man she’d loved, in favor of survival. Her life depended on the man hunting for her believing her dead.

Now, she’s back in London, determined to find justice for her aunt, but she’s starting to suspect she’s been lured into a trap. When she runs into MacAllister by chance, she knows he might be the only man in England she can trust - if he’ll forgive her for letting him believe she was dead.

I always get frustrated with this sort of story if the man starts making the deception All About His Feelings, because survival trumps honesty any day, but to MacAllister’s credit he only had one or two moments of resentment about it, recognising very quickly that Rose’s enemies were well-funded and well-connected, and willing to stop at nothing to get her.

There was a lot of belief in the occult during the Victorian era, and the story plays heavily on that, with what amounts to a cult seeking Rose for their own purposes, determined to sacrifice her in an attempt to gain immortality. There’s no actual paranormal events in the book, just people doing what people do for their own selfish reasons, but readers with triggers should be aware there are several murders, some child cruelty and involuntary body modification (her father tattooed Rose when she was young).

I’ve read several books in this series about operatives and associates of the Colton Agency, a secret agency of operatives for the Crown in the late Victorian era, but you don’t need to have read any others to jump right in and enjoy this one. There’s a good solid romance between the two core protagonists, lots of action, women making their own choices and fighting their own battles, and nothing which jumped out to me as anachronistic for the era. Five stars.

As expected from this author this newest book is a suspense thriller with romantic overtones.
This is book #4 in Her Majesty’s Most Secret Service series and although the title may lead you to think otherwise the story doesn't occur in Scotland. Our hero though is Scottish born.
This Romantic Suspense starts out in London and most of the story happens there.
There are a surplus of characters being murdered and some are closely connected to our heroine and some only briefly crossed paths with her. All are connected to our villain though.
The murder victims seem almost ceaseless but the romance is a very nice compliment to this tragic storyline.
I gave this book 4.25 (rounded down to 4) of 5 stars.
I received a complimentary copy of this book to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Reviewed on my blog, Becky on Books, on 8/1/19.

There is so much going on in When a Lady Kisses a Scot--a heroine in hiding, presumed dead; a hero and associates who are part of "Her Majesty's Most Secret Service;" a secret society with evil intentions; hidden tattoos; mysterious pictures and jewelry; so many characters with probably nefarious intentions--at times it was all a bit much to keep track of, and not having read earlier books in the series, I wasn't familiar with those characters either. (They play roles here, but you don't have to have read their stories to read this one; it just would have been easier to keep track of who was who if I'd read the others first.) The pacing also seemed a bit uneven--at times we were hurtling around at breakneck speed, and at other times I found myself checking how much more of the book was left...

Overall it was a decent story--the ending is satisfying, and the bad guys/gals eventually get their due (though I still don't 100% understand what exactly they were trying to do--their precise motivations were a bit vague beyond the idea of somehow gaining immortality and power). I do like the idea of men and women working together in "secret service" type organizations, especially in a historical romance, so chances are good that I'd pick up another book by this author even if I didn't totally love everything about this one.

Rating: 3 1/2 stars / C+

Starting a series from anywhere but the beginning is a big mistake in some cases and in others is not. The book is stand-alone and there was no problem getting into the story, but I wouldn't have touched the book if I knew that the story takes place in the late 1800's. That is not the kind of HR I like to read. Our heroine was presumed dead for a decade, but she was living in America the whole time, building a life for herself after she ran away from the wem who wanted to see her harmed. In her old life, she and MacAllister had feelings for each other, but he thought she was dead, so he moved on with his life. Now, they are back into each other's lives and Rose is once again in danger and in want of MacAllister's help. The rest is for you to find out. Overall the book was mediocre. There were times where things were good and interesting and others where I was checking to see how much I had left to read. Whether you read it or not, is up to you.

