Thermalisme Antique

Many are the Italian thermo-mineral resorts mentioned by classical authors. In this contribution, we discuss their spacial distribution and the difficulties of matching literary mentions and sites documented by archaeological evidence. Furthermore, we approached the subject of false literary attestations claimed by modern thermal spas.

The paper derives from the reading of a document conserved in the Historical Archive of the Municipality of Aquileia, dating back to 1916, which speaks of water supplies in the town through three aquifers: the attention has been focused on the second, characterized by sulphurous waters (which inserts Aquileia in the Italian map of thermalism), with particular regard to the wells of this water present at Beligna. This place, in fact, placed in the southern quadrant of the suburb, takes its name from Belenus, a deity that here would have had its temple and whose name has been recently interpreted as “god of water sources”. Given the presence in the Aquileian epigraphic corpus of at least two documents mentioning the Fons B(eleni), the document of 1916 offers new ideas for research, in which the Fons acquires further nuances in meaning.

Cet ouvrage sur le thermalisme romain, dans ses aspects sociaux et culturels, est une enquête sur un phénomène singulier dans lequel prennent place des thermes différents des établissements thermaux à but hygiénique. A partir de la lecture des sources littéraires, confrontées aux recherches épigraphiques et aux sites archéologiques, se révèle un phénomène original. Le thermalisme n’a pas seulement à voir avec le développement spectaculaire des thermes et des bains dans le monde romain, il est centré sur l’utilisation - consciente et voulue de la part des Romains - d’eaux minérales particulières aux vertus thérapeutiques présumées. Le thermalisme, utilisation des eaux à vertu thérapeutique, appartient donc au domaine médical dans le cadre d’une réflexion « scientifique » relatif au pouvoir guérisseur des eaux. Son développement s’inscrit dans l’organisation politique et sociale de la fin de la République et des débuts de l’Empire. Il possède un attrait économique pour la maison impériale. Il renvoie à la conception de l’otium et d’une villégiature souvent luxueuse, au sein d’établissements spécifiques tournés vers la santé du corps et le repos de l’esprit. Il prend forme dans des stations thermales, entités « urbaines » particulières. Il attire une population hétérogène, en quête de guérison et d’un ailleurs salutaire. Il se situe à la marge de la médecine, de la religion et des pratiques superstitieuses. Et si Baïes en fut le parangon exceptionnel, c’est toute l’Italie antique qui connut ce phénomène en l’adaptant aux particularités locales pour répondre aux besoins des hommes et des animaux.

The roman healing spa of Aquae Flaviae is one of the best preserved of its kind recently excavated. It’s a large monumental complex and the results of the recent excavations may shed new light on the meaning and function of spas in the Roman Empire and their relation to indigenous communities.

El balneario terapéutico romano de Aquae Flaviae es uno de los mas bien preservados de su tipo recientemente escavados. Se trata de un establecimiento monumental y los resultados de las últimas excavaciones pueden aclarar el significado y función de estas estructuras en el império romano y su relación con las comunidades indigenas.

In order to understand the architectonical and functional peculiarities of Roman healing spas using mineral
waters, the study of their collection systems should be one of the main subjects. In this way we propose a first
approximation to these hydraulic infrastructures which must be adapted to the topography of the spring area
and to the physical and chemical conditions of these mineral waters. The study of these structures in Hispania
has allowed us to propose an initial typology as one of the essential aspects to be included in the study of the
configuration of Roman Healing spas.

ACUÁTICAS 1 La sacralización de los manantiales de aguas termales, y la presentación de exvotos dedicados a las divinidades asociadas a éstas, es un fenómeno bien conocido en el mundo antiguo, bien documentado en concreto en diversos puntos de la Península Ibérica, de los que muchos se concentran, precisamente, al Noroeste. La intervención sobrenatural se consideraba en estos casos imprescindible para obtener la curación en termas y balnearios, y el agradecimiento subsiguiente de los devotos nos proporciona indicios, en general vagos, sobre la naturaleza y funciones de estas divinidades y, ocasionalmente, sobre la situación social de los dedicantes. Frecuentemente son ninfas, lo que nos indica un cierto grado de romanización, que encubre la presencia ancestral de divinidades indígenas.

