The incidence of plate-boundary earthquakes across 3 prospective tectonic segments at the Alaska subduction zone (ASZ) in the late Holocene is reconstructed from geological evidence of abrupt land-level change and archaeological evidence of discontinuities in occupation of native villages. Bracketing radiocarbon ages on uplifted and down-dropped coastal deposits indicate that great earthquakes likely ruptured the plate interface in the eastern segment (Prince William Sound [PWS]) about 800, 1400, 2200–2300, 2600–2700, 3100–3200, and 3600–3700 cal BP. Evidence for an event about 1900 yr ago, and the possibility that the 2600–2700 cal BP event was a closely spaced series of 3 earthquakes, is restricted to parts of Cook Inlet. Geological evidence from the central (Kenai [KEN]) segment is fragmentary, but indicates that this segment likely ruptured about 1400 yr ago and in the triple event about 2600–2700 yr ago. The Consensus for Experimental Design in Electromyography (CEDE) project is an international initiative which aims to guide decision-making in recording, analysis, and interpretation of electromyographic (EMG) data. The quality of the EMG recording, and validity of its interpretation depend on many characteristics of the recording setup and analysis procedures. Different electrode types (i.e., surface and intramuscular) will influence the recorded signal and its interpretation. This report presents a matrix to consider the best electrode type selection for recording EMG, and the process undertaken to achieve consensus. Four electrode types were considered: (1) conventional surface electrode, (2) surface matrix or array electrode, (3) fine-wire electrode, and (4) needle electrode. This seminar explores the examples the concepts of humanism, perverted humanism and self-awareness in the novella Heart of Darkness by Josef Conrad. The preferred humanism in this seminar is self-awareness. It also explores the darkness in the human mind which can be illumined through humanism. Human traits like nobility and perversion are depicted in the characters of Marlow, Kurtz and the Accountant as well as the Russian which are occasioned by benevolence or malevolence, traits that are inherent in the mind of Man.
The theoretical framework used in the delineation of the types of Humanism is New Historicism. The benefits of humanism such as nobility, kindness, charity and humility are traits that make man transcend over inherent behaviors such as selfishness, malevolence which are all aspects of perverted humanism. The author also uses symbolic names to portray humanism.
The seminar concludes that empathy and restraint are dimensions of humanism explored in the Heart of Darkness which promote human rights, communal living and common good. Although capitalism is preferred to communalism, financial constraints reduces a person’s participation in capitalist humanism. This writer recommends that the practice of empathy and restraint is required for social inclusion to avoid marginalization and ensure the rights of all men are protected.

Bound by kinship (they were distant cousins), Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and Johann Gottfried Walther (1684-1748) met in Weimar. Bach, after a brief initial stay in 1703, worked there as an organist and later as Konzertmeister at the court of Duke Wilhelm Ernst from 1708 to 1717; Walther, by contrast, served as the organist of the Stadtkirche from 1707 until his death.

This CD aims to bridge the gap between these two personalities by presenting four distinct thematic sections: the so-called “free organ pieces”; the chorale preludes; the transcriptions of concertos by Italian composers; and pieces inspired by compositions from Italian authors.

For the “free pieces,” we have selected Walther’s Toccata and Fugue in C major and Bach’s Pièce d’orgue in G major (BWV 572). The Toccata and Fugue in C major merges Italian and German traditions. The Toccata is modeled on Frescobaldi’s Toccatas over pedals, where large imitative sections are built on harmonic pedals of the fundamental degrees of the key. However, unlike Frescobaldi’s model, Walther follows the Toccata with a Fugue of instrumental character, adhering to the formal pairing of the “Toccata and Fugue” typical of German tradition. Bach’s Pièce d’orgue, as suggested by the title, seems to look more towards France. This recording includes the version from the manuscript Mus.Ms.P.801 of the Berlin State Library, an autograph by Walther. It presents an earlier editorial state than the final version of the Pièce, as Bach’s autograph does not survive. Compared to the final version of BWV 572, Walther’s version shows some differences. For example, the central section of the piece is transmitted without the prescription of an obbligato pedal and with the agogic indication “gayement” instead of “gravement,” found in the later version. The absence of an independent pedal part aligns this section more closely with the French Plein jeu model, an organ genre with manualiter polyphonic writing known to both Bach and Walther. They were familiar with the Livres d’orgue by authors such as Nicolas de Grigny, Pierre Du Mage, and André Raison. The first and third sections of the Pièce, based on the repetition of a single musical figure, evoke the brilliant passages of northern keyboard Toccatas (e.g., Johann Adam Reincken).