Life has been a roller coaster for Rose Fleming. A woman who had to start her life over again, became successful. However, the past always has a way of catching up. Escaping from those who tried to take years ago by faking her death, she returns to save those she loves. She never expected to run into the only man she has ever loved, MacAllister Campbell. MacAllister biggest regret is not being there to save Rose. She haunts his thoughts constantly and when he runs into her again, he has no plans to let her go. He will do what he promised himself years ago, protect and keep Rose safe. As they try to uncover the plot to who wants Rose dead, their love for each other continues to grow. Rose is no damsel in distress and MacAllister is no knight in shining armor, but together they will stop the evil that has been plaguing Rose since she was young.

I was granted the privilege to read an ARC of this book not knowing it was number 4 in the series. I was worried when I noticed but this can be read as a stand-alone. You get to meet the other characters from past books as you find out they are together but honestly if you are a romance lover like me, we all know the hero and heroine will get together in the end 😉. I also had no clue how much adventure and suspense I would find with in the pages of this amazing book! Tara Kingston is a new to me author but not anymore! I loved her style of writing; she has created a wonderful world were women and men work together to keep people safe. I loved every page, cried, screamed, and wanted to cover my eyes at parts.
Rose and MacAllister are two headstrong set in their lives people and even though they want to be together it doesn’t look possible. Rose lives in NYC and MacAllister lives in London, not exactly the easiest commute. Not that they get to think about that in the beginning anyway. There is someone trying to keep their happy ever after from becoming a possibility. Rose and MacAllister have to work together to know if a future is even possible. So, what are you waiting for go grab this fantastic book, curl up in your spot an enjoy!

This was my first read by Tara. The prologue had sucked me in, although with chapter 1 happening ten years later I kind of was hoping the main couple Mac and Rose weren't going to meet again so quickly due to the circumstances. I kind of wanted more of an anticipation as a reader. I'm also unsure if these characters appear in the other books in this series, but they are all standalones. I was surprised by the mystery and action that happened and 10% left in the book was glad for a change of a longer ending. Overall this was a good read!

When a Lady Kisses a Scot by Tara Kingston is book 4 in the Her Majesty's Most Secret Service. This is the story of Rose Fleming and MacAllister Campbell. I have read the previous books but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so.
Rose had to leave everything behind about 10 years ago due to someone out to get her. Now in their present day she has returned to England only to find things aren't safe still. Rose ends up running into MacAllister who thought she had died. MacAllister and Rose had been friends along with having feelings for each other. It took MacAllister a long time to come to terms with the loss of Rose now to only find that she is in danger. MacAllister vows to protect her which leads to their feelings starting back up.
Loved their story.

After fleeing for her life ten years before, Rose Fleming has returned to England to late to save her aunt. Although she is scared, this time she will see justice done. She did not expect to run into an old friend.
MacAllister Campbell is a journalist and an agent for the Crown. When a woman who he believed dead suddenly appears, his whole world is turned upside down.
The bodies soon start to pile up around our heroine. It's time to take the help of people who know how to help. Our hero will do his best to find the culprits and keep her safe.
A very exciting murder mystery.
This is a Victorian historical romance and part of a series. Each book in the series is connected but can be read alone.
I loved it.

This was a wonderful second chance at love story. It was a treat to indulge oneself in. Rose Fleming had to flee her home ten years ago and leave her old life and love behind. MacAlister Campbell was shocked to be looking into the eyes of a woman he loved and thought dead. This story is full of suspense, emotional distress, an unknown murderer, a relentless stalker and secon chance at love. I enjoyed reading this. It kept my interest throughout the book. I heartily recommend it and give it five stars. I received this copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily reviewing. My opinions are my own.

I absolutely loved that this story did not follow the typical, historical romance 'formula'. It was a very unique tale that immediately drew me in. The characters were vivid and complex and made the story seem so realistic, that I often felt like I was actually there watching the story unfold.

