Biodegradable blend films from rice starchechitosan were developed by casting film-solution on leveled trays. The influence of the ratio of starch and chitosan (2:1, 1.5:1, 1:1, and 0.5:1) on the mechanical properties, water barrier properties, and miscibility of biodegradable blend films was investigated. The biodegradable blend film from rice starchechitosan showed an increase in tensile strength (TS), water vapor permeability (WVP), lighter color and yellowness and a decreasing elongation at the break (E ), and film solubility (FS) after incorporation of chitosan. The introduction of chitosan increased the crystalline peak structure of starch film; however, too high chitosan concentration yielded phase separation between starch and chitosan. The amino group band of the chitosan molecule in the FTIR spectrum shifted from 1541.15 cm À1 in the chitosan film to 1621.96 cm À1 in the biodegradable blend films. These results pointed out that there was a molecular miscibility between these two components. The properties of rice starchechitosan biodegradable blend film and selected biopolymer and synthetic polymer films were compared; the results demonstrated that rice starchechitosan biodegradable blend film had mechanical properties similar to the other chitosan films. However, the water vapor permeability of rice starchechitosan biodegradable blend film was characterized by relatively lower water vapor permeability than chitosan films but higher than polyolefin.

The objective of this research was to analyse the distribution pattern of proximate composition and fatty acid profiles in different portions of Asian catfish (Pangasius bocourti). The lipid content was found amongst different portions, ranging from 2.95% to 93.32%, being lowest in the caudal-dorsal portion and highest in the viscera. Protein, moisture and ash contents were inversely proportional to the lipid content amongst the body portion. There was no specific tendency for the changes of each fatty acid composition from the different portions. Monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) was the most predominant fatty acid found in all tissues, ranging from 32.7% to 39.9%, followed by saturated fatty acids (SFA) ranged from 30.2% to 36.5% of total fatty acid, whereas the total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content was the lowest, ranging from 14.8% to 24.0%. This study revealed that the proximate compositions and fatty acids deposition in Asian catfish varied markedly throughout the body portion.

Malto-dextrin, the mixture of glucose, maltose and dextrin is used in food industry, as bulking agent, fat replacer, and for medical/nutritional purpose. It is generally produced from cane sugar, maize (starch) etc. by acid or enzymatic hydrolysis. But presently its production rate is not so high. Malto-dextrin production from broken rice, a waste, is very beneficial because of its low cost and availability. In this paper, the objective of this study was to maximize the malto-dextrin production from rice starch by acid hydrolysis and also the effect of particle size on production of malto-dextrin. The rice starch was hydrolyzed by Hydrochloric acid (HCl). The range of the factors employed were particle mesh size, gelatinization pressure and time, saccharification time. The optimized gelatinization condition was 15psig for 30 minutes. The optimized acid hydrolysis condition was 67oC for 30 minutes. China is a major centre for rice domestication, where starch grain analysis has been widely applied to archaeological grinding tools to gain information about plant use by ancient Chinese societies. However, few rice starch grains have been identified to date. To understand this apparent scarcity of starch grains from rice, dry-and wet-grinding experiments with stone tools were carried out on four types of cereals: rice (Oryza sativa L.), foxtail millet (Setaria italica), Job's tears (Coix lacryma-jobi L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). The results reveal that dry-grinding produces significant damage to starches to the point where they may be undetected in archaeological samples, while wet-grinding causes only slight morphological changes to the starch grains. Moreover, rice starch grains have the most substantial alterations from dry-grinding, possibly impeding their identification. These findings provide a possible means to explain the relative scarcity of rice starch grains recovered from archaeological grinding tools, which it is suggested was caused by the use of the dry-grinding technique. Therefore, it is suggested that rice starch grains have been likely underrepresented in the archaeological record, and previous interpretations of starch analyses need to be reconsidered.

A study was conducted to examine the culture and growth performance of S. platensis in three different concentrations (25%, 50% and 100%) of digested liquid rice starch media (DLRSM) with 0.2 g/L urea and Kosaric medium (KM) as control for a period of three months from March to May 2018. Each experiment was done in triplicates for a period of 14 days. The growth rate of S. platensis was found to vary with different concentrations of the medium. The cell weight of S. platensis was attained to highest 12.42 mg/L (dry weight) in KM followed by 11.26 mg/L, 8.35 mg/L and 9.11 mg/L in 25%, 50% and 100% of DLRSM, respectively on the 10th day of culture period. Similar trend also observed in case of chlorophyll a content of S. platensis. The proximate composition of rice starch was analyzed. The percentage of moisture, protein, lipid, ash, crude fiber and nitrogen free extract (NFE) were95.1, 0.2616, 0.1055, 0.1097, 0.1468 and 3.9669, respectively on the basis of moisture (%) and 4.59, 5.70, 2.30, 2.39, 3.20 and 86.41, respectively on the basis of dry matter (%). The results on the growth performance showed that the growth of S. platensis was significantly (P<0.01) higher when grown in 25% concentration of DLRSM than other concentrations in 50% and 100% of DLRSM. The physico-chemical parameters viz. light intensity (2685 to 2773 lux/m2/s), temperature (29.6 to 31.5°C), pH (8.3 to 9.9), alkalinity (1150 to 3032 mg/L), Nitrate-N (1.32 to 6.30 mg/L) and phosphate-P (9.75 to 61.50 mg/L) were within optimum level during the culture period.

To prepare and characterize alcohol-alkaline modified rice starch (MRS) as a disintegrant for tablets.
The preparation of MRS was carried out using 3 M NaOH and 40 % ethanol solution. Characterization carried out for MRS include morphology, swelling capacity, thermal and pasting
properties. Direct-compressed tablets (DCT) containing either propranolol hydrochloride (PPNL) or
hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) were evaluated for hardness, friability, disintegration time and drug release.The microstructure of MRS was different in shape and dimension from that of rice starch (RS).The absence of gelatinization endotherm and FT-IR spectral peak for MRS correlated with change in MRS structure and arrangement. MRS showed significantly higher swelling capacity (p < 0.05) than RS, and also proved to be a disintegrant in DCT. The disintegration time of the tablets containing MRS was lower in the presence of large particles (3.55 ± 0.56 min); high content of MRS (1.03 ± 0.06 min); low content of lubricant (3.16 ± 0.44 min); water soluble filler (1.55 ± 0.16 min for Super-tab®); and model drug (0.84 ± 0.09 min for HCTZ) (p < 0.05). MRS exhibits improved water solubility and swelling capacity compared with RS, and is thus a good disintegrant for direct-compressed tablet formulations, especially in the presence of water insoluble fillers.
