Relative Truth

The paper gives an analysis of sentences with predicates of personal taste and epistemic modals in terms of generic simulation. It arguing that such sentences involve first-person-based genericity and thus the very same semantics as sentences with generic 'one'.

The problem of future contingents is one of the most ancient and debated puzzles in Western philosophy, and Supervaluationism is, today, one of the most prominent solutions to the problem. Recently, John MacFarlane has carried a well-known criticism to Supervaluationism (and all other standard approaches to future contingents) and put forward a new solution of the problem of future contingents, which is known as Double Time Reference Theory (DTRT). Here, we compare DTRT with Supervaluationist semantics, and we show that the success of MacFarlane's criticism crucially depends on the expressivity of the language adopted. Once a reasonable expressive power is granted, however, MacFarlane's criticism no longer applies.

Eine der grundlegenden Motivationen, eine relativistische Theorie zu vertreten, besteht darin das Phänomen des "faultless disagreement" zu erklären. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Verwendung von "Fehlerlosigkeit" bei Kölbel. Obwohl MacFarlane der Meinung ist, dass Kölbel einen normativen Begriff von Fehlerlosigkeit verwendet, kommt diese Arbeit zum Schluss, dass Kölbel "Fehlerlosigkeit" stärker interpretiert: Fehlerlosigkeit ist eine hinreichende Bedingung für das Erlangen von wahren Überzeugungen. Dies folgt aus der angedeuteten Formalisierung von Kölbels Position.

Celem artykułu jest zrekonstruowanie mało znanej formy relatywizmu poznawczego: zaproponowanego przez Gonzalo Munévara relatywizmu ewolucyjnego. Relatywizm ten głosi, że wszelkie odmiany realizmu zakładające konwergencję są nie do utrzymania. Relatywizm ten głosi też, iż wyprowadzenie wszystkich konsekwencji, jakie posiada koncepcja epistemologii ewolucyjnej, nie prowadzi do tzw. realizmów wewnętrznych, lecz do wyrafinowanej formy relatywizmu na wszystkich płaszczyznach poznania. Munévar argumentuje, że wyniki badań nad percepcją i inteligencją wspierają relatywizm ewolucyjny, a jego stanowisko jest zgodne z ogólnym podejściem przyjmowanym w neuronaukach. Artykuł kończą sugestie dotyczące prawdy jako zgodności z „rzeczywistością”, ponieważ, zdaniem kolumbijskiego filozofa, prawda jako idea regulatywna wymaga rewizji.

In this paper I focus on a recently discussed phenomenon illustrated by sentences containing predicates of taste: the phenomenon of " perspectival plurality " , whereby sentences containing two or more predicates of taste have readings according to which each predicate pertains to a different perspective. This phenomenon has been shown to be problematic for (at least certain versions of) relativism. My main aim is to further the discussion by showing that the phenomenon extends to other perspectival expressions than predicates of taste and by proposing a general solution to the problem raised by it on behalf of the relativist. The core claim of the solution (" multiple indexing ") is that utterances of sentences containing perspectival expressions should be evaluated with respect to (possibly infinite) sequences of perspective parameters.