As this is my introduction read to Mrs Tara Kingston’s work, and the forth in a series, I do wondered if I would not be a bit lost as some of the previous books protagonists took part in this one’s action. But the author did a great job, the side characters were perfectly integrated with reasonably details to not derail the storytelling and not enough to need me to read their stories.
It was a very different read from the Historical romance I do read.
I did not questioned the romance part as despite the prologue which sucked me in the story, the first chapter rekindling the main couple left me few things to wonder. Sure, the very last part of the book kept me a bit on edge of how they would be able to make it work with an ocean separating them from their own established life.
I had no doubt about their love, time didn’t tempered their feelings, their passion is still there only waiting to be reawakened.
Now about the whole plot, it felt like reading a suspense novel, wondering when will occur the next betrayal or murder as corpses seem to follow each step of the heroine.
My only reserve is about the motive of the vilain, what did he really expected from Rose, sure some explanations were given by the end but it was quite a crazy scheme concocted by a mad man, but it did not diminished the entertainment of the full narrative.
A 4.5 stars read

THOUGHTS

This book. I’ve never had so many emotions about the leading characters. Don’t be fooled by the title - Scotland and being Scottish hardly apply to this book. You won’t read of the beautiful Scottish burr. Which is a shame.

If you’re anything like me, this book will frustrate you and make you hate the lead characters just a little. It makes no sense to me that *spoiler alert* Mac is terrified of loosing Rose as he once did ten years ago. But it quite happy to sleep with her.

There just something about the writing style, or missing story element that hadn’t quite been ironed out. If Rose was the love of his life then how could he easily let you go? Maybe it’s because I’ve read many a historical romance and while the leading man is always a little pigheaded the one thing you can count on his their need to protect - at all costs. Mac lack some of that.

Though in all honesty the same could be applied to Rose, this strong, independent woman who didn’t want anyone to get hurt. Makes sense. What doesn’t make sense to me is that she left her bodyguard back in America?!? Erm hello... you’re returning back to England knowing that someone wants to kill you and yet you don’t protect yourself!

It’s these little plot elements *or booboos* as I like to call them that make this a frustrating read, it’s full of strong characters but it’s like the author has crammed too much in.

Tara Kingston spices a pot rich in intrigue, danger, passion and desire in her latest historical romance, When a Lady Kisses a Scot.

With a dangerous enemy intent on destroying everything she held dear to her heart, a frightened Rose Fleming had had no other choice but to flee the only home she has ever known and let everybody think that she had died in a tragic carriage accident. Rose had hoped that by feigning her death she would be unshackled from the constant fear that had claimed and destroyed the life of her family, however, for the past ten years she has had to live a life without the man she loves by her side, Macallister Campbell. When the threat that had destroyed her life resurfaces, Rose needs to protect herself at all costs, so she changes her hair color and assumes another name. Yet, this deception only ends up plunging her into further danger – and as if things weren’t complicated enough, she runs smack into the one man she had hoped never to see again. The one man she loves with all of her heart: Macallister Campbell…

Mac had been absolutely devastated when he had learnt that the woman he had hoped to spend the rest of his life with was dead. Mac has tried his hardest to move on with his life, but forgetting Rose has proved to be easier said than done. He is still haunted by her touch and her kisses and his heart will simply never heal from knowing that he will never embrace her again. However, all that looks set to change when a chance encounter propels him straight into the path of the woman he thought dead for the past ten years – Rose. Despite her protestations that she is not the woman he loves, all it takes for Mac to know that the woman standing in front of him is his one true love is a passionate kiss that makes him even more determined never to let her out of his sight ever again.

However, Rose is a woman in grave danger and Mac will move mountains to protect her. He had lost her once and he is not prepared to lose her again, but will he manage to track down the threat to their happiness and spend the rest of his life making up for lost time with Rose? Or is Mac up against a ruthless enemy who will not stop until Rose is dead and buried?

