From their humble beginnings in Spain, tapas have become popular throughout the world with new tapas bars springing up everywhere. I even noticed recently that our local supermarket had its own range of tapas for sale. Add to this the number of people going to Spain on holiday, and having a real tapas experience, it is no wonder that there is a great interest in creating tapas at home, no matter where you live in the world.
There are a number of ideas about the origin of tapas. The word actually means ‘cover’ or 'lid'. One suggestion is that it started by people covering their wine glass with a slice of bread to stop fruit flies getting in. This then became a way of serving food. Another idea revolves around the fact that people in Spain usually eat standing up in bars and the plate was usually put on top of their drinking glass so that they could eat. Others think that some bar owners found that strong cheese could cover up the taste of bad wine and as a result offered free cheese slices when they were served wine. What ever their origin, tapas have evolved into both a way of life and a fantastic way to combine food and wine.
Anybody who has been to Spain can only be impressed by the array of tapas foods displayed in the many bars and the attitude of the Spanish when it comes to eating and drinking. The Spanish like to drink wine, and eating tapas between drinks means that they aren’t drinking on an empty stomach. In the past, farm workers ate the tapas and the wine and this
