Precast Concrete Structures

Construction plays a very important role in economic growth through the multiple effects on the other sectors of the country's economy. Precast construction concept include those structures where the majority of structural components are standardized and produced in plants or yards in a location nearer or away from the construction site, and transported to the site location for its assembly. The standardized precast elements facilitate mass production, in order to build large number of buildings in short duration. In the present case study, where the project consists of 62 towers with twelve floors each. Precast construction method has been adopted as the moulds of standardized components facilitates mass production with stringent quality control. Precast construction method involves setting up of casting yard, production & stacking, transportation and erection of precast elements.

A industrialização introduziu novos materiais, processos e métodos de construir que afetaram irreversivelmente e em escala crescente a arquitetura. A prática está essencialmente associada aos conceitos de organização e de fabricação em série, elementos esses que são entendidos a partir de um estudo mais amplo das relações de produção envolvidas e da mecanização dos meios de produção. E foi em concreto armado que a nova arquitetura se expressou em sua absoluta maioria no Brasil. Do período Vargas a Kubistchek e do boom construtivo do pós-guerra, tivemos o início de uma industrialização em um país que saía de um quadro predominantemente agropastoril. É neste cenário ainda incipiente para a pré-fabricação que dois projetos de conjuntos residenciais construídos com estrutura pré-moldada são apresentados.

O primeiro projeto, de 1961, é o Conjunto Residencial da Universidade de São Paulo - CRUSP integrante da Cidade Universitária Armando Salles de Oliveira, em São Paulo. Originalmente formado por doze blocos, foram financiados pelo Fundo de Construção da Universidade de São Paulo – FUNDUSP, com a finalidade de abrigar estudantes de outras cidades que ingressaram na instituição. Projeto de autoria dos arquitetos Eduardo Kneese de Mello, Joel Ramalho Jr. e Sidney de Oliveira, teve sua construção iniciada em março de 1962. Os blocos A, B, C, D, E e F foram inaugurados em maio de 1963, sendo executados em estrutura convencional de concreto e os seis restantes em estrutura pré-moldada no próprio canteiro da obra. Constituindo um dos primeiros casos de construção de grande porte executada neste sistema no Brasil, o CRUSP teve sua importância pelo pioneirismo e pela sistematização das etapas de projeto e execução.

O segundo projeto a ser estudado é dos Edifícios de Apartamentos para Professores, conhecido também como Colina, de autoria do arquiteto João Filgueiras Lima (Lelé). Projetado para o Campus Universitário Darcy Ribeiro da UnB em Brasília no ano de 1962, foi executado em 1963. O conjunto, também construído em estrutura pré-moldada, é formado pelos blocos A, B, C e D e seguiu os mesmos princípios de racionalização empregada nos principais prédios da Universidade. Localizados no extremo norte do Campus, conforme zoneamento previsto no plano urbanístico de Lucio Costa, as residências para professores foram propostas para serem construídas em etapas, em virtude de alguns aprimoramentos de ordem técnica, construtiva e espacial incorporados ao projeto. O objetivo era garantir a desejada flexibilização dos espaços internos atendendo às mais variadas composições familiares dos futuros moradores. Partindo dessa premissa, além dos fechamentos em placas de concreto pré-moldadas, optou-se pelo uso de divisórias removíveis que se adaptassem facilmente às necessidades das famílias dos professores da universidade, tentando com isso uma maior flexibilização da planta.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo realizar um estudo comparativo entre os dois projetos, identificando elementos de coordenação modular, organização espacial e aspectos construtivos. A racionalização do projeto – que, num primeiro momento, procurava apenas reduzir custos e prazos – também se manifestou em termos da configuração espacial das unidades de habitação e das relações formais dos blocos. Neste sentido, o artigo procura traçar paralelos e convergências entre as duas propostas que, mesmo concebidas quase que concomitantemente, apresentam diferenças significativas tanto espaciais quanto construtivas. A pré-fabricação – ou, no caso específico a pré-moldagem – estava no início de sua história no Brasil e por isso ainda se apresentava em nível investigativo, tanto nas estratégias de projeto quanto na solução estrutural.