Moving to the chorale preludes, we touch upon a crucial aspect: the Lutheran culture in which Bach and Walther were immersed. For a total of four preludes, two chorale melodies elaborated by both composers (Das alte Jahr vergangen ist and Jesu meine Freude) were considered. Das alte Jahr vergangen ist is a chorale sung, according to various hymnals, at the end or beginning of the year; Jesu meine Freude, however, has no specific liturgical destination. Bach’s two pieces are from the Orgelbüchlein, a famous but unfinished collection of chorale preludes, mostly crafted during his Weimar years. In Bach’s elaboration (BWV 614), Das alte Jahr vergangen ist is an “ornate chorale,” where the melody is embellished and highlighted by a solo register. It is a piece rich in chromatic passages, whose poignant and melancholic character might be read as a meditation on the passage of time and the “danger” (“Gefahr”) faced during the year, overcome thanks to divine protection. Walther’s elaboration, however, is structured as a “chorale motet” in two sections corresponding to two expositions of a theme derived from the first phrase of the cantus firmus. Characterized by vocal-style polyphonic writing, the piece was specially recorded using the Vox-humana register. The chorale Jesu meine Freude is also treated differently by the two authors. For his piece (BWV 610), Bach uses a sort of pedal ostinato that counterpoints the chorale melody entrusted to the upper voice. Noteworthy is the final measure containing a diminished third interval (A-flat / F-sharp) in the pedal part and a triple false relation (F-sharp / F) among the parts. Since BWV 610 belongs to the Christmas chorale cycle of the Orgelbüchlein, could this measure be a reference to the future Passion awaiting the Child? Walther’s version of Jesu meine Freude is not the extensive Partita but a manualiter version where the chorale melody, in large note values and in the upper voice, is exposed alternately with imitative episodes. Here again, the discreet presence of ornaments suggests a piece influenced by French music.

The two recorded Concertos are transcriptions of violin and orchestra concertos by Antonio Vivaldi. Bach transcribes Concerto RV 230 (BWV 972), and Walther transcribes Concerto RV 275. These pages testify to the interest Italian music aroused in Weimar in the early 18th century. In this regard, one notable figure is Prince Johann Ernst, for whom Walther was a musical tutor. Johann Ernst, who died before reaching twenty in 1715, studied in Utrecht and, after becoming acquainted with Italian music prints produced there, might have introduced them to his homeland. Specifically, Concerto RV 230 is from L’Estro armonico (Amsterdam, 1711), while Concerto RV 275 is from the second part (Libro II) of a miscellany of Concerti a cinque (Amsterdam, 1717) by various authors (besides Vivaldi: Albinoni, Veracini, Predieri, and others). In the recording, different approaches to the Tutti – Solo contrast were chosen for the two Concertos. For Walther, both keyboards of the organ were used: the Hauptwerk for the Tutti and the Oberwerk for the Soli. For Bach, only the Hauptwerk was used.

Also related to the Italian environment are the Fugue on a Theme by Corelli (BWV 579) and the Variations on a Continuo Bass by Signor Corelli. The subject and countersubject of the Fugue derive from the second movement (Vivace) of Corelli’s Sonata quarta, op. 3 (Rome, 1689); the Variations are based on the Prelude of Sonata XI, op. 5 (Rome, 1700). Bach’s Fugue, a remarkable example of the integration between Bachian and Corellian counterpoint, was recorded mainly from the text of the fourth volume of the Peters edition (a copy by W. F. Bach?). Some details, however, come from the manuscript Ms. III.8.18 (Leipzig City Libraries). For the Variations – original title: Alcune Variationi Sopr’un Basso Continuo del Sign.r Corelli – the manuscript Mus.ms.autogr. Walther, J.G.3 (Berlin State Library) was followed. The first Variation, a keyboard elaboration of Corelli’s Prelude, is followed by three more based on the same bass line. The set of four pieces exhibits a manualiter writing with rather harpsichord-like traits.

