Using Minkowski distance function we propose a class of Human Development Index measures. Special cases of this turn out to be the popularly used linear average method as also a newly proposed displaced ideal method. Two measures of penalty are suggested. One captures the non-uniform attainment across dimensions and the other captures the deviation from the ideal path. A method of adjusting for unequal weights is also provided.

Study Objective. To compare the pharmacodynamics of uniform versus nonuniform warfarin dosages. Design. Prospective, randomized, crossover study. Setting. Anticoagulation clinic. Subjects. Twenty healthy subjects who had the extensive metabolizer cytochrome P450 (CYP) genotype of 2C9*1/*1 or CYP2C9*1/*3. Intervention. Subjects received either warfarin 5.75 mg once/day (two 1-mg tablets plus one and a half 2.5-mg tablets) as part of the uniform dosage group or warfarin 7.5 mg/day on Mondays and Fridays and 5 mg/day on each of the remaining days of the week as part of the nonuniform dosage group. Subjects received the first regimen for 17 days, had a 2-week washout period, and then were switched to the other regimen for another 17 days. Measurements and Main Results. During both treatment periods, international normalized ratios (INRs) were checked daily using a fingerstick method. Any changes in concomitant drug therapy, including over-the-counter and supplement products, as well as health status were recorded. The Scheffe post hoc test revealed no significant differences in mean INR values obtained during receipt of the two dosage regimens. In both dosage groups, variation in the INR became more pronounced as INR values increased. No adverse events (i.e., major or minor bleeding) or changes in drug therapy were reported during the study. Conclusion. Our findings suggest that it is safe to use a nonuniform dosage regimen of warfarin to reach a target INR range. With both uniform and nonuniform regimens, close monitoring remains important to ensure that patients remain within the desired INR range.

Spatially resolved drop size, drop velocity, and spray volume flux measurements for sprays produced by a commonly used pharmaceutical coating nozzle were performed in this study. Results showed three distinctive spray patterns: Gaussian, homogeneous, and dumbbell shaped. We found that transition from a dumbbell-shaped to a homogeneous pattern is related to the shaping air-induced breakup of already formed drops: depending on the drop size upstream of the location where the shaping air flows meet (i.e., the "junction" point), the drop viscosity, and the magnitude of the shaping air velocity, the shaping air can either pinch the spray or cause additional drop breakup. When the former outweighs the latter, the dumbbell-shaped pattern occurs; the homogeneous pattern is present when the opposite occurs. A corollary to this experimental interpretation is that whether additional drop breakup homogenizes the sprays or pinches, it is related to a Weber number (We) that is calculated using drop sizes upstream of the junction point, drop viscosity and surface tension, and the shaping air velocity at the junction point. With this idea in mind, we propose a We-based scaling method for optimizing the uniformity of air-assist spray patterns.

Watermelons are particular conÿgurations of vicious walkers. In these conÿgurations, each path starts and ends at the same ordinate. We present a simple uniform random generation algorithm of watermelons based on enumeration formulas of star conÿgurations (with or without a wall). The performance of this algorithm is better than earlier ones in the case of watermelons with few walkers.

Morphological investigations and classification of Ge hut clusters forming the arrays of quantum dots on the Si(001) surface at low temperatures in the process of the ultrahigh vacuum molecular beam epitaxy have been carried out using in situ scanning tunnelling microscopy. Two main species of Ge hut clusters composing the arrays-pyramidal and wedge-shaped ones-have been found to have different atomic structures. The inference is made that shape transitions between pyramids and wedges are impossible. The nucleation probabilities of pyramids and wedges equal 1/2 at the initial stage of the array formation. The wedges become the dominating species as the amount of the deposited germanium is increased. A fraction and a density of the pyramids in the arrays are rapidly decreased with the growth of Ge coverage.

Trees in natural forests are scattered across and along altitudinal gradients. The mode of dispersion varies within a natural forest and is influenced by natural translocation phenomena of biotic and abiotic factors acting on the environment. It is understood that dispersion in a natural forest can be in random, uniformed or clumped and assumed to be in random at a certain degree. This study was carried out in Busama forest area in a permanent sampling plot to describe the distribution pattern of trees within the forest area with Myristica spp. used because of its dominance within the forest. The index of dispersion technique was used to assess and analyze the distribution patterns of Myristica spp. where quadrat sizes are increased from 1m² to 2,500m² using Microsoft EXCEL to generate subplots within the PSP and f -test was used to test the significance of the departure or closeness of the distribution to randomness at F 0.01 ≥ 1.36 (at 1% level of significance). It was found that as the quadrat size increase the distribution pattern of Myristica spp. becomes random and also the population density increases but it is predicted that it will become random but in clumps (F 0.01 ≥ 1.36), as the quadrat size increased to about 200m² and above, there is a significant departure from the randomness of closeness. However, the distribution pattern of Myristica species in this case is general and can be applied to other tree species in other locales.

Objective: To evaluate parents' preferences regarding the appearance and attire of orthodontists. Materials and Methods: Parents attending their child's first orthodontic appointment were asked to choose from among sets of photographs of potential orthodontic providers. Selected factors were varied within the sets, including sex and age of the provider as well as attire (casual, formal, white coat, or scrubs), hairstyle (loose or tied back for women, facial hair or clean shaven for men), and presence of a nametag. Results: A total of 77 parents participated. There were significant differences in choice of provider in terms of the provider's sex (P , .0001), age (P 5 .0013), dress (P , .0001), hair (P , .0001), and nametag (P 5 .0065). There were no significant differences in preference attributable to parent characteristics (P . .05). Conclusion: Parents of orthodontic patients demonstrated clear preferences for choosing a provider related to factors that are not within the control of the practitioner (sex and age) as well as factors that can be changed by the practitioner (attire, hairstyle, and wearing a nametag). Human visual sensitivity to a fairly broad class of dynamic stimuli can be modeled accurately using two temporal channels. Here, we analyze fMRI measurements of the temporal step response to spatially uniform stimuli to estimate these channels in human primary visual cortex (V1). In agreement with the psychophysical literature, the V1 fMRI temporal responses are modeled accurately as a mixture of two (transient and sustained) channels. We derive estimates of the relative contributions from these two channels at a range of eccentricities. We find that all portions of V1 contain a significant transient response. The central visual field representation includes a significant sustained response, but the amplitude of the sustained channel signal declines with eccentricity. The sustained signals may reflect the emphasis on pattern recognition and color in the central visual field; the dominant transient response in the visual periphery may reflect responses in the human visual attention system.

In this paper we propose an estimator of the entropy of a continuous random variable. The estimator is obtained by modifying the estimator proposed by . Consistency of estimator is proved, and comparisons are made with Vasicek's estimator (1976), van Es's estimator (1992), Ebrahimi et al. 's estimator (1994) and Correa's estimator (1995). The results indicate that the proposed estimator has smaller mean squared error than above estimators.
