As rumors swirl about Machi trying to kill her little brother, Kakeru figures that the only person who can get the truth out of her is Yuki. But when the two of them visit her, they learn a shocking secret. Later, Motoko wants to tell Yuki her feelings before she graduates and leaves the school--and him--forever. But will their parting be such sweet sorrow?
Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月 Takaya Natsuki, real name Naka Hatake) is the penname of a Japanese manga artist best-known for creating the series Fruits Basket. She was born on July 7, 1973; (Tanabata). Takaya is left-handed and once revealed that she wanted to be a mangaka since first grade, when her sister started drawing.
She was born in Shizuoka, Japan, but was raised in Tokyo, where she made her debut in 1992. She enjoys video games such as the Final Fantasy series or Sakura Wars, or working on her different manga series, such as Fruits Basket, which is the second best-selling shōjo manga ever in Japan, and the top selling shōjo manga in North America. Fruits Basket has also been adapted into a twenty-six-episode anime series.
In 2001, Takaya received a Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo manga for Fruits Basket.
According to Takaya (in a sidebar of a Fruits Basket manga volume), she enjoys drawing girls (girly ones) more than she does boys. Takaya also enjoys electronics and music, but dislikes talking about herself. Also revealed in a sidebar of Fruits Basket, Takaya broke her drawing arm (left) after Fruits Basket volume six was published. She had to go into surgery, and as a result, had put Fruits Basket on a brief hiatus. Takaya made a full recovery, but complains that her handwriting had gotten uglier, due to the surgery. During her hospital stay, she gained an interest in baseball.
Every time I say that the former volume was a slower one I get hit with the feels in the next volume. So yeah since I said the last one was slow, I should have expected that this one would hurt again! *lol* This was already number 18 and there aren’t many volumes left. So ARGH!! It’s getting suspenseful. XD
Thoughts to the highlights of this volume:
- Machi and Yuki! <333 I love those two!!! And I ship them so damn hard! I can’t even say how much I loved it that he broke that chalk! Because damn that little gesture mean the world to Machi and me! XD
- HIRO!!! Gosh, he and Kisa grew so much! <3 I love that he’s such a great big brother and I’m so sorry what he had to go through. =(( Poor boy! He’s on the best way to be an amazing person though, so Akito didn’t break him and only made him stronger.
- Hatsuharu having a go at Akito!! I knew if anyone ever dared to take him on it would be Hatsu and damn I was right! XD I love my boy so much! He’s so fierce and protective of the ones he loves and he didn’t eve hesitate to confront Akito. If every one of the Sohma’s would be like him, Akito’s influence would have been gone a long time ago. =)
- Hatsu and Rin! <333 I love them together! They should never part and always be a couple! And if Akito isn’t okay with that he can go and be all alone! Hatsu finally carrying Rin HOME was one of the most beautiful things ever! <3
- I’m worried about Kureno now, because we all know how vicious and cruel Akito can be and he basically broke his heart. =(
- Shigure!! I really want to find out what is going on with Shigure! His role is so much more than I first thought it would be and with every volume I read, his character gets another complicated layer! Who is he even?! And even more important: DID HE REALLY MEAN WHAT HE SAID TO RIN AT THE END OF THIS VOLUME??? OMG! O_o
It has come to my attention that Fruits Basket will from this point forward... BE PISSING ME OFF TO NO END!!! OH MY GOD! I thought this one wasn't going to contain too much of the stupid but NOOOOOOOOO! I was wrong. It had stupid, i.e. Akito. That douche needs to perish! Right now! Argh! I was quite pleased with the beginning of the book. It was expanding Machi's life and what she went through. It's a bit... sad... as is eveyone's life in this manga... but it was good seeing that she had more of a purpose and does she have a purpose! *Smirks* Not going to tell of course but I'm sure you can figure it out~ So, yeah! I was enjoying myself until I got to the retarded parts! >_< Then, to top it all off, it ends on a sad note! Yeah, there's no happy ending to this volume! It's meant to tear your heart apart! All into tiny little pieces! *Sniffs* I can't believe that things are looking hopeless! Of course! I'm still praying things go well but... WAH! It's just too much to bare! (Suck it up, you big baby!) Where the hell did you come from? (...) ...I'm going mental, aren't I? *Sighs* Well, I still have some hope. I really want this all to end happily... BECAUSE I'M GOING TO BE SO PISSED OFF IF IT'S NOT!!!