Are analyzed the coins recovered during the archaeological intervention carried out in the Roman baths of Arcaya, between the years 1976-1982, under the direction of Ramón Loza Lengaran.

Se analizan las monedas recuperadas durante la intervención arqueológica llevada a cabo en las termas romanas de Arcaya, entre los años 1976-1982, bajo la dirección de Ramón Loza Lengaran.

With reference to the general theme of this volume, we present a state of affairs regarding the study of thermal spas in the Iberian Peninsula, which include a review of the historiography and an updated bibliography.
Based on a selection of well preserved and/or documented Roman spas, we highlight the main characteristics of bathing establishments created to take advantage of the health virtues of mineral-medicinal waters;
we will consider the problems of their study and characterization; and we will consider the analytical perspectives of the aspects associated to Roman thermalism.

Les thermes thérapeutiques se distinguent de ceux hygiéniques par leur plan constitué de multiples piscines et bassins. On les retrouve autour de sources thermales. D'autres édifices aux mêmes caractéristiques se rencontrent toutefois en dehors de telles sources, preuve que le ˝thermalisme˝ a connu une diffusion plus large. Zusammenfassung: Heilbäder und herkömmliche Thermen zur Reinigung des Körpers unterscheiden sich hinsichtlich ihres Bauplanes durch verschiedene Schwimmbecken und Becken. Solche Heilbäder finden sich immer am Quellaustritt von Thermalquellen. Andere Gebäude mit den gleichen Merkmalen finden sich allerdings auch entfernt von solchen Quellen. Dies belegt die große Verbreitung des Badebetriebs.

More urbico lavatur: la clausola pubblicitaria di CIL XI, 721 (da Bononia), che intitola il libro, sintetizza icasticamente i poli concettuali della monografia, ossia il termalismo igienico come veicolo di romanizzazione e inveramento architettonico della stessa nella topografia urbana. In linea più generale, l’opera si inserisce all’interno delle ricerche sulla “Water Culture in Roman Society” e il sottotitolo del libro veicola le coordinate geografiche (regiones VII e VIII) e contenutistiche (epigrafia termale), a partire dalla fonte documentaria utilizzata: le testimonianze epigrafiche. Le cifre caratteristiche della ricerca sono l’approfondimento ecdotico di ogni testimonianza e l’approccio interdisciplinare. Parte fondamentale dell’approfondita analisi di ogni iscrizione è infatti la presenza di apografi ricostruttivi da rilievo digitale (finora mai eseguiti del tutto o con esiti non soddisfacenti), che verifica la verosimiglianza impaginativa delle ipotesi integrative proposte. All’analisi della stratificazione informativa di ogni testimonianza epigrafica segue la ricognizione sullo stato attuale delle conoscenze archeologiche, per contestualizzare l’iscrizione e ipotizzare, ove possibile, un raccordo tra le evidenze archeologiche e la documentazione iscritta: l’originalità del presente lavoro sta infatti anche nella valorizzazione a fini documentari della relazione tra fonti epigrafiche, emergenze archeologiche e analisi topografiche, per desumere dalle evidenze archeologiche informazioni utili a migliorare l’esegesi testuale e trarre, di converso, dal dato epigrafico indicazioni per inserire l’edificio termale nella forma urbis o ambito territoriale di pertinenza, soprattutto quando l’ubicazione dell’apprestamento termale non sia nota o circostanziabile. Il corpus epigrafico è organizzato geograficamente, da nord a sud, e consta di ventitré testimonianze, divise per regiones.

As parcial conclusion of Fundation Seneca’s Project (15387/PHCS/10), we present a brief summary of the main minero-medicinal springs of the Iberian Peninsula which have been considered in the bibliography or in our field research as waters employed in the Roman Age. In each case, the explanation about its inclusion has been indicated.
Obviously, it is not a closed or definitive cathalogue, as well as we consider that new studies and future archaeological digs will allow us to complete it, but it can be an aissement of the current state of affairs of this study in the Iberian Peninsula
