My life is a friggin’ fairytale—just not the kind any single girl would ever want to star in.
Laney:
Like any good heroine, I’ve got a few challenges to face. Getting my son to wear pants is one; dealing with my snoozefest of a job is another. Then there’s the Beast, my freeloading brother who’s worn a permanent dent in the couch at my new place. And no fairytale would be complete without a smoking hot prince, of course. Too bad he’s a complete ass.
Everything in me screams to steer clear of Nate Murphy. Because, if life has taught me anything, there is no such thing as happily ever after.
Nate:
I may not be a superhero, but I do my best to come to the rescue when I’m needed. And, hey, I just moved halfway across the country after a single phone call from my mom. But being back home and taking on the responsibilities involved makes me a bit cranky at times. Unfortunately, the one time I completely lose my cool is in front of the hottest girl I’ve ever met. I’ve got my work cut out for me if I’m going to fix this. But I will fix this.
I’ll be anything Laney Monroe needs me to be … a superhero, a prince, or just a guy she might take a chance on.
PLEASE NOTE: This product is a republication of the 2016 version of THE FIX. It contains special content and bonus scenes for an enhanced reader experience.
USA Today bestselling author Sylvie Stewart loves bad jokes, dirty rom-coms, country music, and baby skunks—preferably all at the same time. Most of her steamy contemporary and romantic comedy novels take place across her favorite state of North Carolina, and her characters never run out of snarky banter or snacks. When her laptop closes, Sylvie is a sucker for hugs from her twin boys and a good laugh with her hot-nerd hubby. If you love smart Southern gals, hot blue-collar guys, and snort-laughing with characters who feel like your best friends, Sylvie's your gal.
The Fix is book one in The Carolina Connections series by Sylvie Stewart. This is my very first book by Ms. Stewart. I’ve had it on my kindle for a long time and chose it today because I was looking for a single mom romance. This was a sweet, fun little romp with these two and an adorable little boy named Rocco.
Nate Murphy just turned thirty one years old. He grew up in the construction business his father owned called Built by Murphy. It was always assumed that he would work by his father’s side. But Nate preferred to be working outside, not the administrative side of things. So he chose to move away for a couple of years to Texas and work. But now his father has had a major heart attack and Nate and his sister need to take over for him. There is no hesitation, Nate is going home.
Laney Monroe is twenty five years old and is a single mom to her adorable son, Rocco. Laney’s life may not have turned out exactly as she thought but she wouldn’t change a thing because her son is the center of her world. She still finished college and has a good, although somewhat boring, job. She just bought her first house that is a bit of a fixer upper but she loves it. Her brother moved in with her to help out with the repairs and with Rocco. Although he hasn’t done anything in the way of repairs just yet.
Nate isn’t anti-relationship but hasn’t met anyone he was interested in anything more than casual with. He was having a very bad morning the morning Laney stormed into his life and he might not have made the best first impression. But he is determined to get a second chance. He has the skills she needs for her new house and he would be happy to show her a few of his other skills if she’d let him. He doesn’t have much experience around kids, has never dated anyone with children. Rocco is slow to warm up to him but little by little, the little boy steals a chunk of his heart and from then on, Nate is all in.
This is a slow burn fun little romance. While little Rocco was stealing Nate’s heart, he was stealing mine at the same time. Laney is a mom first and I liked that Nate had no problem with that. The next book in the series, The Spark, is Laney’s best friend, Fiona, and Nate’s friend, Mark’s book. I can tell you from the little I’ve seen of these two in this book, this is a very appropriate title!

DNF I tried! I really am. But I just can not go past 20% of the audio book. The joke, the banter are over the place that makes me wants to skip this book so bad. I pick up this book hoping for some light rom com read. But its just not working for me.
Lately, I ends up with a not so great book. I think I am losing my touch on picking up a good book
Wow! Sylvie Stewart’s debut novel is a winner. This is a funny, and quirky romantic comedy, just right for a lazy afternoon at the pool or sunning at the beach. This is a truly down-to-Earth kind of romance, and I am glad I had an opportunity to read it. Thanks to the author for an ARC.