My word... how else can I explain Takaya-sensei's pure awesomness? I feel that whenever I get to this part of my review, I'm saying the same thing over and over again. But it's the truth! I can't just not say how epic she is! It's just... not right for me to just say, "Oh... she did great." And then just end it there! What kind of fan would I be if I did that!? A lousy one, that's what! Know this, dear readers, that she doesn't shield people from anything. She will let you have it. You know how many times this woman broke my heart from just reading this series? I lost count! Oh, but she can make you feel healed again... the romance she writes... it's absolutely wonderful! I feel like falling in love just so I can feel that flutteriness people feel when they are in love. Then I think about all the jerks that are in this world and I'm happy I'm a free bird again! XD (...cat lady.) SHUT UP! I LOVE KYO! *Ahem* Anyway, truly amazing this manga is. I cannot wait to pick up the next volume!
But wait! I need to talk about the characters for this volume! XD We start off with Machi! We get to see how she's been feeling and why she was acting strange all this time. It's not her fault... it's those evil parents! Man, all the parents in this manga are screwed up in the head. (Well, not all. Hiro's parents are awesome. And so are Kagura's. And Tohru's. AND WE CAN'T FORGET SHISHOU!!! But yeah... after them... NO ONE!!!) Machi's parents are no different. They are a bunch of douches. >_< Yuki was there to help her along, though. I am actually kinda liking how these two get along. Machi is so quiet most of the time but when she gets upset... BOOM! WAR ZONE!!! XD We then move onto Minagawa and the conclusion of her story. (At least it felt like the end.) Minagawa really got on my nerves when she first appeared in the series but then... after reading this... I was actually shocked. She grew up. She really did. I guess she had to since graduation and all that... but I was really pleased to see how she grew! She's not as annoying anymore! How rare is that!? Also, she has herself an admirer. *Snickers*
Now for the stupid... Ugh... I can't stand Akito... I really thought that I would come to understand at least a little bit of what he's doing but... I don't. I really don't. He's just scum to me. Ren, his bloody mother (I figured since it was revealed in the last volume who she was and you're reading this review it's okay to say who she is now), is also a douche. I'll admit that I like her a bit better than Akito, but I still hate her guts. She does something to Rin that just upsets me! How in the hell did Shigure ever end up with her (Also okay to say since it was revealed in the previous volume)? Just the whole thing rubs me the wrong way. -_-" Kureno... well, he's not as agravating. I like him... I just want him to grow a spine. However, I think he did, a little, in this book! He was acting pretty awesomely. Haru... WAS THE BEST DAMN THING EVER! Holy crap! I've seen him get pissed before but not like this! Oh snap! That was sexy! He's such a man! I wants him! Man, Rin is such a lucky lady! *Smiles but has it slowly turn into a frown* She went through a lot... so much pain. Her hair... *Sniffs* ...at least she had Haru. God, she's lucky! *Flails* Hiro was being cute with Hinata and Kisa. So cute! <3 Tohru... *Sighs* ...I don't want him to go either... KYO!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!! MAKE BABIES WITH TOHRU!!! IT'S GOING TO BE AWESOME!!! *Gets scratch* Okay! Okay! No more of the babies! I got it... though, it's something to consider... *Gets spleen cut out* X_X
Well, this volume didn't make me as mad as the previous one but... it still pisses me off. All in a good way of course! XD I live for this sort of drama! Being pissed off is something that... I don't know... it pleases me and this manga does it so well! I really do think this is THE best shoujo manga I have ever read. When reading, you just get sucked into this crazy world filled with so many tragic characters and problems and characters you just want to kill! *CoughAkitoCough* (What about Ren?) Well, if she continues down the path she's going then yeah. I'll want to kill her, too. For now... I'll just shove her in the dungeon. (You have a--) Silence, mortal! I'm reviewing! *Ahem* As I was saying, you get pulled into the story and you just have to keep reading until you find out what happens! It's the main reason why I have been reading this nonstop for the past few weeks! I can't think of myself reading anything else until I finish this series. And I'm almost done! Just five more to go! I cannot wait to start the next one! I feel that things are just going to get more crazy! I am so excited! Come on! Read it together with me and fangirl like no tomorrow! But! I claim Haru, Hatori, and Kyo for myself. You can have the others! XD Mata ne! <3
Ah, Rin and Haru continue to be my top favourite couple in this manga. I'm so happy Haru finally lost his shit and decided to do something about the constant abuse Rin was being put through. Also, I'm so glad Tohru finally admitted to herself that she really does live Kyou! It took a long time but I'm happy we finally made some progress. Now if only these idiots would confess to each other!
