ANNUAL REBIRTHS TO END THE EMPIRE
PilinyTheYounger / Mercury
DETAIL
I didn't want things to end like this.
She said, looking around. Sitting on a rock, the only spot that wasn't caked with blood. The empire was destroyed. Plagues, cross-empire wars, nothing was left. Not a bird in sight, much less another human. Even God had abandoned the once-glorious place. If god was ever with them in the first place. The empire she had tried too hard to protect, stepped on by another instead? She clenched her fists. This isn't the end. She thought.
Suddenly, her head jolted up as voices echoed. They only said a few things, as if time was short.
Your curse is to undo what was written on paper. Nothing more, nothing less.
She smiled. Yes, the curse. The curse would save her.
What is your purpose, child?
asked the voices. Whispering tantalizingly in her ear. Tempting her.
Like you said, I need to undo what was written on paper. I'll burn that godforsaken empire to the ground instead of this one. So send me back. For a second chance.
She paused to add another line.
Or, actually, maybe more than one. Just until I get it right.

PROLOGUE - SHE PROTECC, she attacc, but more importantly she gives the angels a smacc
I had messed everything up. But not for the first time. For the 300th time. Probably more than 300 now, just that I had stopped counting. Every year, I was thrown into the body of a new person. Not by choice, of course, but because it was my curse. To undo what was written on paper. To undo what was coming. I ducked under a flaming royal flag, my fingers gripping the charred ruins of what used to be a cottage for balance. The roof had collapsed, and the walls were torn down and bricks were strewn all over the place. A rocking wheel sat in the corner, one leg broken and the others splattered with dried blood. More furniture, and somebody's shoes.
Im sorry I failed you,
I said quietly, in a whisper. Even though no one could hear me. Somewhere, a flock of birds flew, screeching, off a tree. Startled. But I didn't make a loud noise. Someone, or, rather, something else had. My fingers slid off the wood a bit of charcoal staining them. Ah well. I grabbed my sword and looked up.
The descendant of the angels. Huge monsters glared at me, large, electric blue eyes circled by feathers and wings. Divine creatures. I held up my sword, but the angels weren't interested in fighting. They knew I was going to lose anyway. Human. We can give you all you want.
The angel said. I had no idea where the booming noise was coming from, but I felt small compared to it. So small, like a speck of dust floating in a hurricane.
We will turn back the time for you. Your dead parents. Your siblings, that you were forced to kill. Your friends who abandoned you. All those people you could have saved. They will all be united until a peaceful empire, of which you will be the ruler.
The angel said, feathers rustling gently. We'll take you back to earth. Your original timeline. Everything will be perfect.
Everything I ever lost? At once a thousand things crawled into my head and started twerking, demanding attention. My family? The portrait I always kept in my room, of my dead siblings and parents? No longer a portrait, but a living and breathing thing? My sword wavered slightly, just a few degrees lower. The large blue eye was studying me carefully. Analyzing my actions.
Say yes, I thought.
Why would I say no?
Say yes to the shining future.
It's so bright.
And right in front of me.
Don't say no.
Just nod, and put down that sword.
Erica! What are you doing?
Say yes!
Say yes!
I looked straight into the blue eye and said, No.
CHAPTER ONE - Plastic surgery with sinisterly sharp eyebrow clippers
Ah, great. I guess I died to the Angels again? And everyone else probably did too. After reincarnating 300+ times, it was getting old. Why these loops?! Just stop at 100! really, it was enough!
I woke up in someone else's bed. Long, straight brown hair. Milky pale skin. A warm, polished room. Gold all over. Gems too. Decorated with gold tiles, intricate murals of cupids, and even a detailed glass skyroof so that I could see. The blankets were warm and fuzzy under my manicured fingers. Oooh. Who'd I get this time? A noble?
I said, admiring my delicate, polished fingers, but not giving a single glance to the cupid on the wall. My palms were so soft they felt like silk. Not a day of hard work in her life. After multiple years of reincarnating as dirt-poor people, I was ready for this! Ah, but a noble? My etiquette was rusty as hell. Hopefully you'll have enough muscle memory to carry a noob like me, darling,
I said to myself. With a rustle of soft cotton, I stepped out of the bed and onto the floor, which was equally polished. Smooth oak. Nice.
I looked at the three-way mirror, then the large vanity desk. Straight brown hair, beautiful crystal blue eyes, pale skin, high
