Tritons

The studies performed in the frame of a project destined for the search of new (t,n) and (p,n) reactions of interest in nuclear reactors are described. Experimental evidences of the observations of the reactions: 46 Ti(t,n) 48 V, 48 Ti(p,n) 48 V, 52 Cr(t,n) 54 Mn, 56 Fe(p,n) 56 Co, 72 Ge(t,n) 74 As and 74 Ge(p,n) 74 As, are presented. Additional data on some secondary reactions, already characterised for the production of 7 Be, 56 Co, 58 Co, 65 Zn and 88 Y, were also obtained. The significance of these data is discussed.

Because of their large size and beauty, triton shells are among the most conspicuous bio-archaeological finds on any Cretan excavation.1 In Minoan archaeology they appear both
as actual objects and as subjects in representational art.  Different lines of scholarship have discussed their use as food, tools, or ritual objects, and these studies indicate that triton shells are found in a variety of contexts.2 More thorough treatments of the topic, however, have been
limited by the uneven publication of primary data.
The recent excavations at Papadiokampos and Chryssi have recovered a large number of triton shells from the two Late Minoan IB settlements, and the assemblages offer a new
window into the consumption of these mollusks.3 This paper examines their use in particular households within these communities and the possible meanings embedded in the modification and transformation of tritons from food to tool to symbol. In this way the various “life stages” of tritons and the representations of tritons in Minoan art can be critically examined with reference to the broader economic, social, and ideological environment on Crete.

This article considers the depiction of the marine world and its mythical inhabitants in the Natural History of Pliny the Elder. Through an ecocritical reading of the text, whereby I consider Pliny's tendency to conceptualise Nature as a divinity and his consequential displacement of the traditionally anthropomorphic Greco-Roman gods, we can better understand the underlying factors in Pliny's selective inclusion of ideas. I argue that Pliny's divinisation of Nature, attributable to the influence of ancient Stoicism, has impacted his conception of the relationship between humans and Nature, an ideal centred around a post-anthropocentric framework. This, in turn, exerts a ripple effect onto the folkloric elements of the text. Both the anthropic figures of the sea (Nereids and Tritons) along with more bestial creatures (sea monsters) become dispossessed of traditionally divine attributes and associations with Poseidon/Neptune, leading to their representation in the Natural History as more 'naturalised' types of sea creatures.

One of the outstanding examples of baroque decorative art in the Museum's collections is a musical instrument, a gilded harpsichord of fantastic form. The wing-shaped body of the instrument is supported by three fishtailed Tritons, gliding on softly swelling waves. Between them rise two sea nymphs, and riding behind is a putto, perched high on a sea shell and driving two dolphins. All these fishy folk move through the water with bold and cheerful gestures. The water itself, silvery green and shimmering, is enclosed by a massive ledge that repeats on a larger scale the outline of the harpsichord proper. And this whole oceanic phantasmagoria rests on lions' feet. The instrument has often been displayed and is at present the piece de resistance of the exhibition of the Baroque Orchestra, opposite the Auditorium.

Hyperlipidemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. The present study was conducted to evaluate the potential role of chicory (Cichorium intybus Linn.) against hyperlipidemia and its subsequent effect in rats. Sixty male albino rats were randomly and equally divided into four groups. Hyperlipidemia was induced via intraperitoneal injection of Triton WR‐1339 at a dose of 250 mg/kg body weight three times a week for 2 weeks. Chicory‐supplemented diet (10 g/100 g diet) was given for 4 weeks to group II and group IV. Chicory caused significant improvement in lipid profile and decreased the liver and heart acetyl‐CoA carboxylase activity, atherogenic indices, hepatic 3‐hydroxy‐3‐methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG‐CoA) reductase mRNA level and visfatin level. Meanwhile, significant increase in paraoxonase‐1, superoxide dismutase and catalase activity was recorded. In conclusion, chicory has the potential role of being hypolipidemic, anti‐lipotoxic, anti‐oxidant and anti‐atherogenic factor.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Herbal treatments for hyperlipidemia are relatively cheap and locally available. The results showed that chicory (Cichorium intybus) has the potential of being hypolipidemic, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and decreased the atherogenic risk indices and anti-steatotic. Thus, it may represent a new source of natural food supplement aimed at preventing dyslipidemic risk for atherosclerosis, cardiac and hepatic steatosis.

A thin tritium target was bombarded by 14.1-MeV neutrons and the outgoing protons, deuterons and tritons were studied with a specially constructed proportional counter-scintillator telescope. The angular distribution for elastic scattering was obtained for neutron angles from 55° to 180° in the c.m. system. A previous calculation assuming a Serber interaction was shown to give a good fit to this angular distribution. Deuterons from the breakup reaction 3H(n, d)2n were detected at 8 lab = 0°, but no breakup protons were observed.
