宮嶋資夫の『坑夫』(1916)は初めて階級性の問題に積極的に取り組んだ前プロレタリア文学史に一線を画した作品として高く評価されるが、その中ではアナーキズムや社会主義思想のみではなく、ゴーリキー文学の影響も明確に表出されている。本論では、主人公石井金次の人物像がゴーリキーの作品に描かれる「強人」としての浮浪者の特質──一方では野性と暴力、他方では焦燥と沈鬱──を継承して造形されたことを明らかにした。