Laney’s life is not what she imagined. Her life took a detour after she was faced with the consequences of a one-night stand her first year of college. The result was an eighteen-year commitment, named Rocco. Although, it is one she can never regret.
While she may not love her job, she has her adorable son to light up her world. She also has her goofy brother living with her, and he loves to aggravate her. When he finally gets a job, she meets his drop-dead, awesome-looking boss. Not only does Nate re-define the word sexy, he’s a great guy and embraces her son, even willing to build Rocco an amazing treehouse.
Should she, at last, take a chance on romance with this terrific guy, or should she avoid the risk and let fear continue to rule her life?
The Fix is a well-written novel. It’s romantic comedy at its best. The pacing makes this a lightning fast read, yet it did not feel rushed at all. The dialogue zings and the characters have a good amount of depth to them. The plot is realistic and well-developed.
Laney, the heroine, is hilarious and had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion. She has grit and uses humor to combat the dull aspects of her life. Her love for her son comes through on every page. Some of her internal thoughts had me in stitches.
The hero, Nate, is yummy from Ms. Stewart's delicious description. He is an all-around good guy. Although he has a life in Austin, Texas, he is willing to up-turn his life to help out his family when his dad has a heart attack. I also loved his immediate willingness to understand that if he wants Laney, he has to accept her son.
If you enjoy a light-hearted read with strong characters, a humorous story that will put a smile on your face, then you will love The Fix. I can’t wait to read the next book in this delight series. Happy reading!
**1.5** Superficial, all fluff, no depth. No angst, which can be fine, but this didn't have the characters development to go with it. I think it could be chalked up to weak writing mostly.
The Fix was an enjoyable story and the first I read from Sylvie. I think we all need some of those once in a while. What I liked about is that is very real, in spite of being a fiction story, we have all been on that side of the spectrum when life has thrown us of balance and we have to juggle and deal with the challenges of life. Laney is such a beautiful girl who is just, to the best of her abilities, dealing with the trials and tribulations of being a single mum at the young age of 25, her son is challenging and her brother is happy just to roam around the house like the world doesn’t deserve him. Finally when he is forced to step up to the plate he lands a construction job with a company run by Nate Murphy. Nate is a confident and hardworking character, super family oriented who has moved back home to take over the company after his dad had a heart attack. As the man in charge he has to play the part and just make sure the job gets done, so when he takes on the latest job and a woman stands up as part of the neighbourhood watch he can’t seem to help gravitate towards her, even is she can make his life and choices more complicated. A feel good and heartfelt story, for those who love a HEA.
This fiction, The Fix by Sylvie Stewart, is a perfect combination of humor and romance. As a result of a one-night stand, Laney becomes pregnant even before finishing her college. Her parents support her as long as she is ready to stand on her feet again. She completes her college, gets a job and moves out to a new house. Her brother, Gavin, stays with her and helps in raising her child, Rocco. He is a carefree fellow, who finally lands a job in a construction company. His boss, Nate Murphy, did not wish to be the one managing his family business, but when his father got a heart attack, it fell upon Nate to take care of the business. His company is constructing a commercial building in the area where Laney lives. The people living in this society are not happy with this construction, and they decide to confront Nate with their concerns. However, when Laney and other women of the society talk to Nate, his response turns out quite rude. Laney and Nate find each other tremendously attractive, but the circumstances are less than favorable -- to say the least.
As a reader, I enjoyed the smooth and engaging narration of the author. Sylvie has kept the tone of the book upbeat, lively, and friendly. Even though the main theme of the story is romance, there are many other elements to keep a reader entertained. She has beautifully touched various topics, such as the importance of a father figure in a child's life, the confusing moments of a single parent while raising a child, and the requirement of love and support of a family. It was quite refreshing to read about this much variety in a romantic fiction. The last thing I wanted was a typical lovey-dovey tale, and the author did not disappoint me. I am sure that other readers would enjoy this diverse nature of the book, too. There are a few steamy scenes which would keep erotica lovers gasping for air. The best part is that the author has not over done with these scenes and these are described only where they were required.