When a Lady Kisses a Scot is a sexy, enjoyable and enthralling historical romance where the action is fast-paced, the passion red-hot and steamy, the emotion intense and dramatic and the suspense nail-biting and compelling. Tara Kingston certainly knows how to grab her readers’ attention from the very first page and in When a Lady Kisses a Scot, she has penned a fantastic historical romance that kept me on the edge of my seat and turning the pages late into the night.

Readers looking for an exciting and emotional historical romance rich in sensuality, suspense and heart, need to look no further than Tara Kingston’s latest When a Lady Kisses a Scot.

When a Lady Kisses a Scot is the fourth book in the Her Majesty's Most Secret Service series by Tara Kingston. This is the first book I have read in the series, and while there are clearly some carried over characters and relationships this book can be read as a stand alone.

When a Lady Kisses a Scot is a romance that had a great deal happening, but somehow felt like it was missing something. Rose ran for her life as a teen- with little understanding of what she was running from. MacAllister has been working hard and making a difference. Neither of them had forgotten each other from when they met in their youth and only met again by chance as Rose's life is in danger again. I rather liked both characters, and I liked getting to see the story from both of their perspectives. I thought their personalities, reactions, and banter were all good. I thought that the inner dialogues were good for the most part, but there was just so much mooning about the other that I got to the point where I was skimming some of it waiting for conversations or action to begin again. The mystery and danger surrounding Rose was mixed- some parts were very well done and intriguing while other things just were left vague and with few answers. When the action was happening I was invested and curious about what might be happening next, but I felt like there was too much of some of the unimportant pondered over and over while the critical information was often glossed over or included in passing. It was just such a missed bag for me- what I enjoyed was fantastic, while other moments had me looking to see how much of the book was left.

When a Lady Kisses a Scot is a good historical romance with a lot going on. I think fans of the series will want to pick it up but I would recommend other first time readers check out from the library to see if you enjoy the writing style.

3.5 stars rounded up

In order to save herself from her father's enemy, Rose Fleming faked her death and began a new life in America, leaving behind everything in Scotland, including the man she loved, MacAllister Campbell. Now, 10 years later, she's returned to Scotland to help her aunt, only to find that she's too late: her aunt been murdered and the threat against Rose herself is far from over, especially now that her mysterious stalked has confirmed she still lives.

Mac has mourned the death of the woman he loved for the past ten years. He'd recognize her anywhere, so when she runs into him in London he demands answers. It becomes immediately clear that Rose is in danger and this time Mac is determined to protect her. He plans to be sure he won't lose her again, even if she's less than enthusiastic about accepting his help.

**There may be what some consider to be spoilers in my personal commentary from here on.

I understand Rose's unwillingness to put MacAllister in danger, but once it was clear he was already in danger, more than capable of handling it, and that she really did trust him, I wish she'd have stopped harping on about doing everything on her own. Her dialogues really became rather repetitive. Sometimes it felt as though I were rereading parts of the book I'd already read. In fact a couple of exchanges between Rose and Mac were nearly identical.

Though the romance itself took a backseat here, there was never any doubting their remaining feelings for each other. However, one of my biggest pet peeves was brought into play here: the separation. As if they hadn't already been separated long enough, Rose and Mac were apart again for six months before their eventual HEA. It wasn't believable to me that MacAllister would ever let Rose out of his sight again and for her part, Rose was totally unwilling to make any compromises; despite how lonely she frequently complained she'd been in America, she still insisted she must return and wouldn't entertain any alternatives. At this point I was pretty much done with her and wondering why Mac was putting up with her.