Леся Українка виявила себе не лише як видатна поетеса та культурна діячка, а й як одна з перших саундпродюсерок в Україні. Її активна участь у закупівлі  обладнання,  організації  записів  та  продюсуванні  фольклорних експедицій  свідчить  про  глибоке  розуміння  важливості  збереження національної музичної спадщини із використанням аудіотехнологій. Завдяки її технічним  знанням  і  організаційним  зусиллям  були  створені  записи кобзарських дум і лірницьких пісень, що стали важливими джерелами для подальших наукових досліджень та відтворення українського фольклору. Як саундпродюсерка,  поетеса  прагнула  максимально  точно  здійснити аудіофіксацію для подальшого відтворення та поширення задля можливості точного виконання іншими співаками. Отже, можна вважати, що Леся Українка стояла у витоків українського саундпродюсування.

Conrad coerces the audience to address the heart of darkness at the core of humanity. He delivers the nature of this journey through a flux of sensations and impressions epitomized through the inner thoughts and feelings of Marlow. Heart of Darkness is a highly allusive and impressionistic story. Conrad applies interwoven allusions and a modernist technique, Impressionism, to depict the psychological confusion of Marlow as well as to delineate aspects of a modern theme, colonization. Thus, through these two techniques, the paper will deduce the corners of colonization and hypocrisy of the Europeans, as well as uncover a journey into the darkness, the corruption, the unknown (the other), and the ambiguous spin on the nature of human understanding.

Purpose: Portal imaging is the most important quality assurance procedure for monitoring the reproducibilitytup geometry in radiation therapy. The role of portal imaging has become even more critical in recent years due to the migration of three-dimensional (3D) treatment planning technology, including highprecision conformal therapy, from the research setting to routine clinical practice. Unfortunately, traditional methods for acquiring and interpreting portal images suffer from a number of deficiencies that contribute to the well-documented observation that many setup errors go undetected, and some persist for a clinically significant portion of the prescribed dose. Significant improvements in both accuracy and efficiency of detecting setup errors can, in principle, be achieved by using automatic image registration for on-line screening of images obtained from electronic portal imaging devices (EPIDs). Methods and Materials: This article presents recent developments in a method called core-based image analysis that shows great promise for achieving the desired improvements in error detection. Core-based image analysis is a fundamental computer vision method that is capable of exploiting the full power of EPIDs by providing for on-line detection of setup errors via automatic registration of user-selected anatomical structures. We describe a robust method for automatic portal image registration based on core analysis and demonstrate an approach for assessing both accuracy and precision of registration methods using realistic, digitally reconstructed portal radiographs (DRPRs) where truth is known. Results: Automatic core-based analysis of a set of 20 DRPRs containing known, random field positioning errors was performed for a patient undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. In all cases, the reported translation was within 1 mm of the actual translation with mean absolute errors of 0.3 mm and standard deviations of 0.3 mm. In all cases, the reported rotation was within 0.6" of the actual rotation with a mean absolute error of 0.18" and a standard deviation of 0.23". Conclusion: Our results, using digitally reconstructed portal radiographs that closely resemble clinical portal images, suggest that automatic core-based registration is suitable as an on-line screening tool for detecting and quantifying patient setup errors.

Three equations derived from a close exponential glacier-climate relationship at the equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) of Norwegian glaciers have been utilized and implemented in a geographical information system (GIS). The first equation enables calculation of the minimum altitude of areas climatically suited for glacier formation at present, and is termed the altitude of instantaneous glacierization (AIG). Equation (2) is based on the ‘principle of terrain adaptation’, enabling quantification of the glacial buildup sensitivity (GBS) in an area. The third equation calculates the theoretical climatic (instrumental) temperature-precipitation ELA (CTP-ELA) in presently non-glaciated areas by combining GBS with terrain altitude. The presented approach is primarily intended for palaeoclimatic analyses of former glacial records, and is tested here based on a plot of 122 temperature stations and 197 precipitation stations during the climate normal period 1961-1990 which has been recalculate...