Another happy highlight was looking at my babies growing up! Momiji and Hiro look so grown up I cry thinking about it!
4.5 🌟 Me encanta ver como se quieren y cuidan los 12 del zodiaco. Pero podemos hablar de cómo Hatsuharu es el más amable siempre está cuidando de todos, necesito abrazarlo lo adoro!
Technically, I love pasts where the past does affect who the character is. The character isn't just THERE the way they are just because. There's a reason they act how they act and do what they do.
Machi's fear of perfection was a really original idea. It's sorta interesting how it's strong enough to freak her out even if it's just a field of perfectly non-driven snow and a brand new box of chalk. (And those things are relatively harmless.)
The kind of fears that bring an unwanted past back into the mind tend to be the ones that make up a pretty good story. It's also pretty realistic, and it's totally, highly, absolutely, positively original. Sure, fears of spiders are one thing (y'know, if it's because they have too many legs and they're kind of creepy because they crawl around and have a bunch of eyes), but a fear of perfection, like the one Machi has, is a different thing. It's not usual to be afraid of something like that, but she's afraid in a way where people can't exactly infer why she's afraid right away. If someone's afraid of spiders, you can infer why, right?
I'm afraid of walking against walls. You might think that's weird, and it is. I mean walls can be relatively harmless. Well, unless you're walking down a very narrow hallway where the walls are slowly...closing in... OR unless you're pushed into a wall. When I was in the 8th grade, the guy I liked lied to be about something and I had to know why! Lying is mean, rude, and it makes me feel stupid because I believed it, right? So I went after him. He TRIED to run away, but I'm so ninjetic that I wouldn't let him go! I grabbed onto his shirt. And...you know the sound a shirt makes when you tug on it hard enough and something snaps? Like...a rip? Well, that happened to his shirt. I sincerely, absolutely, positively DID NOT mean to pull on his shirt like that. I started apologizing right away. And then his elbow shoved against my stomach, and that made me lunge against the stucko (SOMEWHAT SPIKY) wall that was about a foot beside me. I SAW his face. He had never made that face before. It was horrifying. He WANTED to push me into the wall. My head hit the wall and my vision went blank.
Do you know how painful it is to like someone, and to have that someone lie to you? And when you go after that someone, do you know how painful it is to have that someone (that you like) shove you into a wall? It hurt not only on the outside, but deep deep deep down on the inside of my SOUL!
Anyway, when I got up, I was on the concrete floor, lying there face down. There was this huge crowd around me. The guy who had pushed me into the wall stood in front of the crowd. I just want to say that my head and my stomach really hurt.
So when I'm walking against the wall, I'm not afraid of the WALL. I'm afraid of being reminded of being pushed into it by the person I liked. That's kind of like Machi's situation. She's not afraid of the perfect box of chalk or the perfect field of snow. She's afraid of the memories that comes with those things.
GAAAAAAAAAAH! It's so original for the author to think of something like that! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH--
Anyway, Tohru and Kyou don't show up in a HUUUUGE majority of this book. The first part is on Yuki and Machi, the second is on Rin and Haru. I can't understand Rin and Haru's relationship (since I didn't exactly have volume 17 on hand today) because I have no idea what had happened. Um...Rin...cut her hair.
IT MAKES HER LOOK OLDER!
Anyway, yeeees!!! ANOTHER INSTALLMENT OF FURUBA! FOUR STARS!
Machi the wallflower finally made it to the spotlight. I didn’t think much about her and Kakeru since their chapters are mostly for the reader’s amusement, a reliever after getting through the heavier parts of the past volumes.
That is, until now. After the revelation about what her life is like outside school, it’s clearer why she acts the way she does on a daily basis.
