Well hello, sir! I thank you very much for the compliment, given the success of "Benjamin Ashwood"!

I won't lie, I love and am super proud of Raz, and his creation and inspiration actually runs pretty deep. His physique and skillset are a combination of TES argonian, Kylar Stern of Brent Week's series "The Night Angel Trilogy", and Tiger from Jennifer Roberson's "Novels of Tiger and Del". His psychology, though, is a bit more complex:

Essentially, Raz is a manifestation of some struggles I had growing up. Nothing horrible or dramatic, mind you. I have a wonderful family, but by no fault of theirs I was raised in place where I was very much on "the outside" while almost everyone I knew was on "the inside". Raz essentially grew from that, demonstrating that a kind soul can be more human than actual humans, even if the vessel itself is not. I sorta wanted to create a character that could have stood in front of me as a kid, pointed to himself, and said "You can prove them wrong, too."

Wow... that got deeper than I thought. Thanks for the question!(less)

"words fail me

When compared with other books of this genre, these books are exceptional. I was hooked at book 1 and this book kept me hooked from page 1 until the last sentence. Craftsmanship like this is rare. I am in awe and now suspense, I guess…. " Read more of this review »

What a ride, one of those books you disappear into forgetting the real world. Machinations, fighting, friendship, and more information about the looming threat. I can't wait for the next one!"

“My reason, Raz i’Syul Arro, is that if you struck out to eliminate every person who has ever made poor decisions in their life, you would find yourself alone in an empty world when you were done, with your blade at your own throat.”
Bryce O'Connor, The Warring Son

“The desire for change is enacted by change, not by a lack of it. When things shift, there is a natural outcry, a desire for a shift back. Sometimes this is a positive reaction, sometimes not. Regardless, once that shift becomes the new normal, that desire to effect dissipates and is eventually forgotten.”
Bryce O'Connor, The Warring Son

“Did you think you were going to drift through life on talent and hard work? Get up. You’re hardly a failure. You only get to think that of yourself when you stop trying to win.”
Bryce O'Connor, Iron Prince

“Even in death, some souls leave an intangible mark on the world. It is impossible not to feel them there, feel their presence just beyond the veil that separates the living from those already risen into the arms of the Lifegiver. Though I pray the loved ones I’ve lost have long since returned to the world in Laor’s infinite circle of rebirth, I cannot help but feel that some part of each of them remains yet with me, suspended between this old life I was a part of and the new one they must now enjoy. It is painful to feel that presence and the constant reminder it bears to mind, and yet it is simultaneously wondrously consoling to know that they are—even in some small way—still there to watch over and guide me…” —”

“[Lying is] a betrayal to one's self. It's evidence of self-loathing. When you are so ashamed of your actions, thoughts, or intentions, you lie rather than accepting yourself for who you really are... The idea of how others see you becomes more important than the reality of you.”