The words that the author has chosen to describe the handsomeness of Nate have a contagious effect. I found a craving to see such an amazing looking man ;) This is the power of her writing. Her ability to sketch the characters helped me in creating a mental image of them in my head. This is very important for me to be able to connect with the characters in any book. I would give 10 on 10 to Sylvie in this area. My favorite character is Fiona, Laney's best friend. She is a quite funny creature and her "unintended" dirty dialogues were very amusing. Don't we all know at least one person who has an inherent ability to slip a few dirty remarks, unintentionally, in whatever they may say?
The humorous dialogues managed to plaster a smile on my face throughout the read. There was no dull moment in the book. Generally, romantic books tend to overdo drama and include a little bit of sob-fest. This is one attribute that I do not always find very welcoming. I was delighted to find that there was not any page-filling and brain-torturing drama of any sort. Nevertheless, the book remained full of little twists -- with an emphasis on the word 'little.'
I think the title doesn't really reflect what to expect from the book, though.
I would recommend this book to the readers who like reading a funny, steamy, and quick romantic read.
P.S. I have received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I really didn't like anything about this book. Nate, the hero was just...awful. While that isn't really a deal breaker (I mean that's almost standard now) the fact that he stayed that way and the heroine just kept falling for him really bothered me. I was looking forward to this book because I liked the idea of the hero's horrible first impression having an actual reason, everyone has shitty days that bring out the worst in them. Like Hey! I'm not an asshole, I'm just having a stressful day! kind of thing. But if 50% of the book later you're still an asshole, the problem isn't circumstance, it's you. Nate's determination to date Laney whether she wanted to date him or not wasn't handled well. Instead of coming off endearing or romantic, Nate's insistence came off more like an inability to take no for an answer, like his poor ego just couldn't understand why she wouldn't want to date him and he had to think of a way to make her do it. He was openly scheming his way into her life. Think more "If I make myself necessary in her life, she'll just have to date me" manipulation and less "She doesn't know it yet, but we're meant for each other, no one else is better than her." One is super creepy, the other, done well, can be romantic. He even went so far as to claim Laney's child was his while she wasn't there with them. It wasn't necessary and it just made me uncomfortable, especially considering that they still weren't even dating. I wasn't rooting for them to get together and wasn't invested in their romance at all. In fact, I just didn't care about any of it.
I think I read a different book thank the other 5 star readers. Four chapters in and the mc's have not met as yet and yes their is a child in he book but did the writing of to be so childish? Laney and her face rubbing just got on my nerve and reading a book and wanting to fling ny kindle across the room because of the h just does not work for me. People do not believe the 5 stars they are not telling the truth.
I completely enjoyed this book. The characters and story were great. I don't laugh out loud very often while reading but did just that, so many times. I absolutely recommend this book for anyone looking for a little drama, a little romance and a HEA!
Audio Review: The Fix (The Carolina Connections, #1) by Sylvie Stewart (Author), Alice Wander (Narrator)
Step outside of the fairytale and get a laugh out loud, ironic dose of reality. Stewart continues to make a huge impression on my audio and ereader shelves. The Fix is as sassy as it is sexy, but it also dips a toe in the world of sweetness, a time or two. Nate and Laney are determined to press each others buttons, but what happens when their hearts come out to play? With a dose of common sense and an abundance of humor, Stewart and Wander give readers a lovable, witty, romance.
Another single mom story that I thoroughly enjoyed & it also involves the need of a handyman to fix & update a recently purchased home. I liked all the characters, they were written as down to earth & I could relate to all of them. The young son (five years old) had some adjusting to a new school & new people around him, but in the end that worked out very well. (The kids always get to me & add emotion which I like). As in most books, the characters have personal issues to deal with & overcome but overall this was a nice story. A stand-alone with a HEA.
