Sedimentology of continental deposits

During the Jurassic, Sardinia was close to continental Europe. Emerged lands started from a single island forming in time a progressively sinking archipelago. This complex palaeogeographic situation gave origin to a diverse landscape with a variety of habitats. Collection-and literature-based palaeobotanical, palynological and lithofacies studies were carried out on the Genna Selole Formation for palaeoenvironmental interpretations. They evidence a generally warm and humid climate, affected occasionally by drier periods. Several distinct ecosystems can be discerned in this climate, including alluvial fans with braided streams (Laconi-Gadoni lithofacies), paralic swamps and coasts (Nurri-Escalaplano lithofacies), and lagoons and shallow marine environments (Ussassai-Perdasdefogu lithofacies). The non-marine environments were covered by extensive lowland and a reduced coastal and tidally influenced environment. Both the river and the upland/hinterland environments are of limited impact for the reconstruction. The difference between the composition of the palynological and palaeobotanical associations evidence the discrepancies obtained using only one of those proxies. The macroremains reflect the local palaeoenvironments better, although subjected to a transport bias (e.g. missing upland elements and delicate organs), whereas the palynomorphs permit to reconstruct the regional palaeoclimate. Considering that the flora of Sardinia is the southernmost of all Middle Jurassic European floras, this multidisciplinary study increases our understanding of the terrestrial environments during that period of time.

Während des Baus der Verbindung zwischen den Bundesautobahnen A4 und A72 bei Zwickau-Stenn waren Schichten des unteren Rotliegend großflächig aufgeschlossen. Eine detaillierte Aufnahme der geologischen Verhältnisse erfolgte im Rahmen einer Diplomkartierung durch Müller (2009), deren Ergebnisse sich in einem Normalprofil des Unterrotliegend für Zwickau-Stenn wiederfinden. Beginnend mit der fluviatil dominierten Sedimentation eines verflochtenen Flusssystems wurde innerhalb der unteren Härtensdorf-Formation der Übergang hin zu einem schwach fluviatil, teilweise palustrisch dominierten Sedimentationsgeschehen der Alluvial- und Überflutungsebenen dokumentiert. Gröberklastische Sequenzen mit fining-up-Tendenz, Schlammstromsedimente einer proximalen Fazies, unterbrechen episodisch die Sedimentation. Feine Aschenlagen belegen zur oberen Härtensdorf-Formation hin ein Einsetzen vulkanischer Aktivität. Eine markante Änderung des Sedimentationsgeschehens mit Auftreten mehrerer grobklastischer Schüttungen sowie Wechsel von Grau- in Rotfazies wird als Übergang zur Planitz-Formation interpretiert, in der zahlreiche pyroklastische Horizonte ausgehalten werden konnten. Feinlaminierte, fossilführende, abwechselnd in Grau- und Rotfazies ausgebildete Ton- bis Schluffsteine werden als Ablagerungen des Niederplanitz-Seehorizontes interpretiert. Abgeschlossen wird die vulkanosedimentäre Schichtenfolge der Planitz-Formation durch den Planitz-Melaphyr. Im Hangenden befand sich eine Wechselfolge von Kristall- und Aschentuffen, die der Leukersdorf-Formation zugerechnet werden. Offen bleibt die Frage, ob eine der am vermuteten Übergang Härtensdorf-/Planitz-Formation abgelagerte Pyroklastitsequenz dem Grüna-Tuff-Horizont oder Teilen davon entspricht.
Die durch Meyer am Aufschluss geborgenen und hier dokumentierten Florenfunde entstammen einer allochthonen Taphozönose. Dass der Härtensdorf-Formation eingeschaltete „Wilde Kohlengebirge“ enthielt
meso- bis xerophile Florenelemente in Compression-Erhaltung. Mit mehreren sterilen Zweigen der walchienartigen Konifere Culmitzschia speciosa gelang deren Erstnachweis in der Härtensdorf-Formation. Die aus den Ton- und Schluffsteinen der Planitz-Formation geborgenen Florenreste zeigen teilweise Compression-Erhaltung, teilweise aber auch Erhaltung dreidimensionaler Morphologie und anatomischer Details wie Epidermiszellen, Drüsen und Hydathoden. Überliefert sind sowohl meso- als auch hygrophile Florenelemente. Markant ist die aus stratigrafisch vergleichbarer Position bekannte, grün-mineralische Erhaltung der Fossilreste, die auf ein Delessit-ähnliches Chlorit-Mineral zurückzuführen ist. Die Aufsammlung ergänzt und erweitert die Kenntnis zur Flora des stratigrafisch wie räumlich unmittelbar benachbarten, durch Kogan et al. (2008) bearbeiteten Aufschlusses des Niederplanitz-Seehorizontes bei Zwickau-Planitz. Das betrifft insbesondere weitere Funde der bislang nur vereinzelt für das Chemnitz-Becken nachgewiesenen Farne Oligocarpia leptophylla und Nemejcopteris feminaeformis. Das erstmals für das Chemnitz-Becken diagnostizierte Vorkommen von Dicksonites cf. sterzelii, müsste durch weitere Funde verifiziert werden. Ebenfalls erstmals nachgewiesen für das Chemnitz-Becken wurde das Vorkommen von Sphenopteris mathetii. Mehrere Pecopteris/Scolecopteris-Fiederchen werden nachgewiesen, z.T. mit Erhaltung von Epidermiszellen oder Hydathoden. Nur wenige davon können mit Scolecopteris arborescens in Verbindung gebracht werden. Aufgrund der Erhaltung ist die Artbestimmung der mit den Psaroniales-Baumfarnen inVerbindung gebrachten Fiederchen oft nicht möglich. Der im Aufschluss gefundene C. tuberculata-Strobilus dürfte zu einer der dekorativsten und besterhaltenen Stücke der Art aus dem Chemnitz-Becken zählen. Die geologisch-paläobotanische Dokumentation des Aufschlusses Zwickau-Stenn führt die Reihe neuerer Arbeiten zur Entwicklung des Unterrotliegend des Chemitz-Beckens fort und ergänzt den zuletzt durch Schneider et al. (2012) zusammengefassten Kenntnisstand.