I greatly enjoyed the plot itself and loved the suspense of it, but the villain's motives needed more fleshing out for me that we never really got in the end. Despite their obvious chemistry and connection, everything from Rose just seemed contrived and rather fake, but despite not being convinced by or thrilled with her, I enjoyed this read overall. I will definitely be seeking out the other installments of this series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Chemistry: 💥💥💥💥
Heat: 🔥🔥
Victorian romping: 🌂🌂🌂🌂

When Rose Fleming’s father is murdered, she must flee from the dangerous men who murdered him and still pursue her. How? Disappear entirely. No one is more devastated by her “death” than MacAllister Campbell. Imagine Mac’s surprise, years later, to find that his true love is very much alive - and very much in trouble. Alas, an ocean and many years have separated them. Can Rose and MacAllister find a way to be together again while fending off dark threats left and right?

This book was a rompy, Clue-like mystery romance. Rose is a feisty heroine and I liked her. She’s incredibly independent, having built a life for herself as a single woman in Victorian England. She created her own success without a man and refuses to surrender that independence for anything (or to anyone). For his part, MacAllister is just enough of an alpha to make you all swoony but not so much of one that he is threatened by Rose’s independence (rather, he celebrates it).

Perhaps that is what I liked most about this story. It’s about two grown adults who fell in love as teenagers and then separated, building their own lives in spite of their heartbreak and having great success all the while. When they find one another again, the spark is still there - that instant chemistry and lust still burns brightly. But they are different people now. In many ways, this is a story of getting to know someone again and learning to reconcile the person they are with the person they once were.

The mystery element was good and read a bit like a more menacing, Victorian Clue. (Not an insult). One crime leads to another crime as the villain tries to close his snare. Occultish forces run in the background and, while I wish there were a few more breadcrumbs scattered throughout the book (to give us a better chance of solving it on our own), I was okay with how it resolved. It was as I suspected but, again, I wish there had been more clues along the way.

If you like romance that has plenty of emotional clasps, a rompy mystery, and rollicking plot movement, definitely look this one up. I enjoyed it and could definitely see myself reading the books of other characters - like Sophie, who I stan bigly.

Kiss & Tell: Two sex scenes are what you’ll find (plus some v sexy kissing) and, while they are technically explicit, they are very tame. Lovely and tender, but the descriptions of kissing, some touching, and p&v penetration are subtle and quick. They reminded me, in some ways, of Mary Balogh’s sex scenes, if that means anything to you.

In 1884 Rose Fleming is fleeing the carriage accident that killed her brother leaving her and her aunt alive. Rose goes into hiding after this and leaves her beloved Scotland forever. In London ten years later, Rose has resurfaced running away again to escape an unknown stranger chasing her but Rose also has a mission for justice for her aunt. As the stranger pursues her, Rose runs into someone from her past, MacAllister Campbell. Rose’s only way to avoid capture a man, any man, MacAllister could save her if she could convince him to play along. As the man intent on capturing her approaches; Rose must do something bold and brash so she kisses MacAllister knowing deep down she’ll regret it but at least she’ll be alive. Of course MacAllister isn’t willing to forgive and forget Rose so easily; he lost her once he won’t lose her again no matter who is chasing her.
What an amazing fast paced historical Regency novel filled not only with action, suspense, secrets, betrayal and of course a sigh worthy romance! The author just pulls you in and doesn’t let you go until the very last page! Yes this book is part of a series but doesn’t have to be read in order either. Now of course there are some things that are hard to overlook one big one is Rose’s run from danger then suddenly it’s ten years later and suddenly Rose has this identity but we are never truly divulged her life in America. Sure we are told small snippets but it would have been nice to have at least a chapter of what her life was like before she resurfaced again. Another is the relationship that she and MacAllister had before she runs into him again. Most definitely he doesn’t trust her but who can blame him? In fact we don’t really feel the connection between the two except for physically which there is obviously something more to it than that. MacAllister despite his trust issues is just a wonderful hero! He’s strong, brave and definitely handsome to boot so a great book boyfriend! He’s also a spy what’s not to like? While Rose carries the mystery a little too far and we never learn who she really is? Sure she has people trailing after her but the trust thing never happens. In a sense the anticipation of her leaving all the time just is bothersome. Still this is a great book and makes one look forward to rereading the rest in the series while waiting for the next one!

