Depictions of sexual acts in Pompeian wall painting are usually strictly separated from other pictorial subjects and by and large are considered to be indicators of prostitution being practised in the rooms the scenes were found. The erotic pictures from Pompeian houses, however, are closely related to scenes of carousing with undressed couples and to depictions of mythical lovers. This affinity lies in the common interest in the multiple varieties of erotic interplay between man and woman. In the erotic pictures, sexual intercourse – here comprising a very limited set of basic positions – is presented as the most intensive form of physical interaction between the sexes, the ultimate point on a wide spectrum of possibilities of heterosexual encounter. In the wall paintings, this conception is demonstrated by anonymous, youthful, symmetrically coupled partners – with social differences, including those between the sexes, being ignored. On the walls of cubicula, scenes like these, and others showing passionate couples, served to evoke an erotic mood, but do not indicate mono-functional use of the respective room.

Memory is an ethereal idea. It is a postmodern concept and it allows exploring beyond what the archaeological data could reflect without any process of rethinking of that. It is a difficult concept to deal with, to imagine or to define. Memory is composed by memories, which are subjective and selective, and they are cultural constructions with a strong political ideology.
Memory is an element of historical construction and this is materialised in monuments, texts and commemorations. Memory is a construction of the past and it links the past with the agent in the present. At the end, memory could be considered as a way of identity, but identity is not always memory.
In this theoretical framework, it is very remarkable to analyse how memory could have an expression in the city of Pompeii. It is also interesting to explore the so-called ‘mnemonic devices’. In public spaces, memory is probably best expressed in religious spaces.
Throughout the time, these spaces were transformed and adapted to the new sociopolitical environment. It shows different aspects to preserve and it constitutes the memory of the city, so it cannot be considered only
as religion. Some spots can talk about the specific history, such as the sacred space assigned to the temple of Apollo, that was fossilized in its shape, keeping the former inscriptions in Oscan language, despite all the changes in urbanism. Another good example of this is the temple of the triangular forum. This temple was also one of the first sacred area that maintained their space and adapted its configuration to the new changes
of urban network, in spite of its decadence.
In the familiar sphere, we can find many proofs of the importance that familiar memories had and of how it can be searched in the archaeological finds. In this line, we can see many objects that can be understood as familiar memories. For example, some families keep burying their deceased in the same cemeteries and parts of the city
regardless of the epigraphic changes which reveal cultural changes from Oscan to Latin language. We can also observe some scenes, spaces and peak moments of the city of Pompeii which were important enough to
be painted on the walls of many domus, in order to remember special moments or emotions and to keep the familiar memory alive.
Pompeii is a unique place to explore these specific social processes such as memory places in the urban topography. Due to its good preservation state and the scarce alteration of the archaeological remains, we have in Pompeii more clues than in other archaeological sites. Even though this short paper is only a sketch, I aim to show the possibilities that Pompeii could have in this field.

Die Reisen der Habsburger im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert aus dem Blickwinkel der Archäologie Einleitung Reiseberichte aus dem späten 18. und der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts stellen in der Archäologie eine wichtige Quellengattung dar, wenn es gilt, die Entwicklung der antiquarisch geprägten Altertumswissenschaft in eine systematische Kunst-und Grabungsarchäologie nachzuvollziehen, die frühe Erschließung von antiken Fundstätten durch die Forschung und den Tourismus darzustellen oder die ursprüngliche Aufstellung von Museums-und Privatsammlungen zu rekonstruieren. Auch die Mitglieder des habsburgischen Kaiserhauses kamen auf ihren Reisen in vielfältigen Kontakt mit der noch jungen Disziplin der Archäologie, wenn sie Kunstsammlungen und Museen besuchten, Gräber, Tempel und verfallene Ruinen erkundeten oder als Zuschauer an Ausgrabungen teilnahmen. 1 Ihre dabei gemachten Beobachtungen und Erfahrungen hielten sie in Reisetagebüchern fest, wobei hier vor allem den Aufzeichnungen von Erzherzog Johann (1782-1859) zu seiner Englandreise von 1815/16 und der russisch-türkischen Reise (auch Krimreise) von 1837 sowie dem detaillierten Bericht von Kaiser Franz I. (1768-1835) zur Italienreise von 1819 ein besonderer Quellenwert für die archäologische Forschung zukommt. Dieser wird noch durch Bleistiftzeichnungen und Aquarelle der jeweils mitgereisten Künstler erhöht, die heute als eine wichtige Bestandsdokumentation für archäologische Fundstätten, wie die Athener Akropolis oder die Vesuvstadt Pompeji, gelten dürfen. In ihrer Kombination lassen die hier vorgestellten Text-und Bildquellen nicht nur einen außergewöhnlichen Blick auf die Anfänge der Archäologie als Wissenschaft zu, sondern erlauben es auch, das persönliche Interesse von Franz und Johann an der Erforschung von antiken Monumenten und Altertümern auszuloten.

Der berühmte Roman des englischen Autors Edward Bulwer-Lytton über die letzten Tage der Stadt ist sicher der bekannteste Fall, doch reicht die Faszination des Thema bis zu den literarisch deutlich anspruchsloseren Bestsellern wie Robert Harris' Pompeji-Thriller, der vielleicht noch manchem Leser in Erinnerung sein wird. Der Verfasser der vorliegenden Studie, 1 der Archäologie-Professor Eric Moorman, hat es sich nun zur Aufgabe gemacht, in einem außerordentlich materialreichen Buch das gesamte Spektrum der literarischen, künstlerischen und dramatischen Rezeption der antiken Stadt aufzufächern. Ausgehend von der archäologischen Erschließungsgeschichte Pompejis und Herculaneums beginnend im 18. Jahrhundert, bei der auch die kritischen Erörterungen Johann Joachim Winckelmanns eine wichtige Rolle spielten, 2 stellt der Verfasser in Form eines Kompendiums so viele künstlerische Rezeptionen der durch den Ausbruch des Vesuvs begrabenen Städte dar, daß man als interessierter Leser den Band über die Jahre immer wieder zur Hand nehmen wird.