Precast concrete building structures are composed of some basic types of structural systems. These systems can be combined in different ways to obtain an appropriate and effective structural concept that fulfils the needs of specific buildings. The connections between the precast concrete elements have been labelled as one of the most significant factors to consider when successfully designing. The main objective of this study is to design of connection of precast industrial building use for storage located in the north region of Cameroon in Garoua town Garoua town is found at is in tropical zone, with snowfall and a wind speed 22m/s at 10m above ground level with negligible seismic force .the industrial building is designed and the connections are verified and the sections of the precast elements at ultimate and serviceability limits state. For this study snow load wind load and seismic load are assumed and analysed on the building, using Eurocode 1 for actions on structures, Eurocode 2 for the design of concrete structures and euro code 8 for the design of structure for earthquake resistance, different connection types are identified and design on the structure, corbel column -beam connection is designed using the strut and tie method, Column Shoes and Anchor Bolts are designed for column base connection using PEIKKO design. The connections are designed under static load analysis and also the precast elements which are slabs, beams and columns are designed. During the dynamic analysis the precast element are verified and the connections are verified to resist the seismic action. At the end of the study, the result of verifications of the structure under ultimate and serviceability limits state are respected, a dowel is added on the corbel connection to have a ductile behaviour. With the proposed prefabricated structures system and all it advantages over in-situ construction system and by adopting precast the system, Cameroon will be able attained it objective to be industrialised, which will improve the economies of the country and its industrialisation.

This report describes experimental and analytical studies of the seismic response of a three-story precast concrete building designed according to the Mexico City’s Building Code and the State of Guerrero’s Seismic Code. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the horizontal inertial forces in the floor systems and to study the effectiveness of the emulation concept in connections of precast buildings, which was carried out for the first time in Mexico. The prototype building represents a parking building located in Acapulco in hard soil.  The structural system of the building consisted of precast reinforced-concrete frames in both directions. The floor system in the prototype building is formed by precast hollow core units, which were seated on the main beams placed in the long direction of the building, with a cast-in-place concrete topping with a thickness of 80 millimeters. Building a full-scale prototype was not feasible due to constraints on space and shaking table capacity, and a 1:4 scale model was use instead, which was constructed in the shaking table facility of the Instituto de Ingenieria at the UNAM.
The input for the shaking table tests was the accelerogram recorded in the Llolleo station during the Valparaiso (1985) earthquake, and was scaled according to similitude rules. First, the specimen was tested under a low-intensity ground-motion (Llolleo at 7 %), in order to have an insight the dynamic characteristics of the building. After this test, the specimen was subjected to four high-intensity ground-motions (Llolleo 100 %, Llolleo 200 %-A, Llolleo 200 %-B, and Llolleo 250 %) aimed at studying the inelastic behavior of the floor systems, and the precast building’s connections.
Connections in precast elements using grouted corrugated ducts were used, and they showed a satisfactory behavior during the high intensity tests. The cast-in-place beam-to-beam connections were located away from the location of potential plastic hinge zones and they did not show any damage after the high intensity tests.
Measured floor forces in the shaking table tests were found to be higher than forces obtained using the current building code of Mexico. A procedure for evaluating these forces is proposed in this study, and its results are compared with measured values. The system used to emulate a cast-in-place connection showed a satisfactory behavior during the high intensity tests, which gives experimental evidence to recommend its use for RC precast buildings in seismic zones such as those in Mexico.

