One minute you’re having a great time living the playboy lifestyle, and the next an ex has a tragic accident and leaves you with a 10-month-old kid! My new daughter Emma is cute as a button, but I’m man enough to admit that I’m overwhelmed.

Help appears in the form of the angel next door, Shannon Becker, and though she’s confident in her maternal instincts, she seems to have no idea just how drop-dead gorgeous she really is.

My sisters ran off with their hunks, and I was left in my dead grandma’s house, trying to make all the decisions while appeasing everyone. When the hot playboy who owns the house next door shows up with a sad baby in his hands, everything changes, and for once, I’m the one taking charge.

Nate Waters is helpless around kids, but I’ll show him how to handle things ... and if I’m lucky, maybe that means he’ll teach me a few things as well.

I might be the plainest of the Becker sisters, but that doesn’t mean that I’m ignorant about what those hot looks of his mean. Nate’s the most gorgeous man I’ve ever met, so it’s impossible he’s into me ... right?

Both Nate and I have a lot to learn, and it looks like we’ll be doing some of that learning together—and in bed!

    Chapter One

    Shannon

So ... you’re in Berlin? I couldn’t keep the squeak out of my voice, and Mara laughed at my shock. If I didn’t know her better, I would have said that she was drunk—but she didn’t need alcohol to sound like that, not when Cade was involved.

Oh my God, Shannon, it’s amazing, she exclaimed. It’s frigid out here, and you can tell there’s just so much history rooted in the rock ... And there’s this beautiful glow ...

I could almost picture my glamorous older sister shaking her head as she reined herself in. In the background, I heard Cade speak up, and she said something to him before turning back to the phone and our conversation.

Listen, Shannon, I’ve got to go. Are you doing all right?

Of course I am, I said a little too sharply. I’m not going to wither and die because you ran off with your fiancé.

Cade hadn’t been her fiancé forty-eight hours ago. Both Mara and I had thought they were done for good. Somehow, he had turned things around and, on Christmas day, had whisked my sister off to Berlin.

Well, we were planning to spend Christmas day together ... your presents are on the counter.

Yes, I got the gift certificates, I said dryly. Thank you. I’ll mail yours.

Well, I might not be heading back to Atlanta for a while, Mara admitted, and I felt my headache. How in the world did my sisters handle these whirlwind affairs? It all left me dizzy.

Don’t worry about it. Go off and see Berlin. Tell Cade he’d better treat you right.

Thanks, Shannon. Mara paused. You’re a good sister, Shannon. Don’t be too lonely today, okay?

That’s a silly thing to say, I told her. Have a good time. Don’t get into any trouble.

I heard her laugh at something Cade said as she ended the call. No matter what else I might think of Cade and their relationship, I wasn’t sure that I had ever heard my sister laugh like that, and a part of me grudgingly conceded that he might actually be good for Mara.

I wondered if I should call Chloe and tell her about Mara running off to Berlin with a brand-new fiancé, but then it occurred to me that Chloe was probably dealing with a brand-new fiancé of her own the morning after Christmas.

No one had thought it was a good idea for Chloe to get involved with Alex Reed, son of one of the richest, most powerful families in town, but no one could ever tell my baby sister what to do. And it was a good thing because she and Alex had somehow beaten the odds (and, according to some local gossip, had managed to royally piss off the esteemed Reed family in the bargain). They were holed up in Chloe’s little apartment in Illinois, plotting their next move.

All of which left me in our deceased grandmother’s house in White Pines, still without a clue as to what to do with the place.

Sorry, Grandma, I murmured to the room at large. I thought we would have this figured out by now.

Grandma Rose would have just rolled her eyes at us. She loved us all, but she had always been a pragmatic, no-nonsense type of woman. We had spent every Christmas and most summers in White Pines, running in and out of the house under her watchful eye. She loved us, but she gave us our space. We all loved her for that.

She had died a few years ago, and after the house made its way through probate, it had turned out that it was willed to my sisters and me. The question of what to do with the house was what had brought us back to sleepy little White Pines, Wisconsin, this Christmas, but the question seemed just as confusing now as it had been at the beginning of the season.

Was I a little bitter because
