      Chapter 1

      The Magic of the Earth

      Since ancient times, sacred sites have had a powerful effect on people. Their vibrational essence, beauty, tranquillity and history, along with the magnetic power infused in each one by centuries of pilgrims steeping it with love and energy, can heal people physically, activate them spiritually and open their heart and their soul to their divine purpose.

      Sacred sites are spiritually significant places that inspire the imagination and activate change and healing in those who spend time there. Each country has several places that are recognised as sacred, as do all religions and cultures, and visiting any one of them will be both a literal and a symbolic adventure, a journey to one of the most beautiful places on the planet as well as to the deepest, most sacred parts of your self.

      Some are intricate manmade structures, such as the Inka city of Machu Picchu in Peru and the Pyramids of Egypt, while others are ancient paths of energy like the Camino, a pilgrimage across the north of Spain. Some are elaborately engineered stone circles such as Britain’s Stonehenge, and others are natural formations like the Tor, the sacred hill in Glastonbury, England; Uluru, the huge monolith in Central Australia; and the volcanoes, mountains and waterfalls of Hawaii.

      These are the seven I wrote about in Seven Sacred Sites: Magical Journeys That Will Change Your Life, a large book that has inspired many a magical journey, but which is too heavy to throw in your backpack and take with you on your adventure. And so here is the eBook, with extra practical information squeezed in, and easy to take with you on your trip. 

      There are many sacred sites around the world. Each country has several places that are recognised as such, as do all religions and cultures throughout history. Different sites are special to different people and for different reasons, yet on a universal level there are a few that resonate with everyone, regardless of culture or beliefs. Ancient Egypt is one of these.

      For centuries people have been lured to Egypt by the mysteries of the pyramids, the exotic foreignness of the country and the deep magic that is such an integral part of the wind that blows across the hot desert sands. Human-like deities, ancient healing methods and talk of extraterrestrial contact have also captured the imagination of spiritual pilgrims from around the globe.

      The pyramids are believed by many to be repositories of ancient wisdom, and the weight of the ages also adds significance. It’s hard not to be moved by the temples, heat-baked desert and mighty Nile River, which have been central to human history, myth and legend for millennia, and have more recently inspired numerous Hollywood tales. The gods and goddesses of old also have a place today, revered and made strong by new followers who speak their sacred names once more, and bring them back to life with their rituals and belief.

      So many people have a strong reaction to Egypt – from love and adoration to deep fear. Few are ambivalent. Some have a sense of deep knowing that they’re home when they visit, or long to go there because they feel somehow attuned to the country and its people, are inspired by their culture and history, or have a vivid memory of a past life spent there long ago. Others sense a darkness they can’t explain, which often times elicits a kind of dread that morphs into intrigue.

      Egypt is a fascinating land, from its sun-drenched desert sands to its beautiful ocean waters and fertile river banks. Bustling metropolitan cities stand side by side with the imposing stone monuments of the long ago pharaohs, and its culture and traditions reflect the many different peoples who have swept through the country over the centuries, and its incredible influence in the shaping of civilisation as we know it. Today it is a melting pot of cultures, with hints of the Persian, Greek and Roman Empires that controlled it for a time, the Sudanese kingdom, the early Christians, the Ottomans and most recently the Muslims, who have made the Arab Republic of Egypt a major power in North Africa.

      It is a place that holds the wisdom of all these people, religions and cultures, and all the secrets that have been whispered across the desert sands for millennia. Being there now, standing in the shadow of its pyramids, walking the processional avenues to the ancient temples, feeling the energy of a land that surges with heat and power, will challenge your perceptions, humble you with its grandeur, and open your heart to new possibilities and the immense potential within you.

      Like most sacred sites, many of the monuments of Ancient Egypt  are located on leylines, invisible pathways in the earth through which currents of magnetic energy run. Also known as earth currents, holy lines and telluric tracks, leys have been described as the nervous system of the planet. They are routes of spiritual energy that have an intense, measurable power that activates growth and healing, and many people believe it’s this powerful earth energy that makes sacred sites so transformational. Certainly inside the Great Pyramid and in some of the temples along the Nile you can feel this energy, which heightens awareness and amplifies spirituality and inner wisdom, connecting you to the life force of the planet and putting you in touch with the sparkle of possibility buried deep within you.

      Chapter 2

      The Place

      Do you not know that Egypt is a copy of heaven or rather, the very place on earth where the forces of heaven are balanced and ordered? Even more than that, if truth be told, Egypt is the temple of the entire world.

      Egypt, like much of the African continent, is a sun-drenched, luminous land of shifting sands, vast deserts, vivid blue skies and friendly, smiling people. It’s also a place of immense spiritual power, magic and history, and for centuries its ancient monuments have drawn pilgrims determined to unlock the hidden wisdom buried within the sands there.

      The awe-inspiring pyramids, mysterious Sphinx statue and the sacred temples along the Nile are thought to hold the knowledge of one of the oldest civilisations on earth, although sometimes it seems they offer more riddles than answers, adding to the mystery and intrigue of this fascinating country.

      It’s a place renowned for its dark secrets and transformational magic, and a series of sacred sites that vibrate with a mix of divine power and earth energies. Today Egypt is predominantly Islamic, the cultural centre of the Arab world, but it has a rich history of magicians and priests, pagan cults, gods and goddesses, mighty pharaohs, invading Persians, saviour Romans and Coptic Christians, as well as beautiful stories of creation and magic.

      For thousands of years one of the most advanced cultures in history worshipped the gods there, built structures that still confound scientists today, and lived deeply spiritual lives in tune with the earth, the seasons, the stars, and their concept of death as just part of the continuing journey, the gateway to a realm they envisaged as more enjoyable and enlightening than the mortal plane.

      Not much is recorded of the lifestyle, rituals and beliefs of the people who lived in this country in prehistoric times, although there is evidence of life in Egypt even before 25,000BCE, followed later by hunters and gatherers who camped along the fertile banks of the Nile River, tribes moving nomadically through the desert oases, and the beginnings of structured societies with local chiefs holding sway.

      Around 3000BCE Upper and Lower Egypt were unified under a single royal leader, and the great civilisation of the pharaohs began, leaving monuments and writings that continue to astound modern man.

      In particular people are drawn to Egypt by the history of the Old Kingdom era of the third millennium BCE, also known as the Age of the Pyramids, when Khufu and Khafre constructed their glorious, mysterious burial memorials, which have lasted almost five thousand years, and the New Kingdom era that ran from around 1550-1070BCE, when famous pharaohs such as Hatshepsut, Amenhotep III and Tutankhamun ruled the land and built grand temples to honour themselves and the gods.

      Beholding these monuments, which have weathered centuries of sandstorms, dramatic floods and the fiery desert heat, connects people with the ancient wisdom and power that is imbued in each stone. Standing on this ground, touching these pyramids and praying or meditating within the temples awakens something deep within, and can transform a person’s awareness and their life and spirituality.