the fourth book in her majesty's most secret service series is essentially a second-chance romance wrapped into historical romantic suspense, so when a lady kisses a scot runs into one of my least favorite tropes. but in this case, our lady heroine, rose fleming, had to go into hiding after her father was murdered and her family targeted.

she escapes to america and for ten long years doesn't set foot on british soil. and never explains to the man she loved that she survived the terrible carriage accident. for his part macallister campbell doesn't begrudge the lack of trust or deception too badly. and while they don't forget their past, the story is more about the present they are living and the possibility of the future. he does understand that she made the choices she did because she
was in danger.

in fact, she is still in danger. and that's where his spy background comes in handy.

but wait, can we talk about this dude's name? macallister campbell is quite a mouthful, and while he goes by mac, it's such a freaking cliché for a scotsman. his name is essentially two last names. i don't know. i mean i'm often rolling my eyes at the names authors sometimes choose for their characters. but fo some reason, i cannot with macallister. it's really not a first name.

ok sorry, so yeah, there's a series of mysteries that the two of them work together to solve. and they reconnect and the spark is still there. and it's a romance so you know what happens.

i always kind of enjoy this era because fascination that victorians had with spiritualists and the occult just adds to the atmosphere in these stories.

“We all have our secrets…”

Rose Fleming has been in hiding for the better part of her life. After the death of her brother and the threat on her own life, Rose flees her home in Scotland and builds a new life for herself in New York. Finally feeling safe with an ocean between her and the villain that has haunted her dreams, Rose is stricken with fear when she receives an ominous note from her aunt beseeching her help. Without thought to her own safety, Rose rushes to her aunt’s side only to discover she is too late, and was lured back to London for reasons far too sinister to imagine.

MacAllister Campbell is shocked to discover that the woman who ran into his arms as if the very Devil was chasing her is non-other than his lost love, Rose Fleming. Long thought dead these past 10 years, when she clings to him and begs for his kiss, he’s, of course, obliged to come to her rescue. But as the plot of her reasons for fleeing the country and faking her death unravels, MacAllister vows to protect Rose at any cost…even if it’s his own life.

When A Lady Kisses a Scot is my first read by Tara Kingston. What lies within these pages, is not what the shiny cover portrays. Rose and MacAllister’s journey to a happily ever after is filled with a macabre mystery. Once I set the thought of this being a romance to the side and read it as a mystery, I found myself enjoying the story more. This is part of Tara Kingston’s Her Majesty’s Most Secret Service Series, but may be read standalone. There are no cliffhangers. Would recommend to fans of historical reads.

The novel encompasses the lost but not forgotten love between Rose Fleming and Campbell MacAllister. Tara Kingston (When A Lady Kisses a Scot) brings us back to the Colton Agency in the fourth book in Her Majesty’s Most Secret Service. A large cast of recurring characters will leave you familiar with her previous books.

Rose Fleming is entangled in a web of deceit, danger and lies. She desperately has tried to protect all the people she’s loved around her. Her decision to fake her own death is now crumbling in to pieces. As she investigates her father’s past, she stumbles upon disturbing details that led to his death.

Campbell MacAllister believed Rose Fleming died ten years ago. He can hardly believe his eyes when he sees her smack in the middle of London. Rose quickly uses MacAllister in order to evade the people that are following her. MacAllister realizes Rose is in grave danger and decides to protect her. As they embark on trying to figure out who’s after her, they rekindle their lost but not forgotten love.

Readers will love Rose and MacAllister. She’s a courageous lady filled with passion, intrigue and a bout of mystery. Rose is determined to keep her secrets in order to protect MacAllister. MacAllister is honor bound, protective and tender in his touch. Once he has Rose in his grasp, he’s determined to never let her go. The dangerous plot of twists and turns will keep the readers engaged. In the end, Kingston brings this novel to a climatic finish.