A personal diary may be more appropriate than a questionnaire for assessing self-reported current use of hormone therapy (estrogens, progestagens, or their combination); however, use of a questionnaire is more feasible and less expensive. The authors compared both methods for 16,060 Swedish women aged 45-73 years from the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study (baseline, 1991-1996). In a reliability analysis, the authors investigated the agreement (kappa value) between the questionnaire and the diary regarding current hormone therapy use (yes vs. no), studying the ability to replicate results whether or not they were correct. They also explored associations between discrepancy and individual characteristics. A validity analysis was conducted to determine whether use of the questionnaire achieved an outcome without systematic error (i.e., high specificity and sensitivity); the personal diary was considered the "gold standard." Agreement between both methods was high: 95.5% (kappa = 0.840). The sensitivity was 84.9% and the specificity 97.7%. Higher body mass index and being a widow were associated with agreement, whereas age (50-59 years), use of anxiolytics/hypnotics or opiates, high alcohol consumption, past smoking, and higher educational level were associated with discrepancy. Compared with a personal diary, a simple self-administered questionnaire is a valid method for assessing current use of hormone therapy.

V 21. století se stále větší měrou prosazuje mezioborová věda Music Information Retrieval (MIR) reprezentovaná mezinárodní výzkumnou komunitou International Society for Music Information Retrieval (ISMIR), "jejíž rozsah sahá napříč obory jako matematická informatika, hudební věda, kognitivní vědy, knihovnictví a informační vědy i elektrotechnika. Komunita odráží rozmanitost vědeckých oborů a úrovní, profesních příslušností a kulturního zázemí". 1 Příbuznou nebo přímo do MIR prolínající se dílčí disciplínou je pak analýza hudebního výkonu, Music Performance Analysis (MPA). Desde la perspectiva de la epidemiología sociocultural, se analiza cómo en Ocotepec, Chiapas, los saberes maternos sobre las enfermedades diarreicas y las infecciones respiratorias agudas, estudiados a partir de las representaciones sociales y prácticas de atención, inciden en la búsqueda de atención apropiada. Los resultados demuestran que no hay un reconocimiento de los signos de alarma de deshidratación y neumonía, las complicaciones más graves, lo que causa defunciones en niños menores de cinco años que pudieron evitarse con tratamientos adecuados, que no fueron accesibles debido a los procesos de medicalización y mercantilización de las prácticas médicas locales, y la falta de acceso a los servicios públicos de salud.

Color halftoning with stochastic processes such as error diffusion and stochastic screening eliminates the Moiré problems since the halftone dots created by these processes are relatively unstructured. This removes the constraints of the rotation angle that apply to conventional color halftoning with ordered dither. In this paper, a series of psychophysical experiments address the visibility of color halftone textures from different schemes of stochastic halftoning as well as Bayer's dithering. Specifically, color halftone patches are displayed on a monitor screen, and the distance at which an observer can confidently see the texture is identified. This distance is used as a measurement of the texture visibility of the corresponding halftone patch. The experimental design and setup will be outlined first, then the experiment results will be reported. A new metric for color halftone texture visibility is also proposed and it is tested with the experimental results.

This paper intends to explore the intrinsic interrelationship between geographical land (place) and the complexities of human trauma in Joseph Conrad's seminal novella _Heart of Darkness_. The novella is about a European voyager, Marlow, who, following his predecessor Kurtz's footsteps, sets out for a dangerous journey to Africa through the mysterious river Congo. Through its journey motif, the novella symbolizes a journey to the inner soul-or, the unfamiliar and dangerous spaces of human mind as well. The danger zones of human mind can have traumatic implications; because the characters' psychological journey through geographical Congo denotes an (en)counter with "geotrauma", as Rachel Pain (2020) puts it. Although both Kurtz and Marlow commit to their journey to the same destination, the two Europeans respond and react to the journey on different terms. Kurtz dies in the process but Marlow survives, returning home with the burden of horrific trauma. Such encounters show how the same place Congo, with its material and psychological quality, can trigger the "darkness" of human hearts differently. The paper critically observes and explains Kurtz and Marlow's coping mechanisms in the face of their place-based trauma. It also aspires to establish an interdisciplinary connection between English studies and psychology.