I can only imagine how difficult it was for Machi to endure such hardships, not to mention the pressure she went through just so she could keep up with others.
I’ve always thought her as someone who prefers isolation than spend time on a crowd of people, which isn’t a lot different from being alone, especially if you happen to be bad at socializing like Machi.
Because of this, I don’t blame Machi for beating herself up for failing to reach everyone’s expectations, as that’s what she’s been taught to do since childhood.
At the same time, I’m left frustrated about her past. After all, no matter what the circumstances are, no child deserves to be treated worthlessly just because they happen to be capable of meeting someone’s standards only to a certain level.
It’s interesting to see the world in Machi’s view as this made readers understand her better. Not only would one learn to sympathize with her woes, a person would eventually realize that not being seen for who you truly are doesn’t make you any less of a human being. Tohru’s riceball analogy from volume 3 comes in handy towards this situation.
As for the other story still associated with the main plot, we’re back with Hatsuharu and Rin’s relationship. Akito’s Messianic complex must be stopped as she would go through harsh measures just so her plans of wouldn’t be disrupted.
Everybody’s familiar with Akito’s antics by now. She even dare to play the victim after all this time. When you think about it, seems like everyone who did their children wrong are the ones guilty of doing this.
The readers are still left in the dark regarding how to lift the curse as Kureno’s miraculous cure from it remains a mystery though.
Yuki is awesome in here. I love how he totally understood Machi... He might have been the only one to do so. Even Kakeru didn't seem to understand her (he just knows she needs someone). That little thing with the chalk really got me because it was so sweet. It's small gestures like that that really warm the hearts of others.
Matoko surprised me... But in a good way. I'm glad she didn't try to force herself or her feelings onto Yuki. That part where the camaraderie between the members of the Yuki Fan Club was nice too. (Even if they did bond together over something like this...)
Aww, Hiro and his little sister are just so cute. He'll definitely be a great big brother to her.
Kureno! Someone give that guy a big hug! I love how he knows right and wrong and isn't just . (Now, Kureno, stop giving into Akito's whims... That'll just make Akito worse.)
We see a revival of Haru here. SO. BADASS. It's okay Haru, everyone can be selfish once in a while. Kyo said so! :P I really envy his love for Rin and vice versa. They both love each other so much that they're willing to go to any lengths for the other. Yes, it's potentially destructive, but so long as nothing bad happens, it will bloom into the most beautiful kind of love.
Somehow, Rin's new hair makes her feel different. Like she changed a little along with her physical appearance. (And her outfit at the end of the volume... So un-Rin. Maybe it's not just the hair, huh?) Rin kind of reminds me of Kagura with the awkward way of expressing affection... It's sweet to see how much she cares for Tohru and vice versa. And I'm surprised she hasn't told Rin about what she learned from Kureno... Or maybe that'll be in volume 19. Hmm.
Oh, Ren. You're so despicable. I don't exactly hate Ren more than Akito, but whereas I have a tiny sliver of pity for the latter, Ren evokes no such feeling from me. Someone needs to put that woman in her place. ASAP.
I love the ending with Tohru. Yes girl, you've grown a spine! (Well, she's not exactly spineless but definitely not a strong female character.) That was the issue I had with Tohru, but now it seems like she's going to rectify that and enter my favorite characters book. Yay!
A small shout-out to Shigure. I can't be the only one who likes to see him in that kind of outfit, right?!
Yuki and Machi are totally precious. I was hoping he would find someone since Tohru is so obviously attached to Kyo. He finds out that Machi can't handle perfection. That's why she's been trashing rooms and messing things up. The cutest part is when they're sitting next to each other in a meeting and someone sets down a brand new box of chalk. She looks at it nervously and he just reaches over and breaks a piece to ease her mind. It's so sweet!
The chapter with Motoko is short, but cute. She doesn't try to make him love her. She just tells him she's glad she met him and hopes he'll have a good life.
The rest of the volume is exactly the kind of thing I love. Craziness. Rin has disappeared and no one can find her. Come to find out, Akito is behind it. Some stuff went down and caused Akito to hurt Rin. I'm not going to go into details about it. The important thing is that Haru finds out about it and he is pissed. I was so pumped! I couldn't wait for someone to finally stand up to Akito. He doesn't get very far because others intervene in his mission to beat Akito's face in. I'm not sure things are resolved with that struggle though. Something bad is bound to happen between Akito and one of the zodiac eventually.