The Fix is the first book in the Carolina Connections series by Sylvie Stewart. This is the author’s debut novel and what a debut it is! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I did read the second book in this series prior to this one but I knew as soon as I finished it that I needed to go back and read book 1 - I knew I was in for a fantastic read! The author has a fantastic writing style and her storylines are great. She combines humour with real life problems along with a lot of romantic moments! There were so many laugh out loud moments in this story, many provided by Laney and her best friend Fiona. One of the things that I loved about this book was how down to earth it was including the characters in it. They were just everyday people dealing with normal, real-life issues. It was such an easy book to read with a great pace. The story is about Laney and Nate. Laney’s life hasn’t been easy; she found herself at 25, a single mom, stuck in a boring job and living with her bother who just doesn’t want to do anything! Finally her brother steps up and finds a job except Laney doesn’t realise just what might happen as a result of his new employment! Nate has returned home to take over the family business after a family emergency. When visiting a new site he doesn’t expect to be confronted by the local residents, one of which is extremely feisty and also in his eyes the most beautiful woman he has ever seen! I loved Laney – one of the best female characters I have read about this year I think! She was taking what life had given her and was determined to make the most out of it! She provided some pretty funny moments and I loved the relationship she had with her son Rocco! He also was hilarious! I could picture some of the things that happened in that household! Nate was just; well he was just hands down sexy! Not only did he sound sexy from the way he was described in the book but also the things that he did made him particularly swoon-worthy in my opinion! He was patient with Laney but also had that slight sexy alpha dominant male thing going on! I loved the relationship he formed with Rocco and that understood how important this was if he wanted to be a part of Laney’s life. I really did love this story it had everything I like in a book, humour, romance and a very sexy male lead!! I can’t wait to see what this author has in store for us next because the two books that I have read by her so far have been excellent!! If you are looking for a nice easy read, a story with lovely, relatable characters and a book full of humour and romance then I definitely recommend The Fix! You won’t be disappointed!
The Fix by Sylvie Stewart – Carolina Connections Book 1
The Fix by Sylvie Stewart is a great read. I read it in one sitting so curl up with a drink and enjoy.
Laney is a single mom who has just bought her own place after her parents decide to move away. She lives with her son Rocco who has some very strange habits and is a bit of a loner and her brother Gavin who is a bit of a freeloader following a prank that went wrong and ended his career.
Laney’s desperately trying to find a friend for Rocco following a comment from daycare without much success and when a neighbour knocks about the construction site at the end of the street she sees an opportunity for their boys to spend time together and become friends.
The only problem is that Gavin’s finally got a job and he’s going to be working on the site. A group of them visit the construction site and when Laney sees Nate its lust at first sight. Nate’s home because his dad has had a heart attack and he is looking after their construction company.
Nate and Laney spend time together – Nate does some jobs around the house and talks about building Rocco a tree house. Laney meets his parents. The only problem is that Laney thinks he’s going to go back home at some point and won’t take their relationship any further.
This is the first book in the Carolina Connections series and I can’t wait to read the next one.
"The Fix" is a witty, fun read that I would recommend to any adult who enjoys steamy romance books and a good story. This is the first romance book I've ever read, and I loved it. The author's unexpectedly honest humor made me laugh out loud while reading, which I usually never do. As a mother of three, I found this honesty refreshing and hilarious. I also liked that the story was as much about a mother and her son as it was about romance. Sylvie's writing style is professional, original, and lighthearted; I particularly liked the alternating viewpoints and the clever chapter headings, which ranged from "We've All Got Our Own Brand of Crazy" to "Life Is Good Here In The Batcave." I also found the characters - especially Laney's quirky son - fun to follow; they are all likable and well-developed, which made me eager to read more to find out what happened to them. You could easily read this whole book in a day or a weekend - it's hard to put down! - but I chose to read a chapter a day to make it last longer. I'm glad I did. I would highly recommend "The Fix" and can't wait for the second Carolina Connections book to come out!
