    The Guardians - Kenneth Sandoval

    CHAPTER 1

Eugene had just dismissed his last class of the day and the school year. He was relieved that his first year as a professor had ended with such ease.

Eugene drove home contemplating spending yet another night alone in his home-based laboratory. He had converted the basement of his house into a laboratory which he used for personal experiments. His latest experiment was a drug which could extend a person's life for an additional fifty to seventy-five years.

When Eugene arrived home, he did his usual...grabbed a frozen dinner out of the freezer, popped it in the microwave and headed upstairs to change into a pair of green scrubs. Once Eugene was changed, he grabbed his lab coat and dinner and headed down to the basement, to his lab.

Eugene turned all his equipment on and while it was warming up, he sat at his desk eating his dinner and reading his notes from the night before. While he was eating, he felt the foundation of his house shift slightly. He thought that he had just felt a slight tremor. Until suddenly he was surrounded by white light so bright, he had to close his eyes. When he opened his eyes, he was no longer in his lab, he was in a strange room he had never seen before. He looked around and started trying to figure out what had just happened, surveying the room carefully for clues. The only thing in the room was a medium sized conference table with four chairs, three on one side and one on the side he was standing on now. His mind immediately started going over what had just happened to him. He began to move toward the door when it opened and in walked the most beautiful woman Eugene had ever seen. She had long wavy auburn hair and the most intense green eyes he had ever seen, plus she had the body of a goddess.

She was draped in a white toga like the Venus de Milo statue.

Eugene said, Who are you? Where am I? How did I get here? What is...? Before he could continue the woman spoke in a soft and sultry voice saying, My name is Alexis, and I am for you.

Eugene looked at her with so many questions in his eyes. He thought to himself, What does she mean she is for me? As his mind raced trying to make sense of what was happening, Alexis spoke again. Her voice was that of an angel, he thought to himself. She said, Eugene, my makers want to speak to you, but they do not wish to frighten you needlessly. They are not like us; their appearance is vastly different. They would like to know if you are willing to speak to them directly or would you feel more comfortable speaking with me as a mediator?"

Eugene looked at her for a moment and then said, Your makers? Are you speaking with them now in your mind?

Alexis answered by saying, Yes, I am telepathically linked with the hive mind.

Eugene said, I wish to speak with your makers directly.

As his words were spoken the door opened again and this time two clammy gray skinned creatures entered. Their skulls were larger than a human skull which is what Eugene thought explained the telepathy. Eugene assumed they were male, they were dressed exactly as he was, green scrubs and lab coats. They had no visible hair and from what he could tell had no breasts, but he thought this species was androgynous.

The taller of the two creatures spoke in a high-pitched voice, which deepened as he spoke. Eugene guessed that this species did not use their voice box very often. The creature said, "My name is Lovus, and we are guardians. My species of people are the guardians of this sector of space known to you as the Milky Way galaxy. It has been our destiny for millennia to keep this system safe from harm. We have watched Earth for some years in hopes that humanity would evolve beyond the infancy that humanity is stuck in. Until now we have allowed time for evolution to help humanity to see its mistakes and correct them. However, the time for that has passed. Humanity no longer poses a threat to only Earth but to this entire galaxy.

We, the Guardians, cannot allow humanity to survive and destroy what it has taken countless other species millennia to build. Eugene, it has been decided that we will destroy humanity to preserve billions of other species that share this galaxy. As we said, we have watched your species develop over the past few thousand years. We have been particularly impressed with your personal evolution."

The wall to Eugene’s right became a screen. As a detailed video of his life played, Lovus revealed with detail all the research gathered