En este estudio se evalúa el comportamiento y diseño sísmico de sistemas de piso en edificios prefabricados de concreto reforzado. Se resumen recomendaciones de diferentes reglamentos, de prácticas de diseño, e investigaciones recientes. Se observa que el firme de concreto puede ser analizado como un panel de concreto sometido a fuerzas de membrana. De esta manera, empleando métodos apropiados para el diseño de estructuras de concreto tipo panel, como son el Método del Puntal y tirante (MPT), el Método de los Elementos Finitos (MEF) y el Método del Stringer y el Panel (MSP), se propone un procedimiento para el diseño sísmico de los sistemas de piso prefabricados. Dicho procedimiento engloba la determinación de las fuerzas inerciales de piso, transformación de estas fuerzas en acciones internas en el diafragma y suministro del refuerzo requerido. El procedimiento propuesto es aplicado para la revisión sísmica del sistema de piso de una estructura a escala, representativa de un edificio prefabricado (factor de escala 1:4), la cual será ensayada en mesa vibradora, para un registro sísmico de suelo duro. El sistema de piso de este edificio se diseña de acuerdo con la práctica mexicana, en la que el refuerzo del sistema de piso consiste solamente en el requerido por temperatura. La resistencia del sistema de piso calculada con el procedimiento propuesto, resulta ser menor que las fuerzas sísmicas actuantes, por lo que se esperaría que el sistema de piso llegue a fallar, durante los estudios en mesa vibradora.
Como resultado de este estudio se concluye que los reglamentos de diseño actuales no cuentan con un procedimiento específico, adecuado para el diseño de los sistemas de piso prefabricados. Así mismo, la obtención de las fuerzas sísmicas de piso a partir de ellos, puede estar del lado de la inseguridad, como se encontró en la revisión sísmica del edificio estudiado.
Finalmente, se intenta validar el modelo analítico para el espécimen prefabricado, para el ensaye en mesa vibradora. Mediante análisis tiempo-historia no lineal y pushover, se concluye que el edificio estará sometido a una ductilidad global de 2, con lo cual los elementos de los marcos resistentes a fuerza sísmica (vigas y columnas) tendrían un buen comportamiento, ya que se considera que el edificio tiene una capacidad de ductilidad mayor que la demanda mencionada.

El presente trabajo estudia el comportamiento sísmico de tres edificios de marcos de concreto con losas de vigueta y bovedilla. Las direcciones de las viguetas en planta se variaron hasta obtener tres disposiciones diferentes. Esto se hizo con la finalidad de evaluar su influencia en la respuesta estructural de cada edificio. De los análisis realizados, se concluye que la disposición de las viguetas en planta no tiene mayor efecto sobre la respuesta del edificio, que la de cambiar la trayectoria de las cargas de gravedad hacia los elementos de apoyo. Así mismo, se demostró que estos sistemas se comportan como diafragmas rígidos. Por último, se obtuvieron algunas recomendaciones prácticas para el diseño sísmico de los mismos.
This paper studies the seismic behavior of three moment-resisting concrete frame buildings with precast beam and block slabs. The directions of the precast beams in the floor system were modified until three different arrays were obtained. This was made in order to evaluate their influence on the structural behavior in each one of the buildings. It might be concluded, from the analysis made, that the arrays of the precast beams in the floor systems, have no further effect on the response of the building, but to modify the trajectory of the gravity loads into the supporting elements. It was demonstrated as well, that these systems behave like rigid diaphragms. Lastly, some practical recommendations were obtained for their seismic design.

Ceplan (Centro de Planejamento Arquitetônico e Urbanístico) era o órgão da Universidade de Brasília responsável pelos projetos da nova Universidade nos anos 1960. O artigo aborda as questões construtivas do Centro e os aspectos que envolvem os interiores e a criação de seu mobiliário.

El presente trabajo hace una revisión de los criterios de diseño sísmico de sistemas de piso prefabricados encontrados en varios reglamentos de diseño, y mediante el estudio del comportamiento sísmico de estas estructuras, se propone un procedimiento general de diseño frente a las acciones sísmicas. El procedimiento permite la transformación de las fuerzas sísmicas actuantes en acciones internas en el diafragma y el suministro del refuerzo requerido. De la aplicación del procedimiento propuesto a la revisión del sistema de piso de una estructura prefabricada típica en México, se concluye que las prácticas de diseño actuales no son conservadoras.
This paper shows important recommendations for the seismic design of precast flooring systems, taken from design codes. Using studies upon their behavior, a general design procedure for these systems against earthquakes is proposed. This procedure allows for the transformation of seismic forces into diaphragm internal forces and supplies the required reinforcement. This procedure was used for the review of the flooring system of a typical precast building in México. As a result, we conclude that Mexican design practice is not conservative.