Later, in a discussion about breaking the curse Tohru kind of drops the bomb that she's in love with Kyo. Well, she makes it obvious that she's concerned about him, which is the same thing. Shigure thinks the curse will break eventually, but that's not enough to save Kyo so we're back at square one: still searching for a way that they can be together. I'm so excited about where this series is going right now. More, please!
Plot things are coming thick and fast! Stuff is really starting to happen like crazy now, and all kinds of secrets and conspiracies and deceptions are being revealed.
Kyo has a beautiful moment of connection with Machi. I think those two might be friends after all! Emotional stuff being brought up, and I'm so surprised and touched by Machi's story. She's really a lovely person!
It's nearing the end of the school year, so all the upperclassmen are saying goodbye, and Yuki gets caught in the middle of several romantic goodbyes with fangirls that he would rather have avoided. Hilariously funny!
Hatsuharu is determined to protect his beloved Isuzu/ "Rin", but she is just as determined to get herself into trouble sneaking around the Sohma estate looking for a way to break the curse. She gets involved with the wrong people, and ends up in a bad place, injured and sick, until an unlikely person rescues her. Rin is so amazing, and I adore her character! She's a difficult character to understand, but her mystery just makes her more interesting.
Shigure reveals what he knows about the Sohma curse, and Rin is satisfied, but Tohru gets upset, and worries that the curse will not be broken after all, at least not in time to save Kyo. Sweet Tohru, she's always focused on helping everyone! The suspense is getting pretty intense here!
Okay now I am getting into the romance between Yuki and Machii. I still wasn’t sure of them as a park but after this I am for it. Again a wonderful volume filled with drama and I’m loving it! Especially that ending to this volume!
chapter 102: “why did you say those things back there? am i boring? but i’m exactly what you told me to be. i did everything for you, mother” JUST RIP MY HEART OUT ALREADY😭 i just hate Machi’s parents with a fucking passion. she did everything her mother wanted and it still wasn’t enough smh AND THE WAY HER MOM GASLIT HER UGH i also just love how Machi feels comfortable enough around Yuki to open up. i ship them so much😭🖤 Yuki praising Machi is everything. he took a page out of Tohru’s handbook and said exactly what she needed to hear😭🖤 and the way Machi finally tells someone the truth about her little brother and it’s Yuki😭😭😭😭 THEY ARE SUCH A BEAUTIFUL COUPLE I CAN’T THERE IT IS AHHHH ONE OF MY FAVORITE MACHI AND YUKI SCENES WHEN HE BREAKS THE CHALK FOR HER😭😭🖤
chapter 103: i did not care about the Senpai girl into Yuki or Nao being into her😂 HIRO’S MOM IS SO PRECIOUS BYE😭🖤 fuck me i forgot Akito did that to Rin… and i’m supposed to accept her fucking redemption arc??? nah fuck that shit
chapter 104: can’t tell me that Hiro’s family isn’t the fucking best😭 his mom? perfect. his dad? though we never see him, perfect. Hiro? PERFECT (even though he’s a brat lmao). Hinata? PERFECT (she’s so cute) Haru and Rin are suffering so much it hurts😭 FINALLY HARU KNOWS ABOUT WHAT AKITO DID AHHHHHH BEAT HER ASS THE TRUTH IS FINALLY COMING OUT😭 Hiro has been holding onto too much, poor boy ): same with Rin💔 not me crying with Kisa😭 also although i’m not a big fan of Kureno i’m so glad he saved Rin😭🖤 maybe he’ll finally open his eyes to the bitch that Akito is DARK HARU IS HEREEEEEE
chapter 105: Kureno stop being gentle with Akito and send her shitty ass to jail pls wtf honestly Haru should’ve killed her or at least punched her because what she did PHEW✋🏻 i love dark Haru🥰 i find it really funny that Akito is shook that Haru’s mad at her for almost killing his girlfriend😭😂 Akito, you fucking psychopath, just cause you were born to be loved doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want without consequences. fall off a cliff girlie
chapter 106: okay but that old hag that supports Akito needs to die because what the actual fuck. how the fuck is she siding with Akito and taking Kureno how could he take Rin out of there?? nah she can catch these hands too🤺 Rin owns my whole heart. i hate that she feels useless, i hate that she burdens herself with all of it💔 Haru and Rin are so beautiful together😭🖤 this is my favorite scene of them, when he carries her and asks her to let him carry her when she can’t walk on their own. their love story is so perfect😭🖤
chapter 107: Rin and Tohru’s friendship is so precious😂🖤 WE DO NOT DESERVE SHISHOU HE IS SO FUCKING WHOLESOME I CAN’T😭😭😭 nervous Rin is so cute😭🖤 Tohru is slowly admitting to herself that Kyo is the one she truly loves, the main reason she wants to break the curse BECAUSE SHE DOESN’T WANT TO BE SEPARATED FROM HIM

Fruits Basket, Vol. 18 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next six chapters (102–107) of the on-going manga series.
