A KIDNAPPING WITH TIME RUNNING OUT... For Honolulu P.D. homicide detective Jon Stanton, the body of a young boy discovered in the bushes of an upscale neighborhood is more than just another homicide. This one is personal. The boy was eleven years old and a witness to the kidnapping of a wealthy housewife and her daughter. Stanton believes them to still be alive, but held by a host of desperate, unstable men. Men willing to kill children to achieve their ends. Stanton and his new partner, the seductive and alluring niece of his boss, search from the seedy bars in Honolulu's Chinatown, to the homes of those that buy and sell flesh like cattle, and Stanton's wits will once again be tested to their limits. Ultimately, Stanton will have to make the choice between justice and the law as he tracks down a perpetrator whose identity will shock him. This did not feel like a Jon Stanton mystery to me. In fact, there is no mystery. No twisted bad guy. Simply a kidnapping of a woman, instigated by her husband and perpetrated by a trio of thugs with much violence thrown in. A lot of it isn't terribly realistic. I'm finding Stanton more irritating with each book. Early in series he never had any female companionship, now he appears to have choices. Yet his out dated views prevent any connections. Get real. This psychic business is getting a drag too. He either is or isn't but get on with it. The constant psychiatry visits don't sit well with me either given how perceptive he is with everyone else. I've read all series back-to-back so far so maybe I'm getting a little Stantoned-out. They're all good but this can't be considered as one of the best
Once again Mr. Methos writes a very entertaining novel with fully fleshed-out characters and believable storylines. I'm now on to the next Detective John Stanton book (#9). Stanton's complexity has grown substantially over the life of the series as his inner demons and wrecked family life fight with his strong Mormon beliefs. Add to that his insights into both himself and his cases based on his education (he holds a PhD in psychology) and you have a pretty unusual lead character. If you like procedurals and private-eye novels, you will enjoy this one. Better to have read up to this one with the prior stories, but not necessary as Methos slices in background quite seamlessly.
'"Know that God loves us and remember that if you stare too long into the abyss, the abyss will stare back into you."'
I feel like Methos writing style gets better with each book in this series! I enjoyed the characters in this one, and reading from the criminal's perspective while the crime took place was a different approach. That was really entertaining for me, as the reader. The biggest takeaway from this story... Don't do drugs! Specifically: LSD. Geesh, that sounds like one terrifying experience.
MOST important , however, were the psychological analyses of the psyches, the products of our defective DNA. Such understanding of mankind's inherent evil can come only by those personally victmized by it, and those who are insightful enough to know they have seen EVIL. Such a LONELY path fornus. Our only solace, other wounded healers
I'm sorry to say that I think all the books in the series that I have read are just so weak. I started reading the 1st because it was just there. Easy. And by the time I realized that I didn't really like the lead character, and most of the story lines I was into the 4th or fifth book. Now, as stupid as it sounds I feel like I've invested so much time that I have to finish the series. I feel sorry for the Author who wrote them. How could the masses gobble up such crap.
That's a good thing. Only He can do it right and suffer no repercussions. Stanton thinks maybe that's why he is a cop. To find justice for crime victims. It can't be found in this life. This is another riveting story but one I had to lay down to catch my breath from gasping ... and. I admit, swearing. Stanton wouldn't approve.
I really enjoy reading books written by Victor Methos, but I was disappointed with this one. To me it just didn't feel the same. There was something missing. I usually get a pleasant feeling after reading one of his books, like an enjoyment, but I didn't feel that at all. Hope the next one will be better.
Here I am again finishing up another Victor Methos book at 2AM. I need to start reading earlier in the day because I simply can't stop until the story ends when I read Mr. Methos's books.
I enjoyed this book and as most of these books are I was scared most of the time. It is so easy to put yourself in the shoes of these people and that is not good.
If in the place of these victims. Could be anybody. Good book and now onto the next in the series.
Although I enjoy reading about Jon Stanton and his adventures, I felt this book had a little too much technical talk that wasn’t necessary for me to understand. I will continue reading this saga to find out what happens next.
This was an intriguing story that you definitely won't want to miss. It's a great addition to this fantastic series. I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.
This writer is another one of my favorites, he can keep me reading for hours ! Job Stanton is my hero always out to get the bad guys! The wife was a dirt bath but I am had the husband got his dos!
I've been reading Victor Methos books for a long time. I love him story lines, and John Stanton is my favorite detective. I found this book to be one of his best... A real page turner!
Enough mystery to keep the reader turning the pages to learn what happens next. I enjoyed it and I'm ready for the next book in the Jon Stanton series.