In this research palynology has been applied to the study of an adhesive beeswax compound found beneath one enamel of the medieval Evangelistary cover ‘Pace di Chiavenna’, ca 1000 years old and preserved for the last five centuries in the Treasury of the Collegiate Church of Chiavenna (Northern Italy). The purpose of this study was to test whether it is possible to determine the geographical area of wax collection and of the origin of the wooden support of the artefact, using the pollen imprint of plants and their related spatial ranges. Palynological analyses allowed the identification of 184 pollen grains belonging to 33 taxa. The reconstructed vegetation represents dry to humid meadows and pastures (e.g. Artemisia, Apiaceae, Campanula type, Poacaeae, Thalictrum, Asteroideae), wet areas (e.g. Alnus glutinosa type, Salix), woods or forests (e.g. Acer, Tilia, Picea, Castanea), shrublands (Ericaceae, Corylus) and arable fields or gardens (e.g. Cerealia type, Urtica, Plantago major). The Evangelistary cover has been attributed to the Ottonian art, developed especially in Germany, Eastern France and Northern Italy. On the basis of the palynological evidence from the beeswax, we can restrict the provenance area. A Northern Italian or Southern Prealpine origin seems likely since Castanea sativa was much more frequent south than north of the Alps. This geographic origin is corroborated by the material used for the support, made of Juglans regia (walnut), frequently planted in the region at that time. Moreover, the technique used to produce the wooden plate was widespread in Italy during the High Medieval period. The palynological evidence points to a very open, deeply human-affected environment, possibly around a city or a larger village in which the apiary was located. Inferences of this nature cannot be provided by other approaches such as wood or leather analyses; we thus conclude that palynology can provide unique insights into the origin of cultural treasures.

Introduction: Good recording practices are necessary for effective patient management. When high-quality data are available, success can be documented and corrective actions taken to address problems that are identified.

Objective: To assess the accuracy of record keeping of TB patients by field interviews

Methods: The study was conducted on a total of 326 patients residing in the area of PHC Verka and registered with District Tuberculosis Centre, Amritsar. House to house visits were done. Outcome of the patient according to the TB register and according to interview were compared.

Results: According to record out of 228 patients, the outcome of 105(46.10%), patients was cured, 105(46.10%) patients had completed their treatment, 10(4.40%) had defaulted, 6(2.6%) were failure and 2(0.9%) had transferred out. On interviewing the patients the outcome of 98(43%) was cured, 95(41.70%) were treatment completed, 29(12.70%), defaulted and 6(2.6%) were failure. Discrepancies were found between outcome recorded on TB register and as obtained on interviewing the patient. The treatment outcome according to record and outcome according to interview, was found to be statistically significant (p=0.005)

Conclusion: Present study reveals that there is an urgent need to strengthen performance of the programme by proper record-keeping and efficient supervision by district health officials.

The study carried out at the castle of Monzon (Huesca) while developing the Master Plan for the preservation of the site clearly aims at efficient interaction between different studies by several groups of experts in various disciplines. The various studies were coordinated jointly in order to offer a comprehensive analysis of the monument, intertwining approaches and points of views. Among the techniques used, thermography was especially interesting because of its flexibility and adaptability in several applications: from helping to identify materials to the detection of hidden pathologies. The efficiency of thermography for emphasizing different phenomena can only be improved by combining with other survey and analysis techniques. Synoptic plans allow these techniques to enrich the information available, reaching greater accuracy in determining materials and pathologies. Identifying continuity and discontinuity in Holocene hunter-gatherer burial sites is often challenging. Roonka, is the largest excavated burial area in Australia. Despite preliminary analysis in the 1970-1980s chronology was challenging given the complex record of dune formation, intrusive burials, erosion and exposure. As part of collaboration with the River Murray and Mallee Aboriginal Corporation, we have re-analysed the legacy data. We have combined three tools: 3D reconstruction and spatial analysis of the site; Bayesian analysis of the radiocarbon sequence, and archaeothanatology to gain a deeper understanding of the relationships between burials and dune formation and hence the connection between changes in burial practices and environmental change. Analysis confirms that the site was used as a burial place over the last 8000 years, but the burial record has been significantly impacted by erosion. The most likely cause of erosion is ENSO-driven climatic change. Other changes that are not coincident with climatic change but alter the intensity of site use were identified by tracing the number of burials over time. Analysis indicates a shift from occasional and specialised use to increasing use in the mid to Late-Holocene. We argue that burial practices became more diverse and demographically inclusive over time. In summary, our analysis clearly demonstrates that it was not a place for everybody all the time. The selection of 'who' and 'when' demonstrates access to and maintenance of a broader set of persistent burial places in the Murray Valley region during the Holocene.