Yuki Sohma realizes Machi Kuragi cannot stand orderliness, because of the pressure to be perfect when her mother was competing with Kakeru Manabe's. At the next student council meeting, he breaks a piece in a new box of chalk, so that she does not have to wreck it.
On her graduation day, the president of Yuki's fan club confesses her feelings to him and wishes him happiness. Tohru Honda decides to talk to Rin Sohma about Kureno Sohma and the curse, but cannot find her — nor can anyone else.
Hiro Sohma apologizes to Kisa Sohma for admitting to Akito Sohma he liked her, which led Akito beating her up, and tells Hatsuharu Sohma that he witnessed Akito pushing Rin out a window, the first time she was hospitalized.
Hatsuharu realizes Rin broke up with him to protect him. During this conversation, Kureno is shown finding Rin confined in the cat's room. Hatsuharu angrily confronts Akito, who first denies any knowledge. When Kureno tells them Rin has been sent to the hospital, Akito denies it was wrong because Rin, as a zodiac animal, had defied him.
Dreaming in the hospital, Rin remembers Ren Sohma promising to tell her how to break the curse if she stole a black box from Akito, but Akito caught Rin in the act and imprisoned her. Rin dreams of getting back together with Hatsuharu and wakes up to him finding her on the sidewalk outside the hospital. Rin moves into Kazuma's house to recuperate.
Shigure Sohma visits her and tells her Ren was lying about knowing how to break the curse, but it does not matter as it will eventually break, now that the zodiac animals are for once all alive together. Tohru Honda overhears this and demands to know how soon, because it has to be before next spring, finally admitting the one she most wants to save is Kyo Sohma.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Natsuki Takaya. For the most part, I really liked the direction of the narrative. The story about breaking the Zodiac Curse, which seemed adorable at first, has became rather dark as storylines and coming together. It seems that the narrative is heading into a particular direction of Tohru Honda breaking or being instrumental in ending the Zodiac Curse.
All in all, Fruits Basket, Vol. 18 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

It's only been a few pages, not even an entire volume but we finally find out where Rin has been in the earlier part of this one and like I warned in my volume 17 review - it is not nice. Trigger warning for... attempted murder? Again...
A few times now in my 2024 reviews I have commented on how conflicted I am with Akito's character. The fact that their mother basically deliberately mis-genders them for their entire life, forces others to do the same, is clearly insane... it explains a lot. BUT just because I get it does NOT EXCUSE AKITO'S ACTIONS. Pushing someone out of a window is damn well attempted murder. Locking someone in a windowless room after, what appears to be, physical abuse may not be attempted murder but it is GBH at the least. It's no wonder Haru goes dark over this, and honestly it's less than Akito deserves. I will say, that on this read through I read this and thought "yeah fine Hiro, I get your behaviour now" because seeing someone try and kill someone else... I get why you'd maybe act a bit weird because of it.
I also REALLY dislike Shigure, Kureno, Ayaame and Hatori for this - Ritsu gets a pass because they say they are younger than the others, but those four THEY SHOULD KNOW BETTER. I don't care how much of a bond they have, it's still wrong. Also, again, I really hope that old maid is fired at the end of this series because she is 1000000% an enabler.
Outside of the Akito/Rin mess - Tohru has finally admitted to herself that she cares for Kyo. It's taken her long enough but I 100% get why it did. But when you add that to the Haru/Rin elements, this is SUCH a good volume!