Since eighties, 400 and 500 mm thick precast-prestressed concrete hollow core slabs, characterized by increasingly optimized cross-sections with non-circular voids, became very common. However, deeper slabs with long spans, which have to resist high line loads acting close to the supports, are subjected to initial web shear cracking and may fail at loads less than those predicted by traditional codes prescriptions. The shear strength capacity of these members without transverse reinforcement is evaluated through a campaign of detailed nonlinear finite element analyses, matching experimental test data collected from past programs. Constitutive models, based on nonlinear fracture mechanisms, are considered to numerically reproduce the experimental response of single span, simply supported, isolated hollow core units, highlighting web-shear failure mechanism, due to short development length and lack of transverse reinforcement. The adopted diffuse smeared fixed cracking constitutive model allows a reliable prediction of shear stress distributions and crack patterns for these members in their inelastic branch. The presence of a variable inclined strut is clearly evident. Peak shear stress is localized at the bottom side of the cross-section, rather than at the level of the centroid. The experienced brittle webshear failure mechanism is governed by hollow core shapes with circular or non-circular voids, as evidenced by the evolution of the principal tensile strain distributions. Typically, less inclined, more rounded, diagonal crack, controlled by the smooth web width variation along depth, is opposed to a fairly constant variation of the fracture angle inclination, governed by the abrupt and irregular web width drop.

Over the last few decades, the use of precast concrete components have been significantly increasing in building and bridge construction due to their quality, durability, and speed of construction. Precast components need to be fully connected to ensure the integrity, serviceability, and durability of the completed structure. Several grout-filled sleeves are currently being used to splice reinforcing bars of the adjacent precast components. These sleeves require very tight tolerances in precast production to ensure the alignment of the spliced bars, which usually results in using larger and more costly sleeves than needed. The objective of this paper is to introduce a reinforcing bar splice sleeve that accommodates current production tolerances in addition to being economical and easy to produce. The design method of the proposed splice sleeve and experimental investigation conducted using two alternatives of the proposed bar splice sleeve are presented. Eighteen specimens for splicing #8 (No. 25) and #9 (No. 29) bars were tested using different sleeve lengths. Test results indicated that the proposed bar splice sleeve have adequate capacity to fully develop reinforcing bars while being simpler to use and more economical than current splice sleeves.

A full-scale three-storey precast building was tested under seismic conditions at the European Laboratory for Structural Assessment in the framework of the SAFECAST project. The unique research opportunity of testing a complete structural system was exploited to the maximum extent by subjecting the structure to a series of pseudodynamic (PsD) tests and by using four different structural layouts of the same mock-up, while 160 sensors were used to monitor the global and local response of each layout. Dry mechanical connections were adopted to realize the joints between: floor-to-floor, floor-to-beam, wall-to-structure; column (and wall)-to-foundation and beam-to-column. Particular emphasis was given to the seismic behavior of mechanical beam-column connections, as well as to the response of floor diaphragms. Thus, the in-plane rigidity of three pretopped diaphragms with or without openings was assessed. In addition, two types of beam-to-column connections were investigated experimentally, namely hinged beam-column connections by means of dowel bar and emulative beam-column joints by means of dry innovative mechanical connections. Therefore, the seismic behavior of floor diaphragms and pinned beam-column connections in a multi-storey precast building was addressed experimentally. The results demonstrated that the proposed new beam-to-column connection system is a viable solution toward enhancing the response of precast RC frames subjected to seismic loads, in particular when the system is applied to all joints and quality measures are enforced in the execution of the joints.

Usage of precast prestressed concrete hollow core (PPHC) slabs has been extensively spread out in roofing and flooring systems around the globe due to benefits of mass production and fast site construction. In this flooring system, prestressed precast hollow core slabs are used together with or without a cast in place concrete topping. A few research works focused on studying the effect of using concrete topping on enhancement of the structural integrity of the PPHC system. This paper presents an experimental study conducted to investigate the effects of using different types of cast in place (CIP) concrete toppings on the behavior of PPHC slabs. Ten typical full scale specimens of PPHC slabs were prepared in precast concrete plant under quality control program; specimens were classified into five groups. Group (1) includes two control specimens without topping, Group (2) contains two specimens with ordinary reinforced concrete topping, Group (3) involves two specimens with ordinary reinforced concrete topping connected to the top surface of the slab using steel anchors, Group (4) comprises two specimens with fibrous concrete topping, and finally Group (5) includes two specimens with ferrocement topping. All test specimens were tested under static line loading until failure. Cracking patterns, failure modes, cracking and ultimate failure moment capacities, and moment-deflection relationship have been illustrated, discussed, and analyzed in this study. Adding concrete topping to the PPHC slabs enhances flexural behavior directly under static line loading, as the cracking moment resistance was increased by about 6% to 31% and failure moment was increased by about 11% to 41% by using concrete toppings.

