Hi Cintia,

Thank you so much for asking this question. Inspiration is one of the most important parts of story writing, because, as you say, you can't write without it. (Or can you?) For inspiration, I collect small ideas that I piece together into bigger ideas. I might visit a place that I think would make a good setting, and I combine that with a situation I read about in the paper and person that I meet (and then fictionalise!) I'm also always thinking about the audience that I want to write for and what they would want to read about, and I try not to concern myself with the latest genre craze. Because I write for teenagers I often think about what I loved to read when I was that age.

While you're waiting for inspiration to strike (and keeping a journal with all your little ideas to combine into bigger ones) you might like to try writing exercises every other day, or keeping a personal diary or blog. If you keep your fingers and your mind focused on writing then you'll be in the habit of writing when your inspiration comes. Don't wait for the inspiration. Writing is about 80% habit.

Thanks,
Rhiannon(less)

“It was strapless, the bodice peacock-blue and edged in gold, full skirted at the front and gathered into an elaborate, foaming bustle of satin and peacock feathers at the back. I insisted that every inch of bare skin was powdered with gold: my shoulders, décolletage, and the lower part of my face. The golden mask would cover my eye, and my lips were painted with more gold. I carried a golden fan that, when it was opened, revealed hundreds of eyes and looked exactly like a peacock's tail.”
Rhiannon Hart, Blood Song

“To be wounded or die at the hands of one who is meant to love you. Is there a more miserable thing in the world?”

“You're doing well, you know," Rodden said.
I snorted. He'd not even broken a sweat and I was about to become the first girl to drown on dry land.”
