Version: C Total number of pages: 30 This deliverable defines the quality and evaluation strategy and criteria to be used subsequently in the project for assessing the Design Support Environment (DSE) and the Internet services under consideration. The deliverable describes the quality approach of the Consortium, with emphasis in the aspects related to software development. It also describes our evaluation strategy, including the evaluation plan, and the guidelines and recommendations to be included.

In this paper we characterize and model the cost of rework in a Component Factory (CF) organization. A CF is responsible for developing and packaging reusable software components. Data was collected on corrective maintenance activities for the Generalized Support Software reuse asset library located at the Flight Dynamics Division of NASA'S GSFC. We then constructed a predictive model of the cost of rework using the C4.5 system for generating a logical classification model. The predictor variables for the model are measures of internal software product attributes. The model demonstrates good prediction accuracy, and can be used by managers to allocate resources for corrective maintenance activities. Furthermore, we used the model to generate proscriptive coding guidelines to improve programming practices so that the cost of rework can be reduced in the future. The general approach we have used is applicable to other environments.

In this paper, we consider a deficient production system with permissible shortages. The production system consists of a unique machine that manufactures a number of products that a part of them are imperfect in form of rework or scrap. These defective products are identified by 100% inspection during production, then, they are whether reworked or disposed of after normal production process. Like real-world production systems, there are diverse kinds of errors creating dissimilar breakdown severity and rework. Moreover, reworks have non-zero setup times that makes the problem closer to real-world instances where machines require some preparations before starting a new production cycle. Thus, we introduce an economic production quantity (EPQ) problem for an imperfect manufacturing system with non-zero setup times for rework items. The rework items are classified into several categories based on their type of failure and rework rate. The aim of this study is to obtain optimum production time and shortage in each period that minimizes total inventory system costs. Convexity of the objective function and exact solution procedure for the current nonlinear optimization problem are also proposed. Finally, a numerical example is proposed to assess efficiency and validation of proposed algorithm.

The present paper considers the effect of imperfect quality items on a production system which further undergoes inspection and rework. The demand of the product is price reliant. Two situations to handle the imperfect items are analyzed: selling them at a reduced price and reworking them. The demand is assumed to meet with perfect products in either case. Further, the study incorporates the carbon-emissions borne during production of goods and their holding in the inventory system. The model aims at maximizing the profit function by jointly optimizing mark-up price and production quantity. To demonstrate model characteristics, numerical and sensitivity analysis are also presented.

The Tracker project is studying rework in systems engineering projects. Our hypothesis is that providing decision makers with information about previous relevant decisions will assist in reducing the amount of rework in a project. We propose an architecture for the flexible integration of the tools implementing the variety of theories and models used in the project. The techniques include ethnographic analysis, natural language processing, activity theory, norm analysis, and speech and handwriting recognition. In this paper, we focus on the natural language processing components, and describe experiments which demonstrate the feasibility of our text mining approach.

A plethora of studies have been undertaken to identify the causes of disputes so as to determine the most appropriate prevention and resolution strategies. While it is widely known what the main causes of dispute are, they still remain prevalent in the Australian construction industry. This is because there is a need to better understand the complexity and interplay between causal variables. Using data derived from the literature a conceptual causal model of construction disputes is developed. The model identifies the key causal variables and pathogens that can contribute to disputes.

In this research article, we develop an EPQ model for imperfect items with inflation. In this model demand, deterioration rate and production rate are constant. Shortage is permitted and completely backlogged. There are two type of inspection error. Type I error is screening for non-defects and type II for defects items. In this model there are rework on screening items. There are many type of cost like carrying cost, penalty cost, rework cost, scrapping cost. This model is developed to minimize the total inventory cost by optimizing the lot size and backordering quantity. Numerical example is used to optimize the lot size and backorder quantity. Sensitivity analysis is also used for the better experience of the relation between total inventory cost and parameter used in this model.

The building and construction industry makes a major contribution to the New South Wales (NSW) economy, with an annual input of 7.6% during 2010 that is projected to rise to 8.4% in 2020. Irrespective of the sector's growth potential, it is experiencing a severe skills shortage across a range of professions including building certification. Interestingly, the certification sector and the regulatory environment in which it operates is yet to receive rigorous attention in academia and industry. In the context of NSW, the role of the accredited certifier is multifaceted and involves confirming that building work complies with environmental planning controls and the National Construction Code. The Building Professionals Board (BPB) is the statutory body responsible for accrediting these professionals. The BPB is partnering with the University of Newcastle to ameliorate the current skills shortage through the development of an evaluation instrument regarding: certifiers seeking to upgrade to a higher level of accreditation but who do not have a recognised qualification and/or are unable to obtain the practical experience relevant to progression; and associated professionals who, although not accredited, wish to become a certifier but lack the recognised qualifications and/or experience.
