It was my second trip to Quepos, Costa Rica, a beautiful town along the coast on the Pacific Ocean side of the country. I was with my brother and we were looking forward to draining a few Imperial Beers, actually, more than a few, and eating one of the country’s signature dishes, black beans and rice.
We landed in San Jose, the capital, and from there took a small commuter plane on the short 20 minute flight over the mountains to the coast. The scenery below us was incredibly beautiful; the jungle canopy, the Pacific Ocean sparkling blue, edged by a ribbon of sandy beach along its length. In no time we were touching down at the small, very small, airport in Quepos. There was a lone building at the end of a narrow landing strip which served as the terminal, although it wasn’t much larger than a good size house. And it was open all around, basically just a floor with a roof over it.
The first thing that greeted us was the high heat and humidity. Our shirts were soaked with sweat before we walked the short distance from the plane to the terminal. The temperature wasn’t anything like San Jose, which sat at a much higher elevation and sported a much lower humidity. It was downright steamy along the coast in this part of the country.
The airplane was much too small to take carry-on bags inside. It only held about a dozen people. So we had to wait a few minutes for the luggage to be unloaded and brought inside. This was an all manual process. There were no machines or conveyor belts here. But it didn’t take long. Once our bags were taken off the cart and placed on the concrete floor of the terminal, we grabbed one of the vans waiting outside, along with several others, and took the short drive into town. From there we had to catch a taxi to go over the hill to our hotel, which was just outside the entrance to Manuel Antonio Park, one of the countries many nature preserves. The hotel was less than 5 miles away from downtown Quepos, in a small community of its own.
Hotel Playa Espadilla turned out to be the perfect choice for this trip. Our room overlooked the pool, which had a swim up bar. There was also a restaurant on the property. And the best thing of all was the fact that it wasn’t very expensive.
We spent that first afternoon sitting out at the pool relaxing and drinking cold Imperial beer. We enjoyed watching a couple of large iguanas nearby and one woman was able to coax a dozen small monkeys down to where she sat on the grass a few yards from where we lounged. She fed them bananas while we took photos. That night we had a great seafood dinner in the restaurant behind the pool. All-in-all that first day had been a very nice one.
My brother liked to cook. And with all the fresh seafood and vegetables in the area he couldn’t wait to cook us up a gourmet meal the next evening. So after breakfast we hopped a bus going into downtown Quepos. That cost us a whopping quarter each! We visited the seafood market there and ordered some Yellow Fin Tuna. The lady took out a large slab of fish from the walk-in refrigerator and cut us off a hunk. It looked like way too much for one meal but it was cheap enough so we bought it all. I could see my brother’s eyes light up once he saw that fish. I figured he must be contemplating how it was going to look after he finished with it later that night, and more importantly how it would taste once he worked his culinary magic.
When we finished there we walked around a bit to the various vegetables stands and bought a variety of vegetables to go with the fish. I didn’t really know exactly how my brother was going to cook what we bought but I knew it was going to be good. With him in the kitchen it always was. When we had everything we needed and were on our way to the bus stop to head back to the hotel, I spied a bakery that had the most delicious looking chocolate cookies on display in the window. I had to have some! I purchased 6. They tasted even better than they looked. I ate 3 of them before we boarded the bus!
Once back at the room, I put my bag of 3 cookies on the kitchen counter while my brother put the fish and vegetables in the fridge. Then we were off to hike in the park, which was only a five minute walk from the hotel. The park was unbelievably beautiful and that was why we were staying in Quepos. During our last trip we didn’t spend much time inside this national preserve. This time we intended to hike into some of the more remote sections, hoping to find a few of the larger monkeys that made this park their home.
Some of the most gorgeous beach scenery was filmed here. If you want to see paradise, this is where you can find it! We hiked some of the back trails, constantly looking out for poisonous snakes as well as any other wildlife that lived there. We did find a troop of white faced monkeys and stopped to watch them up in the trees. And of course there were dozens of lazy looking iguanas. They were everywhere! Their leathery skin covered a wide range of color, from dark brown to vivid green. They certainly were prehistoric looking!
It didn’t take long in the hot humid air before we were tired out and wanted nothing more than to sit in the pool at the swim up bar and drink some cold ones. We hurried back to change into our swimming trunks, thinking of that first cold beer and how good it was going to taste after sweating profusely all day. Our clothes were soaking wet when we arrived back at the hotel.
I quickly changed and hurried down the stairs to the pool. My brother followed a few minutes later. Don’t know what took him so long. He was usually the first to get to a cold beer! Maybe he spent a few minutes eyeing the fish in the fridge and thinking about his culinary adventure later.
I swear I think they short change you on the amount of beer in that first bottle. It always disappears so fast! At least that is the explanation I use. We drank a couple more and watched the two large iguanas on the roof above us playing around. Apparently, they made the hotel grounds their home since they were the same two we had seen the day before. My bladder, not being what it was when I was a young man, sent me up to the room first to relieve myself. Such a waste of fine beer! My brother is several years younger and I don’t know where he stores it but he can put away about twice as much as me before he has to go.
Leaving the bathroom, I happened to glance over at the kitchen counter and noticed my cookies were gone. I couldn’t believe it! That was why my brother had taken so long changing into his swimming trunks. I had purposely saved those for my after dinner dessert. And he had eaten them all! I was seething by the time I got to the door of the room. Why would he do that? He could have just as easily bought some of his own. But he said he had been gaining weight so didn’t want any. It had been a very nice day so I was torn between confronting him and letting it go. I could buy more the next time we went into town. It wasn’t like it was a huge thing but none the less it irked me more than a little. In fact, the more I thought about it, the angrier I became.
Forcing down the anger that was building up inside me over the incident, stupid as it may sound, I left the room. After locking the door I stood on the outside walkway looking down at my brother in the pool, trying to return to my mellow feeling of just a few minutes earlier. And then a miracle happened.
I watched as one of the large iguanas fell from the roof into the pool below, narrowly missing my brother. And being the nice guy that he is he tried to help the poor creature get out of the water. As he picked up the struggling reptile the thing bit him on the arm! I didn’t know they actually bit people very often because they were so docile. But this I saw it with my own eyes. Talk about justice! Take that for eating my cookies! I was laughing so hard I needed to go to the bathroom again. But I put that off for the time being when