Precast concrete is a growing alternative to conventional cast-in-place concrete, especially for buildings in urban areas in Mexico. Precast concrete is well known for increasing construction speed and producing high-quality products. However, a common concern with precast concrete buildings in seismic areas is seismicresistant connections. This paper discusses testing of a typical practice in Mexico for connecting precast concrete members for moment-resisting frames using welded reinforcement. Results of cyclic lateral load testing of typical beam-column assemblies and the analysis of these connections using a nonlinear analytical model are discussed in this paper.

The paper charts the early development of environmental thinking in Architecture up to the radical
paradigm shift of modernism and brutalism. The resulting emphasis on proportional grammar over
the technical performance of the interior environment would be common threads in Educational
architecture leading up to the design of the Regional Technical Colleges (RTCs) in 1967. Changes
in technology, materials and skills shortages led to the development of post war steel frame
Hertfordshire Schools which greatly influenced the future direction of Technological School and
College design. Financial rationalisation saw a movement away from the steel frame CLASP models to
concrete frame Intergrid systems, which would directly influence a key precedent of the RTC design,
the M&M building at the University of Birmingham. The intelligence of the building design by ARUP
would be compromised by the Modernist emphasis on plastic over glazed facades, which lacked
shading suffered from great heat loss. The movement away from quality materiality and exposed grid
structure, resulted in a loss of delight and a greater level of brutalism.

► SUMMARY:

♦ The Resilient Composite Systems (R.C.S.) could be counted as "The Methodically Reinforced Nonlinear Porous Materials", also having the high specific modulus of resilience in flexure. They are the compound materials, with some particular structural properties, in which, contrary to the basic geometrical assumption of the flexure theory in Solid Mechanics, the strain changes in the beam height during bending is typically "Nonlinear". The Resilient Composite Systems are made by expediently creating the disseminated suitable hollow pores and/or by distributing the appropriate lightweight aggregates throughout the methodically reinforced, fibered conjoined matrix so that; "the strain changes in the beam height during bending" is typically "nonlinear". Thereby, by applying the mentioned method to make the said composite systems, "considerably increasing the modulus of resilience and the bearing capacity in bending" together with "the significant decrease of the weight" and "the removal of the beam fracture possibility of primary compressive type" have been feasible. Through making these particular consistently functioning systems, the above-stated paradoxical virtues have been concomitantly fulfilled in "one functioning unit" altogether.

♦ The RCS (with the mentioned general structural properties and specific functional criteria) whose cement materials include the "C-S-H (Calcium Silicate hydrate) crystals" have been termed "Elastic Composite, Reinforced Lightweight Concrete (E.C.R.L.C.)".

♦ The RCS and ECRLC as a kind of RCS could be used in many cases. For instance, "Constructing Lightweightly and Consistently", also with practically utilizing the RCS and ECRLC in particular, can be counted as the pivotal and practical tactic to effectively increase the resistance & safety of the constructions against "earthquake" and lateral forces, in the large extent. For example, using some lightweight and insulating, "non-brittle", reinforced sandwich panels or 3D-panels, "with the high modulus of resilience and appropriate behavior against the bending loads and impacts", for construction could be taken into consideration according to the case... [It is worth remarking that; contrary to the ECRLC, the usual reinforced lightweight concretes, especially in the very low densities, are dramatically brittle; they do not have the appropriate behavior and resistance against the high bending loads and impacts.]

● "Resilient Composite Systems (RCS)":

♦ "Resilient Composite Systems" (RCS) are the compound materials, having some particular structural properties, in which, contrary to the basic geometrical assumption of the flexure theory in Solid Mechanics, the strain changes in the beam height during bending is typically "Nonlinear". The RCS could be counted as "The Methodically Reinforced Nonlinear Porous Materials", also having the high specific modulus of resilience in flexure. (Elastic Composite, Reinforced Lightweight Concrete; ECRLC is a type of RCS with the mentioned specifics.)

♦ Generally, the Resilient Composite Systems comprise these components as the main, necessary elements:
• 1) Mesh (Lattice);
• 2) Fibers or strands;
• 3) Conjoined matrix, having the disseminated suitable pores and/or the disseminated appropriate lightweight aggregates beads or particles. [Here, the general term of "lightweight aggregate" has a broad meaning, also including the polymeric and non-polymeric beads or particles.]