I highly recommend this book for those who love Mystery and Historical Romance. Although, this is a perfect stand alone book, reading the previous books are helpful in understanding the other characters.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Entangled Publishing via NetGalley and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

This is the first book of this series that I have read. By looking at the synopsis of the prior books, I can see that the prior characters are making appearances in this book.

The story of Rose Fleming and MacAllister Campbell's journey to their HEA is one that is full of intrigue, murder and mayhem. The plot was intricately woven with many questions that arose. I was in for a wonderful ride. The highs and lows of the journey were well worth it. I was glued to my e-reader to try and answer some of the questions. Namely who is behind the plot to kidnap Rose!

I was enchanted in the romance between Rose and MacAllister. The back story of these two characters was filled with heart-break and tears. The dual POV format that this book is written in, really brought these two wonderful characters to life. Being in their thoughts, to see their hopes and fears, really humanized them to me.

The author delighted me with just enough detail of information so I could picture the scenes like a movie playing out in front of me. I was almost brought to tears a few times. The characters and plot were well thought out. Also the author did not just end the book when the intrigue was over. No, she brought a few more chapters of these characters to life so I could really get a more complete feel for their HEA.

There were some scenes that may offend some due to the inclusion of a sexual nature BUT they were done in a manner that were not written in much detail, mainly just eluded to.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a wonderfully crafted historical romance that is fully of intrigue.

What an engaging tale
Our tale begins with our heroine Rose fleeing a villain who we do not know a whole lot about.
Her family is lost to her, she is alone, unable to seek help from the one man she wants because she fears to endanger him.
After close to a decade of being invisible she resurfaces in London to seek out some answers.
Not such a smart move. It seems she has been found and not just by the enemy.
Mac has always felt the loss of his Rose deeply. He has questioned if he made the right decisions all those years ago. A night that begins like any other brings him face to face with his lost Rose. Not only is she alive but it seems she may require a bit of assistance.
As Rose and MacAllister unravel the mystery of who is after her and why they must also face the true depth of their feelings for one another.

The characters were well crafted and the story stayed at a pretty steady pace.
Lots of breadcrumbs surrounding the mystery kept me engaged and turning the pages.
Rose IMO needed to back down a bit and take a thorough evaluation of her actions and reactions. Her character felt a bit waffly going from intelligent decisions to WTheck are you thinking moments.
Mac stumbled a few times with regards to how he felt but IMO he was more levelheaded than Rose and a lot more honest with himself about his feelings
When it came to the chemistry between them I had some doubts.

For me, the romance felt secondary to the mystery in this story.
I enjoyed the hunt.
I am curious to read some of the other books in this series
The copy I read was provided by Netgalley

*I received an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review*

As a whole, this is an entertaining and fun read. My favorite aspect was the mystery behind the attempts on Rose's life and the murders of those close to her. Watching the investigation unfold and bringing in the additional agents from the investigation agency kept the action moving along at a good pace. The prologue sucks you in immediately and I liked that the next chapter picks up 10 years later and drops you right into the middle of the action. The final revelation isn't a complete surprise, but there are a few twists and turns that keep you interested.

Rose is a strong heroine and (as it is pointed out multiple times) is able to overcome her fears and do what she has to in order to free herself from those plotting against her. MacAllister is everything a historical romance hero should be. With that said, it was actually the romance part of the book that I found least interesting. Some of the dialogue between Rose and MacAllister is a little cheesy and had me rolling my eyes at times. I loved them as a couple, it really was just the times they were speaking lovingly to one another that I thought could have been better written..

I don't want to give away too much, but I have to say I did thoroughly enjoy Rose fighting for her freedom rather than waiting to be rescued - she was definitely not a damsel in distress. It was also nice to see that she didn't have to automatically give up the life she had made for herself simply for being a woman in this time period.