This book had so many glowing reviews, that I decided to give it a try. It was supposed to be a laugh out loud romantic comedy. I didn't find it funny. The writing felt heavy and plodding, the dialogue did not move the plot along. The banter was not witty, and I didn't find anything worth laughing out loud at. Lainey was a snarky, sarcastic, judgememtal, immature female lead. The male lead was intrigued by her brashness and what's described as her hour glass figure. The sex scene was a snooze. The dynamics between Lainey and her brother were fraught with resentment and judgement. He went from mooching off of their parents to living and mooching off of her. Lainey has a 5 year old named Rocco that is supposed to be funny, but comes across as an undiagnosed autistic child.
Bottom line - not worth the time to read, even if it was just .99
Love love love it!!! This is a fantastic read with plenty of humor and romance. Laney has been a single mum since her son was born and she hasn't been interested in dating, her main concern is moving into her own place and providing for her son. Things change when she meets Nate, after he offers to help fix her house up she trys to keep him at arms length but he's not giving up and she can't deny the way he makes her feel. Can Laney bring herself to trust Nate with her heart? Nate is back in town to help with his father's company but he's not sure he's here to stay long term all that changes when he sets eyes on Laney. Laney is sarcastic and fiery and Nate can't keep away from her but he just needs to convince her to take a chance. The fix is a definite must read and I can't wait for the next book in the series.
This was a good little story. At least, it felt like a little story, as it was so easy to read. It is, however, a full length novel.
Dotted with humour throughout, this book touches on issues facing single parents, but does so in a light and enjoyable way. The narrative was, I felt, well paced and the characters well described and realistic.
Although occasionally the plot seemed to me to appear a little convenient, it was, nevertheless, a thoroughly entertaining, drama/tension free read.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was my first book by Sylvie & wont be my last.
You have to love when the hero (Nate) makes an ass of himself when they first meet & happens to be Heroine's (Laney) brothers boss. The connection was there from the start & seeing them pulled towards each other was beautiful to read.
If you love Bad first impressions, single mum & hot alpha then pick this one up.
This book had a great storyline but I have to say it felt alittle rushed. I like the HEA however I'm kinda wondering whatever happened to the girl from Texas in the beginning. I didnt get the picture she was a girl that would just go away. Also did they move in together and what about Gaven? I have so many unanswered questions. All in all though it wasnt bad.
(audiobook) Oh did I enjoy this one! It was funny, the characters were interesting, it was a bit sexy and the narrator was perfect. 6 hours well spent.
I seriously was smiling the whole time I was listening to this one--just because laughing out loud at work for apparently no reason would have been weird. Not much happens, to be true, and the tiny conflict in the relationship is quickly resolved, but getting inside Laney’s and Nate’s head was a fun ride. And the people around them are equally quirky and charming.
The story isn’t anything original. You get your insta-love with a bit of lust thrown in. There isn’t any reason really why Laney and Nate shouldn’t be together, but still it’s kind of a slow burn with just enough sexual tension to keep you interested.
Some interesting and important points are touched upon: what a new relationship and the possibility of its ending entails for the mother of a young child, what happens when you’re forced to give up your dream, what family means. But it’s never heavy, so don’t be afraid of drama--you won’t find it here.
Definitely a must read if you need some laugh and love!
Quickie
Series: Carolina connections #1 (but they can be read as standalone)
Not a lot of substance in this story but it’s good when you want entertainment, nothing too dark, aka a no-brainer. The banter between the characters was engaging and I loved the sibling dynamics and the 5-year-old kid!
This was a cute rom com that I really enjoyed. It was like your everyday girl meets a handsome and normal guy. I am definitely looking forward to continuing this series.
Laney is a young single mom who is also watching over her lazy brother after his dreams crashed. She is thrown when a neighborhood watch interacts with new construction but especially, Nate. He may be hot and sexy and make her want more, but she knows she needs to stay away from him because life has shown her over and over that happily ever afters are only in books and movies.
Nate is asked to come home to run the family business after his father falls ill. He is throw for a loop when confronted on one of the properties his family business is building, but he is also drawn to the sexy women yelling about the site.
Slowly the two find themselves hanging together, especially when he starts doing things within her house for her just to be around him.
I like the enemies to lovers motif but there was a lot missing for me. The connection for one. Him being the goody-goody doing things in her house trying to win her over.