♦ The Resilient Composite Systems are made by creating the disseminated suitable hollow pores and/or by distributing the appropriate lightweight aggregates throughout the reinforced, fibered conjoined matrix so that; "the strain changes in the beam height during bending" is typically "nonlinear". Thereby, by applying the mentioned method to make the said particular composite systems, "considerably increasing the modulus of resilience and the bearing capacity in bending" together with "the significant decrease of the weight" and "the removal of the beam fracture possibility of primary compressive type" have been feasible. Through making these particular consistently (unitedly, integratedly) functioning systems, the stated paradoxical virtues have been concomitantly fulfilled in one functioning unit altogether.

♦ Generally, in these consistently functioning units, the amount and the use manner of the mentioned components in the organized system are so that; the reciprocal interactions among the components finally lead to the "typically nonlinear strain changes in the beam height during bending" (as the "basic functional character" of these systems with the specific testable criteria and indices) and the functional specifications fulfillment of the system.

♦ In the RCS in general, the main strategy to raise the modulus of resilience in bending is "increasing the strain capability of the system in bending" within the elastic limit.

♦ Here, the main tactic to realize the stated strategy is: "creating the suitable hollow pores and/or using the appropriate lightweight aggregates, all disseminated throughout the methodically reinforced conjoined matrix", to provide the possibility for occurring of the expedient internal deformities in the matrix during the bending course, which could lead to the more appropriate distribution of the stresses and the strains throughout the system and the more strain capability of the beam in flexure. On the other hand, only creating the hollow pores and/or using the lightweight aggregates in the matrix, by itself, not only cannot lead to the mentioned goals but also brings about weakening of the matrix and its fragility. Hence, concomitantly, the matrix should be well supported and strengthened. Here, this essentially ameliorating and strengthening the matrix are performed by giving attention to "the internal consistency of the matrix" and also via "employing the expedient reinforcements in two complementary levels": 1) Using the fibers to the better distribution of the tensile stresses and strains in the matrix, and to increase the matrix endurance and the modulus of resilience in tension and bending; 2) Using the mesh or lattice to better distribution of the tensile stresses and strains in the system, and to increase the system endurance and the modulus of resilience in tension and bending.

♦ In these systems, the presence of the mentioned hollow pores and/or lightweight aggregates disseminated throughout the conjoined matrix (which has been ameliorated through making "an integrated, reticular structure") provides the possibility for occurring of the expedient internal deformities in the matrix during the bending course. By the way, this can lead to the less accumulation of the internal stresses in the certain points of the matrix during bending, the better absorption and control of the stresses, and providing the more strain capability of the beam, especially within the elastic limit.

♦ The occurrence of the remarked internal deformities in the said methodically reinforced matrix during the bending course also means; the occurrence of the deformities in the said hollow pores and/or lightweight aggregates well disseminated throughout the conjoined matrix, in two different forms. Indeed, we have the internal deformities in the fibered lightweight matrix of the system throughout the bending course, in two main different forms, leading to: A) The comparative increase of the thickness (height) of the in-compressing layers (particularly in the upper parts of the beam) and the conversion of some internal compressive stresses to the internal tensile stresses (on the axis perpendicular to the mentioned internal compressive tensions) in the in-compressing layers; B) The comparative decrease of the thickness (height) of the in-tension layers (particularly in the lower parts of the beam) and the conversion of some internal tensile stresses to the internal compressive stresses (on the axis perpendicular to the mentioned internal tensile tensions) in the in-tension layers.

♦ In the under-bending sections of the "Resilient Composite Systems", the deformities occurring in the "conjoined layers perpendicular to the applied load direction" during the bending course are so that; "the initially plane sections perpendicular to the beam axis" typically shift from "the plane status" to "the curve status" during the bending course. Thereby, the basic geometrical assumption of the flexure theory in Solid Mechanics ("linearly" being of the strain changes in the beam height during bending) and the respective trigonometric equations & equalities are mainly overshadowed in these systems.

♦ This way, through occurring of the remarked internal deformities in the strengthened matrix during the flexure course, the stresses are more distributed and absorbed, and the rise rate of the internal stresses in the matrix ... reduces.  ...

