Quantum Ontology

Despite renewed interest in the development of Heisenberg’s scientific work, and in his complex relation to the dramatic unfolding of German cultural history, there has yet to be executed a sustained and philosophically critical interpretative commentary on the book that is his crucial philosophical-ontological legacy: Physics and Philosophy.  Given the ontological puzzles that continue to attend quantum physics and its implications for humanity’s past as well as present and future conception of reality, such a critical exegesis of this text is overdue. This article tries to extricate the central nerve of Heisenberg's sinuously unfolding, dialectical exposition, and in the process to elucidate its strengths but also its deep ambiguities and perplexities—which express fundamental dilemmas that pervade contemporary ontology.

In this basically expository paper we discuss the role oflogic and mathematics in researches concerning the ontology of scientific theories, and we consider the particular case of quantum mechanics. We argue that systems of logic in general, and classical logic in particular, may contribute substantially with the ontology of any theory that has this logic in its base. In the case of quantum mechanics, however, from the point of view of philosophical discussions conceming identity and individuality, those contributions may not be welcome for a specific interpretation, and an altemative system of logic perhaps could be used instead of a classical system. In this sense, we argue that the logic and ontology of a scientific theory may be seen as mutually inftuencing each other. El teorema de Kochen-Specker es un resultado de inexistencia básico y fundamental de hace 50 años que afecta los fundamentos de la mecánica cuántica y demuestra la imposi- bilidad de asignar consistentemente valores de verdad a ciertas proposiciones cuánticas, lo que implica fuertemente la falta de una noción significativa de "realismo cuántico". De hecho, el teorema de Kochen-Specker generalmente se interpreta en términos de requerir "contextualidad" (hablando en términos generales, "realidad" dependiente del contexto) en la física cuántica. Las pruebas originales del teorema de Kochen-Specker procedieron a través de la búsqueda de contraejemplos de fuerza bruta; contraejemplos a menudo bastante complicados y sutiles (aunque matemáticamente "elementales"). Sólo más re- cientemente se han desarrollado demostraciones algo más "geométricas". Presentamos aquí otra demostración geométrica simplificada del teorema de Kochen-Specker, que es válida para cualquier número de dimensiones, que minimiza la maquinaria técnica involucrada y pone de manifiesto la gravedad de los problemas planteados.