Preverbal infants often vocalize in emotionally loaded situations, yet the communicative potential of these vocalizations is not well understood. The aim of our study was to assess how accurately adult listeners extract information about the eliciting situation from infant preverbal vocalizations. Vocalizations of 19 infants aged 5-10 months were recorded in 3 negative (Pain, Isolation, Demand for Food) and 3 positive (Play, Reunion, After Feeding) situations. The recordings were later rated by 333 adult listeners on the scales of emotional valence and intensity. Subsequently, the listeners assigned the eliciting situations in a forced choice task. Listeners were almost perfectly able to discriminate whether a recording came from a negative or a positive situation. Their discrimination may have been based on perceived valence as they consistently assigned higher valence when listening to positive, and lower valence when listening to negative, recordings. Ability to identify the particular situation within the negative or positive realm was substantially weaker, with only three of the six situations being discriminated above chance. The best discriminated situation, Play, was associated with high perceived intensity. The weak qualitative discrimination of negative situations seemed to be based on graded perception of negative recordings, from the most intense and unpleasant (assigned to Pain) to the least intense and least unpleasant (assigned to Demand for Food). Parenthood and younger age, but not gender of listeners, had weak positive effects on the accuracy of judgments. Our results indicate that adults almost flawlessly distinguish positive and negative infant sounds, but are rather inaccurate regarding identification of the specific needs of the infant and may normally employ other sensory channels to gain this information.

It addresses the darkness within and advocates that only humanism can illuminate it. Marlow, the protagonist, is an idealist, who embarks on a journey he deems virtuous, however, he becomes disillusioned by the inhumanity of man. This treatise covers humanism, perverted humanism, and idealistic humanism as well as idealism, all of which are depicted in the novella and through the characters of Marlow, Kurtz, the Accountant, and the Russian. The theoretical framework used in the delineation of the novella is that of New Historical Criticism, and the treatise will seek to depict the benefits of humanism as well as portray the psychoanalytical ascent and descent of man

It is possible that most or all boats and rig-types used in prehistoric times in the SouthEast Asia-Pacific region have completely disappeared from the record, and that those recorded by Europeans in the 17th century may have been relatively recent innovations. The purpose of this paper is to introduce to the literature a new source of information on ancient boat and rig designs. This source is the information encoded in rock-art depictions of watercraft. This paper provides a technical appraisal of 18 images of watercraft from the Tutuala region of East Timor.

Purpose.-The Union of Light Ion Centers in Europe (ULICE) program addressed the need for uniting scientific results for carbon-ion radiation therapy obtained by several institutions worldwide in different fields of excellence, and translating them into a real benefit to the community. Particularly, the concepts for dose/volume parameters developed in photon radiotherapy cannot be extrapolated to high linear energy transfer particles. Methods and Materials.-The ULICE-WP2 taskforce included radiation oncologists involved in carbon-ion radiation therapy and International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements, radiation biologists, expert physicists in the fields of carbon-ion radiation therapy, microdosimetry, biological modeling and image-guided radiotherapy. Consensual reports emerged from multiple discussions within both the restricted group and the wider ULICE community. Public deliverables were produced and disseminated to the European Commission. Results.-Here we highlight the disparity in practices between treating centers, then address the main topics to finally elaborate specific recommendations. Although it appears relatively simple to add geometrical margins around the clinical target volume to obtain the planning target volume as performed in photon radiotherapy, this procedure is not appropriate for carbon-ion radiation therapy. Due to the variation of the radiation quality in depth, there is no generic relative biological effectiveness value for carbon-ions outside of an isolated point, for a given fractionation and specific experimental conditions. Absorbed dose and "equieffective dose" for specified conditions must always be reported.
