Sacred Sites - Serene Conneeley
Chapter 1
The Magic of the Earth
Since ancient times, sacred sites have had a powerful effect on people. Their vibrational essence, beauty, tranquillity and history, along with the magnetic power infused in each one by centuries of pilgrims steeping it with love and energy, can heal people physically, activate them spiritually and open their heart and their soul to their divine purpose.
Sacred sites are spiritually significant places that inspire the imagination and activate change and healing in those who spend time there. Each country has several places that are recognised as sacred, as do all religions and cultures, and visiting any one of them will be both a literal and a symbolic adventure, a journey to one of the most beautiful places on the planet as well as to the deepest, most sacred parts of your self.
Some are intricate manmade structures, such as the Inka city of Machu Picchu in Peru and the Pyramids of Egypt, while others are ancient paths of energy like the Camino, a pilgrimage across the north of Spain. Some are elaborately engineered stone circles such as Britain’s Stonehenge, and others are natural formations like the Tor, the sacred hill in Glastonbury, England; Uluru, the huge monolith in Central Australia; and the volcanoes, mountains and waterfalls of Hawaii.
These are the seven I wrote about in Seven Sacred Sites: Magical Journeys That Will Change Your Life, a large book that has inspired many a magical journey, but which is too heavy to throw in your backpack and take with you on your adventures. And so here is the eBook, with extra practical information added, which is easy to take with you when you travel, or just while planning your trip.
Peru is one of the most popular destinations for pilgrims in search of enlightenment. It’s immense and varied in its spiritual impact, from the mystery of the Amazon jungles to the magic of the northern plains, the sacred mountain peaks where guardian spirits reside and the enigmatic Nazca Lines near the coast. The pretty town of Cusco, once the imperial capital of the Inkas, is the gateway to the Sacred Valley, which is re-emerging as a centre of spirituality and the Old Ways, while further south is Titikaka, a lake considered by some to be the birthplace of civilisation. Then there is Machu Picchu, the fabled Lost City of the Inkas, which floats, mist-shrouded and high in the mountains, and was recently voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
The mix of sacred earth energies, nature-based religious beliefs, old ruins and local shamans revealing their magic to visitors draws people who are on a quest to find themselves and connect with the mysticism and spirituality of this incredible land. Many yearn to learn the ways of Peru’s medicine men and women, and there are several mystical tours that include sessions with a shaman, as well as a growing number of indigenous healers willing to share their secrets.
Taking part in sacred shamanic ceremonies, from making despacho earth offerings to drinking ayahuasca deep in the jungle, can help you find perspective, balance and healing, and the courage to leave behind the parts of yourself that you no longer need. Many people (including me) experience a symbolic death and rebirth during their time in Peru, and end up seeing the world, and themselves, in a very different way.
Like most sacred sites, many of Peru’s monuments are located on leylines, invisible pathways in the earth through which currents of magnetic energy run, similar to the acupuncture meridians of the human body. Our meridians carry chi, life force, while the world’s leylines channel the life force of the universe.
Leys, also known as earth currents, holy lines and telluric tracks, have been described as the nervous system of the planet. They are routes of spiritual energy that have an intense power that activates growth and healing, and many people believe it’s this earth energy that makes sacred sites so transformational. Being on or near one increases vitality, heightens awareness and amplifies spirituality and wisdom, because their vibration is absorbed when you interact with them, either by walking along the lines or spending time at the sites they run beneath. This boosts physical health and psychic abilities, and connects you to the life force of the earth. Plants grow better along leylines, animals thrive and the air itself sparkles with vivid energy and possibility.
While the existence of leylines is disputed by some because they can’t be seen, they are a universal concept, recognised by cultures that span the globe. Native Americans call them the spirit path, Australian Aboriginals have songlines and serpent tracks that link their sacred places, and the art of geomancy known as feng shui is based on the Chinese belief in lung mei, dragon paths, lines of energy that flow through the earth and influence the fate of those who live along them. In Peru, the Inkas had a system of energy grids called ceques, and a line dubbed Wiracocha’s Route links the holy cities and archaeological centres of the empire.
Spending time in Peru, at the places where the physical world becomes the spiritual, lets you experience something greater. You’ll be inspired to do more, see more and be more when you return home. It will stir the longing in your heart to achieve your dreams, follow your passions and live the connection your soul feels to this great universe. My wish for you is that your journey to Peru will make you see the world with new eyes, allow the beauty and magic of this enchanted planet to open you up to your personal truths, and help you discover the sacredness of your own self.
Chapter 2
The Place
Each of us used Peru to grow internally. We felt the vividness of our waking hours as intensely as our sleeping hours, each of us experiencing strong dreams that had powerful impact. It was as though we were centred in an energy power point that amplified what ordinarily would have been a more low-key experience.
Shirley MacLaine, American actor and spiritual author
* * * * *
South America, with its wild jungles, powerful rivers and smiling people, has long captured the imagination of people in the west, who are fascinated by the tribal cultures, the lush greenness, the vividly coloured and vibrant wildlife and the almost savage magic that envelops the land and its inhabitants.
It has inspired and intrigued millions of travellers from around the globe, from the backpackers who take off to the jungles, beaches or party towns for months at a time, to the spiritual seekers determined to find divine truths hidden within the ancient ruins, the traditional shamanic practices and the sacred landscape of the continent.
Peru, on the central west coast, is regarded by many as the most spiritual of the South American countries. Its location has made it a melting pot of cultures and traditions, while its geography – tropical beaches and coastline, jungle wilderness, sweeping desert plains and the stunning snowcapped mountains of the Andes – has shaped a diverse nation. It also has the largest indigenous population in the Americas, so the Old Ways have been well preserved and passed on.
The capital, Lima, is a modern city of learning and technology, yet in remote villages, on Andean hilltops and deep in the Amazon jungle, a way of life continues that has endured for millennia. Woolly llamas wander the mountain passes, laughing children in brightly coloured clothes play with homemade dolls, medicine men practise ancient healing methods, traditionally dressed musicians play their haunting flutes, and the hard-working indigenous people eke out a living in often harsh conditions. It’s a place where Inka Cola rather than Coke is the biggest-selling soft drink, a country proud of its traditions and sometimes reluctant to share its secrets.
Along with Egypt, Peru is one of the most popular destinations for pilgrims in search of enlightenment. The mix of sacred earth energies and leylines, nature-based religious beliefs, old ruins and local shamans revealing their magic to visitors draws people to the country. Inspired by Shirley MacLaine’s book Out On a Limb, about the inner search travelling there sparked in her, and the stories of adventure and transformation in James Redfield’s The Celestine Prophecy, many people have booked a ticket to Peru in their own quest to find themselves and to connect with the mysticism and spirituality of this land.
The jewel of the region is Machu Picchu, the fabled Lost City of the Inkas, which floats, mist-shrouded and obscured by clouds, high in the mountains. The Inkas were a brilliant civilisation that expanded to unite many diverse cultures from the early 1200s until the 1530s, when the Spanish invaded the
