Volume 2 of the Laid Bare novella series
Dahlia
Lucien Chambers led me along the icy trail back to his mansion, a Tudor monstrosity looming like a ghostly specter on a cold March day. I shivered and quaked in my winter boots, hoping Lucien couldn’t feel my uncertainty, or my fear, which was certainly possible with my arm looped through his.
Whether my sudden trepidation had been brought on by the anticipation of what might happen next, or by outright terror, I couldn’t be sure. See, the problem was for as much as I longed to be with Lucien—and oh, did I ever!—a part of me feared him. I feared the unknown surrounding him. I feared not knowing who or what he really was. And, most of all, I feared how insanely connected I felt to him.
This might not end well. I had to accept that possibility.
A shudder ran through me, prompting Lucien’s brows to furrow as he glanced over at me. Are you having second thoughts, Dahlia?
he asked.
I shook my head firmly. No, no. Not at all.
Lucien slowed, and I knew then he’d detected my lie. He stopped completely and spun me to him. Cocking his head, he assessed me. I smiled up at him—damn, he was tall—but he saw right through me.
We can always turn around,
he said smoothly, his voice warming me. Hearing Lucien speak was like downing a glass of fine scotch on a cold, wintry day.
I’ll walk you back to your car if you want,
he continued, oblivious to my musings. You can return to your apartment, continue on as you have. I will make it so you believe we never came upon one another over by the lake.
He gestured to the frozen body of water far off in the distance, shimmering eerily, overhung with mist.
We’ve walked quite a ways,
I remarked. I didn’t add the rest of my thought: We’re getting closer and closer to the point of no return.
Whatever you want, Dahlia,
he went on, I will do
—he smiled sadly—for you.
But I didn’t want to go, and Lucien clearly wanted me to stay. It touched me to see this man—or being of some sort—rendered weak by little `ole me.
Swallowing hard, overcome with emotion, I raggedly replied, I can’t go back, Lucien. You know this, right? How am I supposed to just turn around and leave after what I’ve been through these past two months?
He had this hold over me, and it almost destroyed me. Since we reunited, I felt stronger than I had in ages. Lucien had recharged me in some way. He knew this, he had to.
I do,
he replied softly, a response to the thoughts in my head, thoughts he could hear perfectly well whenever he chose.
Still, I had reservations and the gnawing fear that things could go horribly wrong.
I started to turn away, then turned back again. Ugh, I was not sure which way to go—back to the car…or with Lucien to his house.
When Lucien grabbed my hand, my decision was made. But he didn’t know it yet, and he was still trying to give me an out.
Listen to me, Dahlia.
His dark eyes implored mine. I can do much more than make it as if you never saw me today.
He lowered his voice and his slight British accent became more pronounced. Lucien may have been giving me an out, but it was distressing him.
Still, he went on. I can give you the memory that you drove up to the park to get away for the afternoon. You’ll forget you ran into me. You’ll forget all of this.
He motioned to the path we’d walked. "But more than any of those things, I could, if you so desire, remove every memory you have of me."
"What? Horrified, I wrenched my hand from his.
Why would you even offer to do such