The results of a numerical and experimental research on the seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) precast frames and column-foundation connections are presented in this paper. A traditional Italian multi-storey structure, characterized by a total height of 10.8m and span lengths of 5.5m, 7.2m and 14.4m, was designed in accordance with the recent seismic Code provisions for medium-high seismicity zones (OPCM 3431, 2005), then, one of the main two-bay three-storey frame was assembled in the laboratory in 3:4 scale and subjected to a quasi-static cyclic displacement history. A lateral load distribution calculated as a function of the mass and of the storey height was kept constant during the test. The traditional beam-column connections can resist only shear actions; their design is based on the strength capacity without particular considerations about the local ductility. Since it was expected that the behaviour of the connections strongly affects the in-plane global response, the main objective of the test was to quantify the initial stiffness, the maximum ductility and the energy dissipation of the frame. In addition, two precast column-foundation connections in real scale were designed through a model based on local strut-and-tie mechanisms, then assembled in the laboratory and subjected to quasi-static loading – unloading cycles at increasing displacement at the top of the columns. The aim of these tests was to evaluate the reliability of the adopted design method and to compare the experimental results with the potential performances of alternative seismic solutions.

La presente ponencia recoge los trabajos desarrollados tanto en el proyecto modificado de estructuras como durante la asistencia técnica a la Dirección Facultativa para la construcción del nuevo campo municipal de fútbol de Pasarón en Pontevedra, obra de ACXT Arquitectos. En la ponencia se detallan las particularidades de la estructura proyectada, con especial atención al esquema estructural general adoptado así como al proceso constructivo, dados los condicionantes de uso de la instalación deportiva durante la construcción de la misma. This paper describes and discusses testing of a typical practice in Mexico for connecting precast concrete members for moment resisting frames using welded reinforcement. Results of cyclic lateral load testing of typical beam-column assemblies and the analysis of these connections using a nonlinear analytical model are discussed in this paper.

This paper presents the experimental response and resistance of sixteen axial tensile tests on headed deformed bars embedded in reinforced concrete members, used as cast-in anchors, under concrete cone failure. Nine of these tests investigated the influence of the flexural reinforcement ratio, which affects the concrete cracking state in the vicinity of the anchor. The other seven tests measured the shear reinforcement contribution, adjusted to work as supplementary reinforcement, distributed in the tests in different amounts and arrangements. Furthermore, design and theoretical methods were used to discuss the authors' experimental results compared to other literature results. The flexural reinforcement ratio significantly influenced the concrete cone resistance, as it controls the crack width. Well-detailed stirrups, placed following the design codes' spacing limitations for supplementary reinforcement, can substantially increase the concrete cone resistance. The assumptions underlying the design methods are conservative, which is justified by the simplicity of their equations, but more accurate calculation methods are required.

Despite the moderate ground motions observed during the seismic events in Northern Italy, May 2012, reinforced concrete (RC) precast industrial buildings suffered excessive damage, which led to substantial direct and indirect losses. The aim of this paper is to present a seismic fragility model for Italian RC precast buildings, to be used in earthquake loss estimation and seismic risk assessment. An analytical methodology has been used that consists of (1) random sampling of one hundred structures for each building typology, (2) pushover analysis to establish a number of damage limit states, (3) execution of nonlinear dynamic analysis and comparison of the maximum demand with the limit state capacity to allocate the structure in a damage state, and (4) regression analysis on the cumulative percentage of buildings in each damage state for a set of intensity measure levels to derive the statistical parameters of the fragility functions. The building population employed in the analysis was generated considering both material and geometric variability that was obtained from the field surveys of 650 industrial facilities, as well as other information available in the literature. Several aspects of the fragility derivation process were further analysed, such as the correlation between different intensity measure types and damage, the consideration of different collapse mechanisms (e.g. beam-column connection failure) and the differences in the resulting fragility curves when adopting a 2D or a 3D modelling environment. A good agreement with preliminary empirical fragility functions based on field data was also observed.

A novel demountable shear connector for precast steel-concrete composite bridges is presented. The connector uses high-strength steel bolts, which are fastened to the top flange of the steel beam with the aid of a special locking nut configuration that prevents slip of bolts within their holes. Moreover, the connector promotes accelerated construction and overcomes typical construction tolerances issues of precast structures. Most importantly, the connector allows bridge disassembly, and therefore, can address different bridge deterioration scenarios with minimum disturbance to traffic flow, i.e. (i) precast deck panels can be rapidly uplifted and replaced; (ii) connectors can be rapidly removed and replaced; and (iii) steel beams can be replaced, while precast decks and shear connectors can be reused. A series of push-out tests are conducted to assess the behavior of the connector and quantify the effect of important parameters. The experimental results show shear resistance, stiffness, and slip capacity significantly higher than those of welded shear studs along with superior stiffness and strength against slab uplift. Identical tests reveal negligible scatter in the shear load-slip displacement behavior. A design equation is proposed to predict the shear resistance with absolute error less than 8%.