Mineralogy of outcropping Neogene mudrock samples in the Sitakund structure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Mineralogically, the surface Neogene mudrocks comprise illite, kaolinite, chlorite with lesser amount of smectite among clay minerals, whereas quartz, feldspar, dolomite and traces of pyrite constitute the non-clay fraction. Illite and kaolinite are the most abundant minerals among clay portion, on the other hand, the dominant non-clay mineral is quartz. The Neogene mudrocks are enriched in illite with progressive older sediments from flank to the axial region of the anticline. The ongoing decrease of the smectite clays from younger to older sediments and complete disappearance at the most older mudrocks (axial part of the structure) may have been accountable for the occurrence of the diagenetic illite. It is suggested that surface sediments analysis validate the burial diagenesis of Neogene mudrocks at greater depths (≥ 3000 m).

The study of palaeosols, coupled with the classical methods of process sedimentology, is increasingly becoming a powerful tool for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. The intrinsic complementarity of these two methods, which record the effects of processes developing over different periods of time, allows to improve the detail of facies analysis. This type of approach has actually never been adopted for the Upper Valdarno Basin, which is one of the best-known continen- tal Plio-Pleistocene basins of the Northern Apennines. The aim of this paper is to document the existence of pedogenized intervals within the Upper Valdarno basin fill and to describe and charac- terize them in terms of sedimentary and pedogenic processes. Thus we tested this approach on four stratigraphic intervals, selected within the whole succession because of their particular significance in the basin history. Deposits have been described and interpreted in terms of sedimentary facies and pedologic characteristics, with par- ticular attention on the inferred relative temporal relationships between sedimentary and pedogenic processes. This led to several considerations about landscape stability and evolution, accommoda- tion and sedimentation rates, which are not commonly possible with the analysis of single-event deposits.

Caves have yielded some of the most globally important archaeological sequences, but often their interpretation has suffered from assumptions about cave sedimentary processes. Caves contain distinctive sedimentary environments: this has major implications for the understanding of contained archaeological materials. This paper describes and analyses the Holocene sediments in the Haua Fteah, a sequence regarded as essentially continuous by the original excavator. 50 years after it was first excavated the Haua’s Epipalaeolithic to post-Classical chronological range and rich finds make it still the key Holocene archaeological site in North Africa. The reassessment shows, however, that the sequence is strongly discontinuous and this has major implications for the reinterpretation of the site, as the highly-resolved archaeological record is thus likely to reflect a series of brief occupations, rather than continuous human activity. As with many caves, the sedimentary record in the Haua Fteah is an extremely sensitive indicator of environments and processes in the wider landscape. Secure understanding of sedimentary process, from analysis of the highly individual records found in caves, is essential for full understanding of their contained archaeology.

Certain issues that includes stresses, floods, seismic loads could be observed inevitable and unpredictable in terms of occurrence, ultimately effect the functionality and life span for any Reservoir. Another important factor, which ultimately and strappingly influences any robust Reservoir and its storage capacity is Sedimentation. Appraisal of quantity of sediment and application of proper remedial measures could significantly sustain and enhance the storage capacity of the reservoir. This study primarily deals on evaluating the annual sediment deposit in Sri Ram Sagar Project’s Reservoir using Arc SWAT (Soil and Water Analysis Tool), a plug-in of Arc GIS 10.4. The attained results from this tool are then compared with Godavari Sediment Year Book (2015-16) for validation. Also, the expedient life of this reservoir is calculated using Gill’s Equation. Eventually, the variance analysis for a difference in deposited sediment and inflow and runoff is evaluated using Anova Analysis and the results are concluded.

We study the volcaniclastic lithofacies interbedded between siliciclastic and carbonate sediments of Cenozoic-Quaternary age (8.7 Ma to 7,000 BP) in Argamasilla and Calzada-Moral basins (Central Spain). The siliciclastic and carbonate deposits correspond to fluvio-lacustrine sedimentary environments. The volcanic materials consist of primary and reworked volcaniclastic successions sourced from the Campo de Calatrava Volcanic Field. Pyroclastic deposits are related to monogenetic and small-volume volcanic centres, such as scoria cones, tuff rings and maars, corresponding to Strombolian and phreatomagmatic eruptive styles.