Usage of precast prestressed concrete hollow core (PPHC) slabs has been extensively spread out in roofing and flooring systems around the globe due to benefits of mass production and fast site construction. In this flooring system, prestressed precast hollow core slabs are used together with or without a cast in place concrete topping. A few research works focused on studying the effect of using concrete topping on enhancement of the structural integrity of the PPHC system. This paper presents an experimental study conducted to investigate the effects of using different types of cast in place (CIP) concrete toppings on the behavior of PPHC slabs. Ten typical full scale specimens of PPHC slabs were prepared in precast concrete plant under quality control program; specimens were classified into five groups. Group (1) includes two control specimens without topping, Group (2) contains two specimens with ordinary reinforced concrete topping, Group (3) involves two specimens with ordinary reinforced concrete topping connected to the top surface of the slab using steel anchors, Group (4) comprises two specimens with fibrous concrete topping, and finally Group (5) includes two specimens with ferrocement topping. All test specimens were tested under static line loading until failure. Cracking patterns, failure modes, cracking and ultimate failure moment capacities, and moment-deflection relationship have been illustrated, discussed, and analyzed in this study. Adding concrete topping to the PPHC slabs enhances flexural behavior directly under static line loading, as the cracking moment resistance was increased by about 6% to 31% and failure moment was increased by about 11% to 41% by using concrete toppings.

The precast concrete segmental bridges (PCSBs) are the most preferred bridge in modern bridge construction. The structural behavior of precast concrete segmental bridge is based on the behavior of joints. The joints are formed by interlocking of shear keys in precast concrete segments. The dry joint is a highly recommended joint in PCSBs for more safety and accelerated construction. The aim of this study is to understand the effect of shape of shear key on shear behavior of dry joints of PCSBs. Single keyed dry joint with six key shapes are considered for the study. The joint performance in shear is evaluated by considering the ultimate load of joint and also by the shear stress at the time of ultimate load. Analytical study is performed using ANSYS Workbench. The performance of single keyed dry joint specimens is studied under displacement controlled vertical loading and constant horizontal confining pressure.

Over the last few decades, the use of precast concrete components have been significantly increasing in building and bridge construction due to their quality, durability, and speed of construction. Precast components need to be fully connected to ensure the integrity, serviceability, and durability of the completed structure. Several grout-filled sleeves are currently being used to splice reinforcing bars of the adjacent precast components. These sleeves require very tight tolerances in precast production to ensure the alignment of the spliced bars, which usually results in using larger and more costly sleeves than needed. The objective of this paper is to introduce a reinforcing bar splice sleeve that accommodates current production tolerances in addition to being economical and easy to produce. The design method of the proposed splice sleeve and experimental investigation conducted using two alternatives of the proposed bar splice sleeve are presented. Eighteen specimens for splicing #8 (No. 25) and #9 (No. 29) bars were tested using different sleeve lengths. Test results indicated that the proposed bar splice sleeve have adequate capacity to fully develop reinforcing bars while being simpler to use and more economical than current splice sleeves.

This paper aims to evaluate numerically to what extent some connection joints currently used respects the definition of hinged connection. Within the design of connections, as design engineers, we must consider two main aspects:-Hinged connection, as per definition, is a connection allowing rotation between two components, while all displacement of any of these two components one from another is not allowed;-Importance of the type of connection used ought to get as close as possible to its theoretical hypothesis as only in this way the designed structures will be able to generate effects according to predictable and controllable expectations. According to experience gained, three types of joint connection were selected for a numerical evaluation: the results lead to the conclusion that it is necessary to make efforts in order to adopt clear norms regarding the design and calculus of the hinged connections between precast elements. There is a strong argument as for the necessity of adopting norms in this field-the design workshops do not have nor research funds or the know-how, while the state does. In the absence of norms, hinged connection will be further made on the acceptance principle of a certain solution by the local/regional designers' community.
